Colonization of Mars

First off, I need to say that I can't believe there isn't already a topic about this.

Okay, so I was in the bus last Thursday and I heard about this on the radio.  Apparently, sometime in 2025, they want to send people to colonize Mars, before having even set foot on it.  The thing though, is that it'll only be a one way flight, meaning they're supposed to live there and not return.  Here is the site where they explain it all:  http://www.mars-one.com/

I'm a bit skeptic about it, to be honest.  One would think that we'd try to colonize the moon before trying Mars, no?  After all, we didn't do it yet and it's way closer to us than Mars.  Second, we can't know for sure what Mars is all about because we didn't send anyone there yet.  Yes, we had pictures and sent ''things'' (sorry, I can't find how it's called in English :\ ) to know what is was like up close and all that, but no one living ever went there.  Sending people there to not return seems like sending them to their death (they did volunteer, but still...).  I don't think colonizing Mars is really a bad idea, but maybe it's a bit too soon to do it.

Anyway, what is your opinion on this?

This is a private company , but NASA tried to live on the Moon but it got canceled. Since it's private I think they can, but the. Again I'm also not very good at all that stuff :derp:

I only love you platonically.

As in plate tectonics.

As in two bodies sliding against each other.

Is the word you're looking for samples?

Anyway, Mars is actually more hospitable than our moon.  There is water in the soil, enough for a well.  As for the one way trip, Mars is only reasnobly close to Earth once every roughly 2 years.  Also, fuel for a return trip would be impossible to carry. I guess they can make greenhouses and stuff for food, but my only question with that is how they are going to get oxygen. They can only carry so much, and its pretty hard to get more. Also, electricity. I suppose they could have solars, but if they broke, the people would basically be done. I suppose it is feasible, however, i think that 2025 is a bit of a lofty goal.

No way I would ever volunteer, you gotta be pretty obsessed with mars to wanna go.  Actually that's kinda funny, I've never met anypony who has pictures of mars all over their room, goes to mars conventions, and posts on a mars forum!  I want to meet this person now.

I don't think colonizing Mars will be a good decision not only do we have to travel millions of kilometers to get to Mars, we also have to anticipate the dust storms on Mars, the temperatures, and you also can't forget the composition of gases on the planet.

You would have to be someone who would like to volunteer to go into space and go to Mars, so there's that.

oh and solar storms since mars does not have a magnetic field.

I think it's a horrible idea.

As humans, we're already destroying earth with polution. So let's ship off a select bunch of crazies and trash another planet?

These private companies should put their money to better use here on earth like: renewable energy, slowing down global warning, or anything that could help preserve natural resources.

Complete waste of time, energy and money if you ask me.

Sorry to be all negative.

Yes!  Sometimes I use google translator for words I don't know (or don't remember) but it gave me ''probe'', which I'm pretty sure has nothing to do with the context...

I swear I though it was a joke or something when I heard it on the radio.  I don't think we can do it right now, to be honest.

Ah, come on, I enjoyed it ;)  It's just bad when you lose your gloves and the car won't start up.  -40°C is not that bad :).

You sir, are a brave soul. Maybe you're just who they're looking for to volunteer for this...

I however, am content to living in Florida, and enjoying my 70 degree weather.

There's no way I'm volunteering for this  .  (I'm not suicidal)  There's no snow on Mars!  And there's no Europe on Mars either!  I just love my winters, that is all.  (I can't stand anything over 26°C).

I heard about it over a year ago. I'm always an optimist when it comes to these things. I believe that its possible, and its not that bad of an idea. They could learn a lot about Mars and other things while they're there. I don't think they could destroy Mars like people have destroyed Earth because only 4 people will be inhabiting it (at first anyway, they're going to send people in groups of four every two years I believe) Things like pollution and other problems on Earth, humans wouldn't really pose a threat for Mars, at least not now. Personally, I think its amazing, and even more so that it'll happen in my lifetime. Of course, I'd never volunteer myself haha. It'd be amazing, but I like my life here on Earth. Not willing to throw that away, even if I could go to Mars. :P I'm not qualified enough anyway, I'd be way to scared and freak out haha.

You should never live here... It rarely is below 30C in the late spring to early fall.

But we digress.

Things we need to realistically live on mars:

A way to generate oxygen

A reliable and long lasting way to generate power

A way to get a house and farm set up very quickly

Some kind of shield to protect against the sun and dust

It's true, I live in northern Alberta, I've mastered the art of igloo repair through my years of training.  Our families throw us into the frozen wilderness for initiation when we turn 13.  If we don't return with a polar bear head we're banished.  Welcome to Canada.

i wont vollunter unless i am 100% sure i wont get killed

Even then, it seems a bit boring :\  If it ends up being successful, I hope they have a lot of way to communicate with Earth because otherwise, being alone with a handful of people for the rest of your life would likely be depressive.

Seems like they want to do a reality show or something with it to help paying the funds.  I really hope the guy on the news is wrong when he says that it could be a morbid show on which we see them die one after the other, because that would be one hell of a lot depressing...  I mean, just look at their faces on the volunteers' list.

A one way flight, eh? I dunno; that seems a bit foolish to me. I understand that it would be hard to carry enough fuel for a trip to Mars and back, but I don't think a one way flight is the best way to go. I mean, Mars is a completely different planet, and there are just so many things that could go wrong; and the people there would never be able to leave Mars, I'm assuming.

So yeah, I'm content with living here on Earth, thank you very much :P

This is the most important undertaking of our race in many generations. Every democratic nation should be funding the hell out of space exploration and colonization. Who cares about going green and saving the environment? Let the freaking world burn for all I care. There's too much else to explore to worry about this has-been of a planet.
