It has an envelope symbol on it. She's officially a mailmare! Oh wait, on closer inspection, maybe it's a muffin.

the resolution at that level makes it appear as a decorative buckle at best.

...

If Rainbow Dash had been there, she would've laughed at her dreams of joining the Wonderbolts. Rainbow Dash appears to put out as compensation for insecurity. And having a close friend like that, I mean, BFF's (May the bes pet win, RD went to Fluttershy's house in the Super Cider/Flim Flam episode, their friendship goes back to fillyhood, etc. etc.) especially. It would've probably made Rainbow Dash cry worse than Rarity or Pinkie, or both combined.

I mean, she's got this huge dream that she's always excited and going on about, it touches the core of who she is (Rainbow = Public grandeur, bravado. Dash = Speed, thrill.), she's always practicing for it, and her BFF she's always known since Fillyhood, and the reason she got her cutie mark (defending Fluttershy), tells her how rediculous her dreams are, doubtlessly something she worries about already.

That would hurt.

...

but rainbow dash's character would be be far more likely to choose to fight, even with tearful eyes. such insults would get a buck to the face, and soon it would boil down to FS's assertiveness vs RD's physical prowess, no win. RD was left out for her volatile nature, Twi for her unending logical approach (books cost nothing to read) and AJ for her demanding presence and volatility combined. pinkiy and rarity were the last remaining options for the lesson and story plan.

...

BFFs? I suppose everyone can have their own theory, and I highly doubt that Dash and Fluttershy are best friends. Sure they've known eachother since they were little fillies, but that doesn't nescesarily mean they are friends.

...

that kind of time easily results in a psychological bond that competes with sibling bonds, they may be very different but they are inevitably very very close. i know this from personal experience, there is one person i've known since before i can remember who i would almost call brother, but he and i are different all the way down to culture, this does not happen often, but the sands of time which can erode mountains can also built even stronger friendships.

BFFs? I suppose everyone can have their own theory, and I highly doubt that Dash and Fluttershy are best friends. Sure they've known eachother since they were little fillies, but that doesn't nescesarily mean they are friends. I mean, they simply don't go well together, Fluttershy is (before this episode) way to shy and pushover like to be Rainbow Dash's best friend. You can simply tell they wouldn't stand each other for long, as seen in the way Rainbow treats her in Sonic Rainboom and in Dragonshy. That certanly doesn't seem like best friend (I still have to wonder why the hell did she go to her house first in SSCS6000). Instead, Applejack fits much better as Rainbow Dash's best friend. They have a lot in common, I think Fall Weather Friends clearly puts them as best friends, the same way Green Isn't your Color puts Rarity as Fluttershy's best friend (Rarity, one of the two ponies that was with her during this episode, and this one is even more clear, Rarity even claims Fluttershy is her best friend, and we learn that they go to the spa together regularly). They are the two most girly of the bunch, so it's natural for them to be together.

If you read Lauren Faust's stuff she wrote, one of the main points of the show was how such a widely varied range of personalities could still be best friends.

And actually, I think FS and RD kinda complete eachother. Rainbow Dash is ordinarily kinda abrasive like that, it's not being mean, really, it's just her emotive way of interacting. And Fluttershy is almost made to be someone that doesn't mind being treated that way. If you watch that bit again, you'll see their differences in how they interact make them great friends, rather than hurt their ability to be friends. It wasn't that their differences were an issue - it's that the specific situation called for something out of Fluttershy's character. It's probably come up before, but this issue pales in comparison to how much it helps their interaction. (Ever had two people that want to be in charge in the same room, when something needs someone in charge? It doesn't go over well. Differences in assertiveness can help.) Plus, being friends for so long really is significant.

Though she's probably very good friends with Applejack, too. Applejack's very similar to her, so she's someone she can compete with and get the same stuff she dishes out.

But, I mean, they're all good friends. I'm pretty sure the name of the show is Friendship is Magic, and the fact that together they make the elements of harmony is a perfect illustration of how they call complete eachother.

But FS is the only one that Rainbow Dash has been friends with before they all met.

the resolution at that level makes it appear as a decorative buckle at best.

You're probably right about why Twi and AJ were left out, but her element of loyalty would probably keep her from getting physical. Her loyalty would make her get rid of anger and the fight impulse, which would instantly all melt into sorrow.

Even when she was discorded, her response was never to fight her friends, only to run from them. Even then she was displaying loyalty - it's just her loyalty for Cloudsdale won over her loyalty for the mane 6.

Once again, that'd probably be her response. Get really hurt and angry, melt the anger into sorrow towards her situation and herself as she runs off, and then probably practice really hard as a way to vent.

The story worked out great with Pinkie and Rarity, though. It's just I think the others should've come in after Fluttershy barricaded herself in her cottage...

I stand by my assertion that Pinkie PIe and Rarity were right for the episode but... I do think it was weird that the rest of the mane 6 did not show up after Fluttershy had boarded herself inside her cottage. You would think Pinkie Pie and Rarity would have told the others - unless they were busy changing weather, picking apples, and studying I guess.

She did fight Applejack in Fall Weather Friends... athough you could say Applejack started that one. Still, Rainbow Barely represents her element, she's the one who wanted to leave Fluttershy behind in Dragonshy, and left Pinkie and Rarity alone in the desert, even after Twilight told her to turn back

given RD's past reactions to insult/threat, i think she would have chosen to fight, and a whole new set of lessons would be inserted along with a multi chapter episode. sadly i again speak from experience.

It's pretty cool to see Rarity and Pinkie Pie hanging out. I think that was my favorite part of the episode. I was also hoping for some sort of sassy Fluttershy song but oh well. Merriwether is getting better at writing MLP, but someone else is credited with the story for that episode. Good episode overall. I am pleased with it.

in "dragonshy" she saw fluttershy as a risk to the mission (which was to deal with a threat to ALL equestria, including FS and the main 6) and in the last roundup pinkie and rarity were not the mission but AJ was... she stayed loyal to the goal. now why pinkie and rarity were left behind is more a failing on the other four together really

Exactly my thoughts.

In response, we need an episode that comes this close to ending badly, before they show up.

Twi, RD and AJ:

"Dear Princess Celestia, today we learned you should never be too busy for your friends when they need you..."

Hmm, on second thought, Rarity and Pinkie were the ones that cried, so maybe that's why they came back, since they figured it was their fault, and they needed to see Fluttershy personally and not get everyone involved. And they probably came straight back instead of going out of their way to tell anyone... You know, after they got done crying and rethinking their lives all night...

given RD's past reactions to insult/threat, i think she would have chosen to fight, and a whole new set of lessons would be inserted along with a multi chapter episode. sadly i again speak from experience.

It would be different for the other mane 5, though, since she has a strong bond of loyalty to them, as opposed to other sources of insult/threat.

Like for example, Copper in The Fox and the Hound, would not have stood in front of the shotgun over the prey for anyone other than his childhood BFF.

In the same way, Rainbow Dash might attack anyone else, arguably (i think not) the other mane 6, but not her childhood BFF... If Copper would take a shotgun blast and death for his friend, I think the element of loyalty might be able to take not attacking...

Wanting to leave Fluttershy behind was actually a show of loyalty towards Fluttershy. She was the only one who realized Fluttershy wouldn't be suited to go...

Overall, I think her shows of loyalty throughout the series have greatly outweighed those other cases. I should compile them sometime...

Loyalty towards Fluttershy? Come on she only cared about her slowing them down. She thought that she would just be plain useless! That's why she didn't want her to come.

OMG!

Inflation/cost of living increases AND junk mail in Equestria!

Also apparently wireless electronic amplification and transmission of sound. We haven't seen that since Spike had a microphone in "Fall Weather Friends" and Madden was doing the announcing at the Thunderbolts race in "Sweet and Elite". Does this mean Equestria also has long range radio broadcasts? Haven't seen any hint of that yet. Electronic sound amplification must be fairly knew. It has not been incorporated into their phonograph players yet. They seem to still rely on large trumpet style horns to increase the sound output mechanically. Scratch's sound board and turntables is an open question. I think she may power it magically instead of electronically.

PS. Is it me, or is Angel being a little Bitch in this episode?

B)

Well of course Derpy is in the episode. The entire season was made before this whole complaint began.

But they DID NOT REMOVE HER! It would have been a very easy thing to do.

The technology level in Equestria seems a bit schizophenic. There's also ponies using lanterns and carriages along with electric lamps in Read It and Weep and that arcade machine in Hearts and Hooves, among other things.

You are right, they could have altered her again. I feel so much better now. Oh, if you look earlier in this thread, you will find Derpy but I also pasted that picture into the Derpy discussion thread for you.

I have now watched this episode 4 times.

I think I like it too much...

If I had to critique it about anything though, it'd be that the plot itself is kinda linear. Fluttershy encounters bully after bully, with various results. Rinse and repeat. Mare-do-well had this kind of flow, though that entire episode itself was...ehh. I won't say anything. Despite the linearity, Putting Your Hoof down has so many good things to not only cancel it out, but make it a great experience: great music, outstanding animation (the pseudo-3D scene when Fluttershy was tied up, especially,) lots of good references and above all, humor. When all is said and done, this episode is just flat-out hilarious.

Oh. And Rarity and Pinky Pie together turned out to be a great combination. Also, Iron Will is the best ever.

Man this episode was an emotional roller coaster! I had like three Gilda level reactions to ponies hurting Fluttershy. When she started acting mean I was getting uncomfortable. When she said "the Fluttershy you know is gone!"

"Wait a minute! Bubbles? Oh God I know where this going!"

Then, with horror, she started to sound EXACTLY like she was Discorded, and my heart broke in two . . . again.

Locking herself away was just twisting the knife.

Thank Luna it turned out all right in the end!

Okay I'm tired of this I'm asking everypony right now! WHY THE HELL DO OTHERS LIKE IT WHEN FLUTTERSHY IS MEAN?! Not, "standing up for herself" not "bravely defending her friends" but genuinely nasty? What makes Fluttershy so wonderful is how compassionate she is. When Discord mindraped her, it broke my heart, because she was just so hatefully spiteful. I'm being honest here, what the Hell is the appeal?

Rainbow had a lantern powered by fireflies. I thought that was cute! It seems in Equestria, there is no real headlong rush for technological advancement as in our world. If it's useful, they'll incorporate something very sparingly. If they don't need it, they just do without. Somehow I think that makes pony-kind a lot more advanced then we give them credit for!

Makes sense. I suppose a world with magic doesn't have as much pressure to develop technology as ours does.

I kinda feel bad for Iron Will. All he did was tring to earn his money in a honest way. I think he deserved to get paid even though Fluttershy wasn't satifisfied. She had the results she wanted at first; it's just that she didn't like them. That's her fault!
