How do you feel about donations on the Internet? Ie the angry video game nerd movie was funded via donations. Some sites use donations as an income stream.

If people are willing to donate to whatever it is that is their choice.

Depends.  I've donated to things that interest me, various Kickstarters, and this place.

Well, if people beg for donations, then it puts me off. Otherwise, I'm happy to donate if I have some spare money.

Normally I'm far more likely to buy product, or subscribe, in order to support individuals than do straight donations. But I do have exceptions. I tend to donate if someone who I appreciate the work of is having a serious issue (like an artist needing shoulder surgery, or the like). However, there are so many people having issues it's impossible to help them all. I'm more likely to donate if the issue is presented in a matter-of-fact way without any attempt at histrionics or pleas to emotions, because I'm old, and I've heard too many false sob stories.

And by beg I mean constantly whine and make up fake sob stories.

Most any kind of project will need funding at some point. So long as the person receiving the money isn't spamming their need for money all over the place, being fraudulent, and so long as they are sufficiently grateful towards their donors, I don't see an issue with it. When people see something that is important enough to them to support financially, I'm completely ok with them doing it.

For those that are just using it to gain money or are just outright begging.. no deal, and not sure why people would give in to them.

Some of the sob stories I've seen are pretty FUBAR too. Saw one person try to claim they had cancer and were dieing and needed money etc... bit of research showed they were just some attention seeking child making up stories. And they had done it before..

So I'm rather skeptical of random online sob stories overall.

 

TBH though I won't donate to charities either. I've seen where they tend to put that money in reality, and it is NOT often where they claim it is. Most of it gets tied up in administrative things, or handed over to some government agency for wherever they're supposedly trying to help.

very little ever makes it to those they claim its going towards.

 

The Red Cross for one is known to have stockpiles of supplies of all sorts, supplies they claim they need more of, and are keeping the large stocks "just in case"....

 

So unless I'm handing it directly to the individual in need, or personally know the charity that is involved, I'm a little mistrusting.

 

As for kickstarter style things and such.. If a service is being provided and the price is right, I'm game.
Only ever backed 2 things myself, and in fact just got my copy of a game I backed awhile ago

Its really well done, and looking great. Only miff is that they appear to be doing episodic content, and only gave me the first episode.... Not kewl given I was promised the FULL game....

I think it comes down the how obnoxious the person is about it, I've seen some internet personalities that spend 20% of the video begging for subs, money, faves, ect to the point it's down-right distracting.

I don't often donate,but when I do.it's for something I'm interested in and they're not out right begging for donations. Like I've donated to a couple brony fueled projects of the sort and a couple websites.

 

The worst IMO for asking of Donations are those 5+ minute long ads for starving kids in africa (Which seem to only come out during this time of year....coincidentally).I mean how many people actually donate to that?

I think it all depends for the cause, as long its not towards something that promotes hate and stupid stuff, then if i have the money i donate for it.

 

In the case of game development and such, ebbeging is kinda the norm for the simple reason of the big company's that crush the little guy just because they have the money, case and point the creator of megaman got 3 projects of hes including hes own creation by capcom just cause the company didnt feel like it, so he had quit leaving behind hes creations, by starting hes own kickstarter to jumpstart he's new IP, he now can deliver hes fans of hes previous game what he wants instead of being under the tumb of a big company, so in this case donations and ebbeging can be beneficial in the long run.

 

But as this being said, you if you are gonna donate you have to do your research on what you gonna donate, some company's do great stuff but does other you may not agreed, so im all for donations and ebbeging, I usually donate for stuff that's mostly not supported cause there are thing that already receive to much donations and grants such as any cancer research while other stuff gets overlooked, so i rather support something that may do better help than to paid scientist millions of dollar they already get granted by the government already.
