The Financials of MLP

I can only guess how you or anyone else will take it but Hasbro has been seeing record sales and revenues from its MLP franchise while many other toy companies or franchises are struggling.

Well, to the bronies who have been buying official merchandise, you've made some investors quite happy.

Now, lets hope they don't let all that revenue go to their heads. If they just continue with the current quality of the show, they will have a near endless expanding amount of revenue, but should they act like a normal company and begin cutting corners because "we can afford it" it is going to hurt their franchise in the long run.

Well, what can ya expect? They inadvertently gained support from a whole other(rather large) demographic of people. And they didn't even have to do anything to get it. It is a company's wet dream.

That said, I'm happy with the way Washington Post approached this topic. Informational and without bias, even giving the brony culture a neutral-positive attribute in regards to the whole topic. It's not something you see everyday.

I'm also curious as to the implications of this. It mentions Hasbro's massive profit increase, whilst Mattel sadly has been falling significantly. Could this imply that bronies may have an impact on the future of these to companies?

Well the added revenue from the brony fans has increased their profits so much that during their investor showcase, they actually acknowledged our existence, and said that they may be marketing towards us in the future. This is a huge step forward for this group of people and the company, as they are one of the first companies to understand that their adults fans exist, provide revenue, and are marketable towards, without alienating their children demographic. Bronies may come to play a large role in hasbro's future with the mlp franchise.

Wouldn't it be great if Mattel would do a Barbie with her Pinkie Pie plush or MLP themed clothing, etc?  That could be a lot of fun.  There have been Barbie dolls with Hello Kitty clothes on.  Tokidoki could do the characters on higher end bags and wallets- they have also collaborated with Hello Kitty's Sanrio company.  Swarovski could do the same- high end MLP jewelry.

What is very interesting about this is that (forgive me if you don't feel this way) but the merchandise available is for the most part pretty awful unless you get the fan made items on Ebay or at the cons.  Think of all the money they could make if they actually put their minds to it.

This is probably exactly what's going on over there too. But good for them regardless. Hopefully this means we'll get more quality My Little Pony products and episodes in the future.

It does annoy me when Bronies say that we're the main purchasers of MLP products, when it's just not true. In fact it's the Equestria Girls dolls, a part of MLP we Bronies have no love for, that is making Hasbro the Benjamin's!

If we see quality pieces like the fan made plushies and the welovefine statues ... they'll have three members of my household lining up.

I'd like to point out the important correlation does not imply causation fine print for any bronies who might let this go to their heads...

"Did My Little Pony’s popularity spark the birth of bronies, or did bronies push a retro toy back into the spotlight? Alternately did both things spring from a third event entirely — namely, Hasbro’s 2010 relaunch of the My Little Pony line?"

From the article of the original post: To quote directly from Hasbro’s most recent earnings release: “The Girls category grew 21% in the first quarter 2014. MY LITTLE PONY, MY LITTLE PONY EQUESTRIA GIRLS and NERF REBELLE [essentially a pink Nerf gun] contributed to the continued strong growth in the category.”

Grew 21% more in the Girls category? Hmm... that beats a certain rainbow-maned pony's most memeable quote by 1%. >_>
