That's nice.

While i admire the goal of this website i would like to warn against copy-pasting shell commands from websites directly into a terminal, what you are copying from a text/code box is not always the same as what actually gets pasted: http://thejh.net/misc/website-terminal-copy-paste, you should instead copy the commands into a text editor first to make sure nothing nasty is hidden. You may think nothing gets executed until you press enter but i have had plenty of instances in the past when i was guilty of doing this where commands were executed immediately after pasting them into the terminal.

Aren't those only commands with more than one line? Or am I reading not right?

I love Linux. If it weren't for the fact that I already have a ton of stuff on my Windows 7 OS, I'd probably be using Ubuntu or Mint. In fact, I'm almost a certified Linux administrator. Once I pass the LX0-102, I'll be officially certified.

Can't wait for that =D

You realize the CompTIA linux sysadmin exam is not used at all in the enterprise linux community? You need to have RHCSA

Also... no one should ever use Ubuntu and you won't have to worry about stupid disabling the programs that steal your data.

Good for you. Do what you want...

so anyone try steamOS yet? I haven't since I'm not able to download it right now (slow internet connection)

also... according to the FAQ... it's based on Debian... HECK YES!

I was actually thinking about getting it, but I might wait a bit to see what people have to say about it. And yeah, it's based on Debian 7.1.

Anyways, I might just do normal, non-SteamOS linux-ing under Wayland; I really don't like all the trouble Xorg gives me. And it seems like Wayland's gonna get a lot of ground by next year, so that's pretty good.

Looks like the SteamOS beta is UEFI only as of right now, my old BIOS system is now sad, and according to the FAQ: dual booting apparently is not supported as the installer will erase the entire disk, since its based on Debian Wheezy 7.1, dual booting shouldn’t be tricky to implement so hopefully they allow it soon.

It also apparently doesn't support AMD either... my z77 "HTPC" cried as well... though I'm sure there are ways around it :P

but I think I'll need to wait a day or 2 to download it... slow internet speeds and all.

that and I'm having fun installing Arch on the "HTPC" atm .-.

Awesome! At this rate it might be downloaded by tomorrow morning ^_^

Well to change the subject a little, I've been debating if I should continue using Debian on my next laptop or if I should start Arching a bit more, if ya know what I mean. ;)

Looks like some users in the Steam community have gotten it to boot without UEFI

You just need to install grub with a i386 target to the USB device

sudo grub-install --debug --target=i386-pc --force --root-directory=PATH_TO_YOUR_USB_DRIVE /dev/sdX

replace PATH_TO_YOUR_USB_DRIVE with the full path where the root of the USB Drive is located ex: /media/user/USB_DRIVE_NAME/

replace /dev/sdX with the correct device file name, you can use tools like gparted to find the name or just run the df command, you are looking for something like /dev/sdf as it was in my case.

Since i dont have a extra hard drive to spare right now i have not installed SteamOS(as it reportly wipes the whole drive), i have tried getting it to run in a virtual machine but the installer fails looking for installation files on the CDROM.

well the machine I'd be throwing it on has eufi, thanks for tips though! :yay:

thanks especially for the USB drive mounting tip... could be useful for me reinstalling arch without hassle .-.

My first impressions of SteamOS are not good. They've been working on this OS for how long and have really only managed to automate the install process but none of the post install tasks?

Good job Valve, I knew you were going to fail, but I never would have thought that you've failed this hard.

I have to admit, steam os could have been designed much better... Gnome 3 as a base is already a disaster in my opinion, why not something lighter like XFCE? Also, seeing as this is supposed to be a dedicated OS, why does the user have access to the desktop? I find being able to exit the steam interface breaks the immersion really badly.

It's a bit disappointing how little ground they've made so far, but what do I know about building a distribution?

Too bad you hate ubuntu, it's the closest one that meets your criteria. :umad:

Actually I'm curious as to what you use these days.

I use Windows 7 as a main OS. I keep multiple VM's ready to go if I get the urge. CentOS, Scientific Linux, Fedora, Gentoo, FreeBSD, OpenIndiana, Mint Debian Edition, I've even messed around in Hurd and Plan9.

Linux is a great server OS. and that's what I use it for.

This is what I started with, except I used the MATE edition. :P

could just carry a CD with a Kali Linux image on it, so then you can have valuable hdd space to Linux mint and Windows 7

i just wish linux could come with MS office.. i hate openoffice and i hate to use Wine
