I imagine waffles to be much more structurally sound as well, considering that they tend to have a tougher shell than than the average, flabby pancake.  I suppose if you were to highly condense a pancake, it might be more effective, seeing as a waffle is more likely to just crumble, though in the condensed state, could you still call it a pancake?

And furthermore, it can be argued that, due to the tougher shell, a waffle has much more design potential than the average pancake. In a pancake, you are generally limited to altering only the shape. A waffle, however, allows you to alter both the shape AND the interior designs. It is far more complicated than altering the shape of a pancake since, for a waffle, you are forced to redesign the mold itself, but it allows for a much more diversity.
