Because of light waves being scattered. Blue is the second shortest wavelength, so it gets scattered more.

 

So... if purple is the shortest wavelength, can you explain why the sky isn't purple?

First of all, the sun emits less violet light than it does blue.  Also, the upper atmosphere absorbs very high wavelengths like violet light more than blue.  And finally, the violet light that reaches our eyes blends with the blue, creating the color that we see.  The reason the sky seems to be a pure color instead of a mix is most likely because our eyes evolved to easily recognize it.

Yeah, the night sky appears quite clear from where I live. I see most of the major constellations such as Orion, Cassiopeia, Perseus, Andromeda, Gemini, Lepus, Canis Major, Ursa Major, etc. I once saw a shooting star for the first time a few nights ago.

 

Speaking of which, what is your favorite constellation?
