technology Any Bronies who like/work on cars?

I hadn't thought about it recently but I was just wondering what the automotive scene was in the Brony community. I myself am a weekend grease monkey and love to work on cars. I have a 94 Mazda RX7 that I imported from Japan that I'm putting an engine in at the moment.

well, i have a volvo S40 at this moment where i tend to work on sometimes. i can't really modify it too much tough cause it's still my dad's. i did fit a turbo, new exhaust and power filter in it tough.

i also have a aprilia RS 50 that i built myself from the ground up. but that isn't a car :P

I like taking things apart, figuring how they work in relation to the rest of the car and then putting them back on. I like your OC btw.

haha thanks! well, you said you where fitting a new engine in your RX-7 right? is it the model with the piston engine or the one with a wankel engine? :)

I make pony designs on my need for speed games. But in terms of reality, I don't really work on cars. I would like to. Once I get my car, I might put some pony stickers or decals on it, and maybe tune it up a bit.

The good ol wankel. I'm attaching some pictures of what my car looked like before I tore it apart, lol. The new engine is being built and should be shipped within the next week. I've been redoing the interior, you know cleaning and rewiring.

wow, that looks actually very badass :P love all the gauges you've got on it.  anyway, what kind of engine is coming your way? :P just a stock engine being rebuild or did you get it upgraded? (my volvo looks like a little family cruiser in comparison to your machine)

I'm going with a stock two rotor engine with stock twin turbos. I have some aftermarket upgrades that came off my old engine that I'll probably re-install. I didn't want to put the ones on the dash but they are necessary, I don't want my air/fuel ratio to run too lean or my engine may explode and I don't want my turbos overboosting, and well, also exploding.

I'm not an enthusiast, but I do a bit of work on my own car (BMW 540i6). Someday I hope to restore an old BMW 2002.

Mostly learned out of necessity over the years. It certainly is cheaper to do it yourself whenever possible.

This is true, you get to take the labor costs off your bill and learn at the same time. I'm a fan of the mid 90's bimmers myself. I would love a 325i to tinker on.

Yea, I've been helping my dad on our 1973 Super Beetle Rat rod....we've got all the parts, but we need a welder, and time. It's sitting in the backof our 2 1/2 car garage.....our garage is full, with 2 VW beetles in the back, a car and a truck inside it, along with 3 motorcycles and my 2 bikes. and storage lockers, along with 2 tool chests and a work bench.

I've also worked on this all m own....paid $80 for it originally, and got it running.  It's a 1970 Motobecane Mobylette 50v

I've done engine work, carb work, brakes(still a WIP)....now i'm trying to sell it. I took some parts off another moped I have of the same make and model.

I took an entry level motor mechanic college course, and as such I know how to do many things. Or at least figure out what the problem is.

Cars.. not so much, but i did love my ol' 89' Camero while i was able to have it (had to give it up when i got out of the military and the tran died literally days before i had to move from one side of the country to the other...)

I swear, i ever get the chance i'm getting another one, or even one of these new beefy looking ones.

My brother recently sold his '78 one.... SoB... wish i could've afforded it :(

but i do enjoy... well.. did while it lasted, working on EA-6B aircraft :)

this was my BABY when it was in active service... got decommissioned 2 days after i left :(

49.9cc actually is stamped on the cylinder head.So it's classified as a motor vehicle under 50cc but yea 2 stroke.  1:25 ratio.  spark plug is a bitch to get at though.my sockets rub against the gas tank, lol. So I have to remove the spring behind the engine that provides belt tension. It's interesting. It's got a variator clutch, so higher RPM the motor pivots on its mounts and pulls the belt tighter, and a dynamic pulley with springs in it narrows up and forces the V belt into a wider diameter, and therefore gives more speed to the rear end and off you go.

I like cars, I don't work a lot on cars but I have done a little work on cars. Nothing major though, mostly just maintenance. My dad has a lot of mechanical knowledge, so does my grandpa. The car I'm currently driving is a Mitsubishi Carisma 1.6 L sport was actually restored. It looks like new.. Well sort of. I love giving it a wax, just recently I repainted the wheels and stuff. A lot of work has been put in it, a lot of mechanical work but the body didn't really need restoring. It's a very good car, it seems to be able to run forever. So yeah, I try learning from my father.

I like cars a lot, I plan on collecting a lot of them in the future. Like the BMW M6 2006, been in love with that car for a long time. A lot of other car too. I love cars a lot, it is my opinion that without cars there would be no point in living. But that's maybe just because I'm a car enthusiaist, I'm obsessed with cars.

You got a RX-7... I envy you dude. I have thought about getting a RX-8 but the rotary engine prevents me. Since I read somewhere that the engines didn't last very long. I need a car that will last for a long time since you know college and stuff. Or maybe it wasn't that they didn't last long, but there was something about them.. Don't remember what.

Mazda_RX8.jpg

I'd much rather go for a RX-7 though, they are a lot cooler.

So yeah a car enthusiaist here, cars forever!

yeah most common scooters use the vario system. i'm not so fond of it tough. i also think the bike was originally supposed to be european? since it's stamped as 49.9 cc. correct me if i'm wrong tough :3

This one is actually the Canadian model. There were a bunch made exclusively for Canada. Not sure why. but I found that out after trouble shooting problems in the Magneto. seems the Canadian version has a completely different wiring setup as well, from the EU version.

that's strange.... i can't think of a logical reason to do such a thing. :/ anyway, it does kind of explain the 49.9 stamp i think.

i think (since mobylette is european) that they didn't use diffrent stamps for the cylinder heads.

in europe a moped is only considered a moped if it's cylinder stays under 50cc. so that would explain the 49.9 stamp :)

When I was in high school I had a 94 Trans Am. I had that thing in my automotive class almost every day doing stuff to it. I loved it, but those LT1 motors were just a pain in the ass. They had a reverse flow cooling system. It squeezed out more power, but made the damn thing too complicated. The distributor was driven by the water pump, so the stuck it in between the water pump and the engine block... Yeah, it was stupid and required me to take the front of the engine apart to get it out. It finally became too much of a money pit and I hawked it. Now I have a new Challenger to play with. Any repairs are now under warranty so now I can concentrate on aftermarket stuff.

hahaha so glad i found this thread! I'm an HVAC Designer but I've always had a passion for cars. If I had the chance, i'd go back to my voc high school and choose automotive technology instead of HVAC/R.

I do mostly car maintenance oil change, xmission oil, fluids, brakes ect. I have also done a engine job. I replaced the rings in my car a few months back. What a nightmare! So many parts, bolts, nuts lol These Toyota heads are a bit complex to work on since they have a special kind of valve seat.

Wow that car looks amazing dude, it's hard finding cars in this good condition in my country. :/ I have always wanted a Toyota Celica, I remembered seeing the rally types when I was younger, the 94 celica gt. I saw one today not a gt version though, it wasn't in good shape.. But still awesome looking cars.

I like the Toyota Celica 94' gt. Toyota used to make cool looking cars, sure the gt86 is cool.. But nothing like the Supra.

I plan on working on a car this summer, although I'm not sure if I'll spend too much work on it. Since I have to keep a balance in my financials because of school, so it might not happen. Otherwise I would just spend it all on cars..  ;)

Anyway, that's probably one of the coolest looking Celica I have ever seen, very clean and neat.. Good job.

Thanks man   I've worked real hard on her within the past 2 years i've owned her. I do plan on buying another car by the end of the summer if all goes well. I'm trying to get my hands on a 2000-2001 Celica GTS with the higher reving motor and 6 speed transmission.

Either that or ill get a 2nd gen MR2 if i can find one :(

I've always loved the All Trac celica back in the rally days. The ST165, ST185, and the ST205. Lovely cars and great on dirt. Its a big shame that TOYOTA cheated in the WRC using turbo bypasses.

I was on the same boat as you bro. Just did everything one at a time. Know what you want done to the car, write it down, save up and mod away.

Anything with an engine I love. I've always had an interested in seeing how stuff works and I deem myself mechanically inclined to some degree. I work with my friends on all sorts of projects. Currently two close friends and I are working on not one, but two mini-moto bikes, A Baja Doodle Bug that we plan to swap a 6 horsepower engine in (Boring little 2 HP motor as stock), and a Speed 440G that we're rebuilding from the frame up.
