Do ponies wear horseshoes?

so this is an omission that I personally attribute to the show's quirky art style.

This. Let's not argue about this, it's not that important.

I'd like to thank the MLP Vector Club for the images used in my avatar.

In episode 12 of the first season

6:52 Applejack stomps and there's a metalic sound

There are horseshoe prints in Fall Weather Friends, in the sand when Applejack and Rainbow Dash are having a long jump contest, Stare Master when the CMC escape from Fluttershy's house into the Everfree forest, and Hearts and Hooves in CMC's card to Cheerilee (There's possibly alot more)

I think it's just a figure of speech. I mean, you see the bottom of their hooves all the time and there's nothing there. Either it's a primitive thing like Pencils said or it's (more likely imo) just a horse reference the writers threw in there, just like with all the images of horseshoes you see around.

I'd kinda assume that they mean shoes for horses, and not literal horseshoes. More like the shoes on the gala outfits. And they're worn as a formal thing, with regular horseshoes only existing for playing the game (Horseshoes) and for decoration.

Especially makes sense when you think about the context of your conclusive proof, since regular horseshoes would be beneficial for climbing a mountain, where fashionable shoes would not. :P

humans use plenty of figures of speech which aren't to be taken literally...why can't ponies?

It's probably the same sort of consideration to one of our favorite tigers.

Hobbes has paws, and also make pawprints, but the pads of his paws on his forelegs appear in very few strips. Bill Watterson forewent drawing the pads because he thought they distracted from their expressiveness. This is probably the same logic for hooves in My Little Pony.

I'm afraid this is about as conclusive as a blurry photograph. As others have pointed out, it could just as easily be a figure of speech.

What about when you put it together with the fact that: There are infact horseshoes in equestria, colored horseshoes that can match each pony's coat color in order to blend in and go unnoticed, and we've seen horseshoe prints in some ocations.

I believe there's plenty of proof that they do infact wear them. Of course we dont see them, but thats just their desing, or else you could just say that the ponies are hoof less, cause you can't see those either

Why is everyone always looking for deeper meanings. Do you know how difficult it would be for the animators to keep adding horse shoes to the characters? It's the same with the pony's coats. They appear as a solid color, but nobody is saying that it's really their skin! It would be too difficult to texture the coats in every shot. Horse shoes have been mentioned several times, and seen in multiple episodes as tracks left on the ground. This is a non-issue.

Evidence for:

+"...making sure our horseshoes match our hairbows..."

- could be just an expression

+"...shaking in her little horseshoes..."

- could also be an expression, we say "shaking in her boots" when someone's not actually wearing boots. But this counter-argument isn't as convincing...

+countless appearences in show of horseshoes

+horse shoe print marks, multiple occasions

Evidence against:

+We don't see them

-I find it highly unlikely the animators would draw this level of detail.

-Could be same color as coat.

+(my own) Consider the process of "putting on" horse shoes...

-Despite the fact you're nailing it in, which I do cringe at, they supposedly don't feel it, and it's still better for a pony in the long run, and it can't be worse than getting a piercing... (like removing wisdom teeth, wearing braces, etc.)

Seems to me like they wear horse shoes...

It would be interesting funny to see an episode where a filly gets "shoed". Personally, if I were a filly/pony getting shoed, I'd be terrified. Just see how kids react to getting the flu shot. But this would be even worse!

Parent/Doctor/Farrier "It doesn't hurt at all! Just a little push is all you feel!"

Filly: *Sees big nails*

"AAAAAGGHH!!!"

*runs off*

*huge chase ensues*

Ah, yes, I remember the crazy chases through the house as I tried to avoid the flu shot when I was little...

Oh, very well. I was on the fence about the issue anyway...my primary objection was that I felt horseshoes could be used as a weapon, a rather deadly one at that, when on the hooves of a pony like Applejack, but I suppose that's a silly objection at best.

The shape of their hoofprints wouldn't really prove anything, considering how horseshoes are the same shape as hooves.

It's hard to tell whether most ponies are wearing horseshoes or not, as we can't really see their hooves at all, just their uniformly coloured, marshmallow-like legs and feet. However I would like to present two pieces of evidence that strongly suggest that ponies do not wear horseshoes.

Point the first: There are a few ponies with exposed hooves like Big Mcintosh, and they do not appear to be wearing horseshoes, despite the fact that Big Mac is probably the pony that would need horseshoes the most, considering how he has to carry heavy loads and works in places with wet soil..

Point the second: In "A Dog and Pony Show" Rarity claims she refuses to dig quickly because she wants to preserve her "Pony pedi", which is presumably the Pony equivalent of a pedicure. If she were wearing metal horseshoes she would not have to worry about the state of her hoof.

I don't think there's really definitive proof either way, but the balance of evidence seems to weigh in favour of the idea that they do not wear horseshoes, at least not normally. I've certainly never seen a Pony say or do something that inherently suggests that they are currently wearing horseshoes, and I find it far more likely that they just take good care of their hooves rather than nailing crescent-shaped pieces of metal to them on a regular basis

I grabbed this from the Wikipedia article on shoeing a horse...

Shoeing, when performed correctly, causes no pain to the animal. Farriers trim the insensitive part of the hoof, which is the same area into which they drive the nails. This is analogous to a manicure on a human fingernail, only on a much larger scale.

This is obviously what Rarity was talking about!

Okay everypony. Here is absolute undeniable proof! Princess Celestia herself uses glue-on boot style horse shoes! Of course hers are much more ornate then those an average pony would use!

Oh - just re-watched episode 12 (name slips my mind, this is where the Cutie Mark Crusaders first appear), Applebloom is working with Applejack at the market, and a few times Applejack stomps her hoof, and you hear metal!

We've seen glue, but I'm assuming they don't have the really powerful stuff needed for holding horseshoes on really well for years...

Okay, it's not painful, but neither is getting a shot, really. It's just the needle and thought scares the heck outta kids, and still makes me really, really nervous (though now "I take it like a man" instead of running everywhere for dear life XD ).

Yeah, you feel something with a shot, and hoofing may be totally painless, but they must feel something when the nails are inserted, just a push on their foot, like when you step on a small, sharp rock while wearing shoes, it doesn't hurt, but you can feel the force of the rock through your sole; it's the same thing: the energy that pushes the nail in will transfer through the "toenail" and they'll feel a push.

Not pain, by any means, but enough to make young fillies freak out, just like how little kids cause such a huge fuss over something that they can hardly even feel XD

Why make that assumption? I see no reason why they wouldn't have any powerful bonding compounds to use. Besides, they have magic to assist their chemists. Besides again, why would it have to last years? Weeks or days would be enough. Everypony likes to change her shoes once in a while!
