Do ponies know the exact moment they get a cutie mark?

I thought I saw something like this a few days ago, but I can't seem to find it, so if anyone can direct me to it that would be great.

So do ponies know when they get a cutie mark, or do they have to notice themselves/get told by others?

Looking over Cutie Mark Chronicles, the answer would seem to be no, they don't know. After hatching Spike you can clearly see Twilight does not have her cutie mark, and a short while later has to have it pointed out to her by Celestia.

Rarity does notice getting hers, but she seemingly glances over from the flash when a cutie mark appears rather than because of the cutie mark itself. You can see a bunny react the same way when Fluttershy's cutie mark appears.

Applejack got her cutie mark right after going home in the presence of her family, who would have told her as soon as they noticed. Probably the same for Pinkie Pie.

RD is an unknown. Someone could have told her she had it right after the race ended.

The way they word things make it seem like they know the exact moment, but the actual flashbacks can go one way or the other for some of them.

It seems like it produces a noticeable effect, but they don't know what to make of it at the time. I imagine it's often the same with a number of once-in-a-lifetime feelings. Regardless, it seems more tied into their physical senses rather than some inner intuition, definitely. Which leaves them able to be ignorant to it, or be distracted enough to not catch on immediately.

If your butt suddenly lights up and you hear some sound effect relatedly, chances are you know crud just happened.

If your running wildly while something's chasing you, or something similarly distracting/thought-consuming, you may miss it and find out later on.

Tl;dr. I don't think they instinctively know.  :)

It sounds like one of those things that they might not notice right away, but they start to notice later on in their lives once their talent has been revealed. Most ponies would be too distracted to notice yet, then they start to catch on once they are more focused.

If your talent appears on your flank, you might hear a sound effect to help you notice that you got it.

I don't think that Ponies feel it physically or have a definite sense (or actually hear a sound effect) when they get their cutie marks. Because it is a big occasion for a young Pony, and because it is the result of a key moment of realization in life, some or many may have an intuition/gut sense, but would need to see it or have it pointed out to actually know (hence the CMCs always looking).

Well it is something that can go without being noticed at first.

When Twilight got her cutie mark, She didn't even notice it happen. It was Princess Celestia who pointed it out to her.

So I guess that if there's enough going on around them to be distracting, they won't notice because they don't instinctively know.

It seems like every single aspect of a cutie mark is linked to self discovery, even if that means discovering that you just got one!

I don't think they notice instantly, because I thin in the case of the CMC they wouldn;t have to keep checking to make sure it was there, and the times with the joke outlines for cutie marks that just washed right off as they got their hopes up. I think you may possibly instantly be able to notice once it actually appears, but you want to make sure that it is indeed what oyu think it is. Haha, but that moment will surely define itself.

I don't like answering this question, because when I think about it I think of the ending to "Flight to the Finish", when I guarantee everyone thought Scoots was going to get her Cutie Mark, I cried so hard.

I'm kidding, I don't mind answering your question! ^^ (\

Anyways, I believe they do.

When a pony gets her Cutie Mark, it's when they realize just what talent makes them special.

And I think realizing something and knowing something kind of fall under the same category.

That's what I think, anyways! ^^ (\

Just stare at your flank, and you'll see if you achieved a new rank.

Your cutie mark only comes when you know what you desire, force it, and the results can be dire.

Zecora the whimsical rhyming zebra. Now on bluray!

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it save equistria with its five candy coloured friends and shoot rainbows at bad guys using their necklaces and tiara unless you're celestia
