Does A Unicorn's Magic Change Color?

Twilight Sparkle's magic turned from a pale purple to a dark magenta from season 1 to season 2.

Probably this is due to inconsistency in the first season, but let's just speculate.

 

Do you think that that the magic changes color depending on how much stronger you get?

I think it's a definite possibility.

 

Because Alicorn magic and Sombra's type of dark magic are black and green with a bit of dark violet.

 

And the dark magic of the Alicorn amulet turned Trixie's magic red while she was wearing it.

In Magic Duel, Trixie's horn aura changed from a light purple to an evil red. So with certain spells casted that can take somepony over, then yes, unicorn's magic color can change.

We can hand wave Twilight's change by saying perhaps the colour deepens as the pony grows more powerful or competent with their spells. So it doesn't change exactly, just becomes richer as the skill of the caster advances.

 

And obviously, we have dark magic corrupting the aura and making it do all sorts of weird things. But that's a whole 'nother thing.

I think when a unicorn is under the influence of powerful magic, their own magical aura can change color. For example, Sweetie Belle's magic turned sparkly blue when she was attacked by Discords vines, and Rarity's magic turned green when she was under the influence of the Inspiration Manifestation.

I think it changes because you know how to use dark magic. Rarity knew dark magic when she read that book and her magic changed color.

Well, one obvious reason is that of being under the influence of a different type of magic.

Other than that, I think the only other explanation is a dramatic increase in how powerful your magic becomes, and it might be possible for it to change when a transformation into an Alicorn occurs.

Anyway, I think their magic will change only when corrupted by outside forces in canon. Twilight and Rarity's inexplicable change is most likely an error

All of the above about varying levels of power naturally affecting the color of one's magic is pretty much what I was thinking. I figured there might be more of a psychological element to it when it comes to magical items, however.

 

The alicorn amulet is red, and red is generally seen as a powerful and aggressive color, which are certainly accurate descriptors for Trixie while she was under its influence; and so, her magic became red too. Rarity's magical aura turned green after invoking the Inspiration Manifestation. Green is sometimes seen as representing wealth and jealousy. Once receiving its power, Rarity went on a spree of turning every mundane thing she could into the most opulent display she could imagine, and thinking that nobody could appreciate her work and vision (except Spike). Seems the color fits the mood here just as with the alicorn amulet.

 

 

So maybe color does naturally deepen or slightly shift in some way as one's level of power grows, but enchanted items can completely change the color depending on the abilities bestowed.

Well, first Twilight's magic matched the color of her eyes. But then Twilight's magic was changed to match the color of her Cutie Mark.

 

Well, Celestia's aura changed from blue to golden between S1 and S2, but I believe that was a retcon.

Same case I think! Since Celestia has blue eyes, her aura was blue, but then it was changed to golden because of her sun cutie mark.

 

 

 

Maybe something that happened in the show made their magic change color but it wasn't stated directly.

Twilight's did a couple of times.

 

The reason for the change is unknown.

 

It could be for her getting older, getting stronger in magic, or just because the artists felt it would look better this way.
