Why do people hate WalMart ?

Im not too sure, but maybe it's because people feel their take down smaller shops, or maybe the quality isn't good? I really have no idea, I dont like shopping in them but thats because I hate crowded areas :)

Darn, now i feel bad.

I was actually gonna come here to say I liked walmart, they ALWAYS have the specific item I'm looking for and are open really late (i forget, are they 24 hours?). But now as you all point out, there is so much wrong with the stores and i feel like I shouldn't be supporting them...

I do agree though, the place reeks of fail and the types of people you likely see there are gross.

(Like, i went to walmart one day really late at night to get last minute supplies for my halloween costume, and there was only 1 register open. Some scary guy kept glaring at me and trying to cut in line, meanwhile there was a pissed off looking middle aged lady in front of me in her nightgown, with like 5 upset children in their pajamas/diapers. the diaper looked too big on one of them and was sliding off :eww: )

Dunno, I don't really have anything against Walmart myself, my local one is nice anyway. I guess I can understand the various criticisms against it though, they really should treat their employees better for instance.

Guessing it's got something to do with "dey took our DARBS!" mentality or something, but that honestly doesn't deter me from shopping there (when I'm in an area that's got a WalMart, that is). Decent prices are decent prices, after all. I understand that small businesses need to mark up their prices in order to survive, but consumers don't think like businessmen, they think like...um, consumers.

If there's anything I don't like about WalMart, it's the WalMartians - you'll never encounter a more disgusting collection of people at any other department store, I can guarantee you that.

the whole WalMart doesnt give benifits thing is far from the truth... anyway, thanks to everypony for there input :) props to the post about the door greeter ! ive been working there for 3 months now, they pay more than MW ( they pay me 7.85 while friends at mcdonalds get 7.25 ) and they give me consistant hours, no " managment bullying " ... im wondering where these horrible opinions come from :/ maybe WalMart used to suck, but i kinda like working there... EXCEPT SUNDAY !!!!!!!!!! everyone that comes in on that day to shop out of church seems to always be in a bad mood ( ironic. lol )

My reasons.. the cheap way they keep their employees down (full time work at part time wages, shitty treatment to some, favoritism is HIGH among those that are there)

Sub par quality products, and often damaged items sold at FULL price or falsely advertised (they had a 50" LG TV this past black friday advertised as 120hz trumotion, the TV carried neither function. But the majority aren't competent enough to realize this)

Most of the damaged products can be easily traced back to how they unload things though.

Basically its all thrown on a conveyer down in the truck and dumped off into the loading docks where the employees have to then stack and organize things.

This is why i DESPISE Walmart: http://www.meatvideo.com/ whoever decided it was okay to do buy from these people should rot in hell and drow- okay maybe i'm going a little far but still... HOW IS THIS LEGAL?! and i'm sure this doesn't make the meat taste any better... I AM RAGING SO HARD RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!

FYI thats not legal, not in the U.S. anyways.

Then end part with the fish is just stretching things too... I mean, really?.... I can see the dolphins (again, illegal state side anyways), but the fish..

The U.S. has strict regulations in the way the animals are put down, and usually its a bolt to the head for quick insta death before being hung and drained.

The chickens on the first conveyor (where the one was hanging off and it showed them getting the necks cut) are supposed to be dead already via "culling". Basically it involves snapping their neck. A quick/painless death. Its uncommon for one to slip through still alive.  Can't speak for the other parts much..

And if that video is from whom I think it is, chances are those people were paid off to do that stuff as it stands. They've been busted doing that repeatedly over the years on anything from paying people to club baby seals, to slashing a pigs throat on the floor.

Can't speak for other countries. But here if your company was caught even speaking of some of that stuff (such as a chicken farm could be investigated for using the term "wringing the neck", despite culling is about the same thing technically. But wringing has a stigma attached to it where the head dislocates and the chicken doesn't die) your company would be investigated heavily. Possibly shut down during said inspections too.

I know the chicken ones all to well since I raise my own, as well as ducks. To boot I know a couple people who work on chicken farms.

I also live next to a dairy farm, and not far from beef ones.. Basically I live in a farming community, and not much of what that video shows would slide here without someone being beat half to death and thrown out into the woods to rot. The legal backlash alone would be better off with attempted murder charges over losing your entire business over cruelty charges.

I've worked at Wal-Mart for a while now and I have to say that anyone who says employees don't get any benefits has no idea what they are talking about. For a crappy service job Wal-Mart gave me the best benefits I ever had. better than any of the small businesses I worked at. That rumor was started because Wal-Mart does not allow for unions. I'm not a fan of the company for my own reasons, but I just can't stand by while people put out misinformation.

Must have a good one then.

My Ex has worked for 2 of them so far and both are the same.

They keep employees working full time, but cut them short 1 day or so a month and list them as "part time" instead.

This keeps the company from having to pay out full benefits, and keeps the employee pay rates down.

Often they threaten people with termination if they even so much as speak of unions (which is illegal FYI), and have actually created false situations in order to fire people over this.

That aside, TMK there isn't much more to it.

Many hate Wal Mart because they view it as a greedy corporation that drives away small businesses and has poor customer service. I find it to be a decent store that generally has good prices and sub-par customer service.

I love Wal-Mart...

...as a small boy in West Yorkshire, I would often save coins I earned from my job as a newsie in a small marmalade jar in my cupboard. It was my dream to go see the circus, but mum had to work 7 jobs to feed her 9 children. We just couldn't afford to see the circus when it came to our neck of the woods.

So, after wandering the streets for a while, I stumbled across the most amazing place: Walmart.

It was a dream come true! You had bearded ladies, smelly old men, barefoot children, and employees who hated their jobs cleaning up the dung left behind.

It was just like the circus! It was like I had a front row seat to the Ringling Bros! :D

Walmart is a magical place, fulfilling the void left by children who couldn't afford to go to the big top for years! :D

Well, from my knowledge, Walmart takes over small businesses, at least where I live. They are opening up a Walmart near my house and it's going to cause a crap ton of traffic as well as close down a good will store. I also heard that they underpay the manufacturers and/or treat them badly. Even though my neighborhood started a petition to stop Walmart from opening up and closing down family owned businesses, they are still building it :I I really hate Walmart for doing that.

I hate Walmart because part of my salary goes to Walmart employees via food stamps, which they spend at Walmart. So even if I don't shop there, my money supports their machine.

Here's a two minute explanation video:

I have reasons to. Wal-Mart security has scarred me for life. Seriously. Most of the moral is to not trust Self Checkout, but still.

I was going X-mas shopping with my brother and grandma. I went through the Self Checkout, I was organizing my stuff. After that I got sent to a room next to the entryway, it had the security cameras. Here was security personnel making sure I didn't rob the store. I understand the season is common fare for robberies, but they nearly arrested me for LOOKING suspicious. My grandma and I were laughing today actually about if I had been. I could have gotten money from suing them for wrongful arrest! That was a funny thought. Still scares me a little.

Next thing, WTF with the M games? I understand they are rated that "for a reason." But that's 17+. NOT 18.

Pretty much every reason stated here is the reason why we don't have a Walmart in NYC. They've made many attempts to build one here but have always hit resistance from local businesses and their employees due to labor relations, pay scales, quality of service, threats to competition, etc.

Then there's the "dead peasant" policy that'll probably nail it for good, especially when people like this die for this corporation's greed.

Walmart started out as small general store turned mega franchise. Sam Walton seemed to have wanted to keep Walmart part of the small town vibe despite his stores being franchised.  However, come the 90's Walmart exploded as a MEGA retailer, making Walmart a store that wasn't overtly common, but everyone knew the name, to every major city within 100 mile of pretty much anywhere USA having 1 if not 2 Walmarts, as well as upgrading regular Walmarts into Supercenters.

Today, Walmart is either despised or loved. Why it is hated is pretty clear coming from the rural perspective. Any mega franchise retailer helps to make cities grow while the rural communities suffer as they shrink. Another problem Walmart, Target, and any mega retailer also does to small towns is make it outright impossible for small town grocery stores to compete. I don't mean 2nd rate stores such as IGA, Piggly Wiggly, Shopko, or other localized franchises.  They are able to get by because most towns they are in have a substantial enough population to bring in revenue, but not enough to have Walmart build a store there. I'm talking about the REALLY small town grocery stores that all but dead and gone. The little family owned stores that are bit more $$$ but save you gas, and keep the revenue within the town. I work at one of these as the only employee, and if it wasn't for the meat locker aspect to our store, we wouldn't survive.

Financially speaking now, Walmart is like the McDonalds of retailers, low-moderate wages for employees, super cheap second rate crap. If you want real goods/food, you go to a local, non/small franchise restaurant or to higher end good stores such as Kohls, JC Penny, or really any store in a localized mall. It's all more expensive, but for the most part, it's most likely to be better quality. Also, speaking of quality, just take a look online at what any mega franchise company does to the workers overseas that MAKE the stuff you buy, they make pennies working in dangerous, poorly controlled conditions and aren't even able to care for themselves let alone families with their wages. Walmart is not the only one guilty of this though! To get "cheap" prices for us, they make it cheap on everything but higher up (office, CEO's, etc) wages. They are most likely doing what they can to get out of taxes since they have to money to do so, misa-advertise goods that are "Made in the USA" (oftentimes read the small print, MADE in China/somwhere else, packaged in the USA), and often have poor quality foods that are either too old to sell (out of date), or are made on mega farms that use gratuitous amounts of pesticides and herbicides (I'm not even talking about environmental friendliness here, most mega retailers overdo themselves in keeping perishable products "last" longer and "go farther" than any smaller franchise). It is LEGAL to keep selling goods that are expired/out of date, and you won't win if you sue for food poisoning. It's the fine print of walking into any store that you may buy outdated products and it's perfectly legal.

Walmart is the biggest name in American retailing, so if they do anything wrong (or any other retailer), Walmart is the scapegoat (just as McDonalds is for fast food wage wars going on right now in the media). All mega retailer's/food sellers cut as many corners as they can to get more bang for their $$$ at the expense of customers, employees, and any taxpayer who doesn't go to such places.  Everyone suffers, whether it be through cancerous goods in food, cheap clothes from Bangladesh, employees who live paycheck to paycheck just to put food on the table, and anyone who has to pick up the slack of these companies getting out of taxes (i.e. all taxpaying Americans).

Now don't get me wrong, Walmart has done a few things right, making goods available under one roof, allowing for busy people to get in and out without having to store hop.  They just about anything you need (on the cheap side of the coin) or want. But it all comes at a price.

Remember everyone, There Is No Such Thing As a Free Lunch!  TINSTAFL

pardon my bad spelling, I just went through the spell check quickly, oftentimes my hands type too fast for my brain to keep up :P

That's pretty informative, as a tourist, I tend to visit Walmart very often, and when I lived in the US for 8 months (to improve my English) didn't change things much (I frequented Publix more often though). I'll see what non-franchise markets I can find if I manage to emigrate there (legally of course  :P )

Well, I just shopped there yesterday and am about to take off to do an emergency milk run there x___x

I'll say the negatives for me with my experiences as a customer, is the employees don't always seem to want to help customers. They almost avoid talking to them at times it feels, and I once rang the bell at the fabric-cutting counter and had to wait 15 minutes before someone came over to help me. Other workers would just ignore me, walk by, or say they'd get someone else then never did.

I kept ringing it then finally one that looked they were thinking about keeping on walking, stopped by and helped.

No one was eager.

I needed to get ribbon cut so I could bleeping buy it.

SUPPORT THEIR PAYCHECK THAT THEY'RE THERE FOR.

I think the only reason to like the Walton family is the fact that they created the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and are huge patrons of the arts in general.  Crystal Bridges rivals any big New York art museum, so if you live in the middle of the country its great. -> http://crystalbridges.org/

On the otherhand, most if not all of the things said above are also true :-/  I've worked at a Walfart before and NO they do not treat employees better in their home state (Arkansas).  You have to sign a waiver at the point of  hire that you won't unionize (there are posters and videos in the training room showing how evil the idea is).

CAUSE ITS A PRETENTIOUS HELLHOLE/SLAVE OPERATION WITH NO COMMON DECENCY, ASININE SALARIED MANAGERS, OVERPRICED MILK, AND ONE OF THE DIRTIEST STORES ON THE PLANET!! .... On top of that they undermine locally owned businesses, and cause them to go out of business, ruining lives.....

Ok, I personally try and avoid Wal-Mart for boring reasons. Traffic, Parking, Cleanliness, and short Staffing. That is what matters to me more. I'm not picking and choosing where I shop based on social justice ideas. In Florida we have a grocery chain called Publix that may be more expensive ... but it saves time shopping there. I prefer the local meat and produce markets too. If it's electronics ... online. Hardware ... I hit a hardware store where I can get someone to answer some specific questions and give input since I don't want to cause more damage.

It takes far too long to get in and out of Wal-Mart. Not worth the pennies.
