Forum Medals

Well, I made a post on @, Thread: New Ranks.  Yet, I felt that my post would be more suitable as a Topic.  First, for those who have been around Halo Waypoint, you might understand what i mean, but if you weren't, this is how it works.  Each week members are rewarded medals by their dedication, creativity, etc.  Such as this:

  • "Community Member of the Week" - members who have been active and provided perfect detail posts should be rewarded with something.  Each week, one member is rewarded this medal by others who nominate that member on a "Nomination thread". The image of a CMOTW medal would be the Wonderbolts Medal.
  • "Friday Caption Fun" - basically what admins do is post a random comedy picture on the News/Blog each week and also make a thread of it, giving members the opportunity to be creative by coming up with a humorous joke regarding the picture.  The image of FCF would be Pinkie Pie's cutie mark.
  • "Art of the Week" - each week, Admins would post a thread on one particular subject like "Twilight and Spike", giving artists a chance to be creative with something involving Twilight and Spike and on Thursday, admins, ponyville staff, and Mods would judge on whats better and 5 of those selected artists would be rewarded this medal.  Once selected, another subject is posted.  The image of this medal should be a "paint brush and paint board".

.........this is just part A of the idea, but i've got plenty of others for each section, specifically, Roleplay; Art; Music/Remix; etc.

Now, someone mentioned to me about Community Member of the Week and fearing that the medal would lead to a "popularity" debate.  Since I also replied to that, here is how that would be performed, to avoid that conflict:  On Waypoint, those who are nominated are those who dedicated there time here, making constructive posts, giving positive feedback on a specific subject, etc.  With regards with having the same group over and over again, sometimes, what we do is re-nominate 1 and only 1 member from the previous week, and choose another 5 people.  Once that week is up, then you may go back to your previous choices from the week before.  For instance:

For this week, I nominate:

@@ghostfacekiller39, @@Champion RD92, @@Scootalove

and Scootalove wins this weeks CMOTW, then I can choose one of my previous choices, then spend time on these forums, not only going through topics, but seeing who makes constructive, strong, well-written posts, and I nominate them.  And after that week, I can go back to the week before and choose the remaining one.  So if I voted Champion for CMOTW, b/c he didn't win the last week, then I would have to place him aside and vote for Ghostie, and then repeat the process.   It may sound complicated but it would make it fair b/c it would give members a chance to nominate other great members instead of re-nominating the same members, over and over again,

@Ghostie, Scoot, & Champion

Sorry about that again.  Was giving an example but no worries, ;)

Feel free to discuss your opinion, b/c I would like to read them and see how you feel about this.  It could be Positive, Negative, or Neutral, but im curious to know, :D

I dunno, even with your restrictions and rules set n place, it seems like it'll only lead hurt feelings and bloated heads.

Such are popularity contests.

It'd be a tad better if it was a monthly deal. But...Not by much.

But that's just me.

EDIT: if this passes, then I definitely aren't getting the positivity medal...

People would feel this is a popularity contest, unfortunately, and status upon status and blog upon blog would be made regarding the subject of "Why didn't I get this? I totes deserved it." and whatnot.

Even though it sounds like it'd be a great way to promote good behavior and all of that nifty business, feelings would ultimately be hurt and such, which, would go against what said medals are trying to promote in the first place.

While I must say your heart definitely seems to be in the right place, I can't say I agree with this, on account of the fact that these sort of things end up making more members feel left out than anything good would come out of it.

While I defend topics like "Who are your favorite members?" and "Who are your best friends?" because the label of "elitist" that they receive is just silly and illogical, I can see where it can be applied here, in the sense of people like Champ, Scootalove, and myself (not trying to sound cocky) get far more attention whenever we say something than members who often have just as good, if not better, things to say in regards to the topic at hand but don't get the same level of attention more well-known members would get. It wouldn't be very fair to them, and even though complete equality is something that will never be achieved, that doesn't mean we shouldn't strive for it in an attempt to better ourselves, not just as human beings, but as a community.

So, while I can appreciate the positivity you're displaying (and, to an extent, wish I had the same enthusiasm) I can't see anything good coming out of a system like this. Sorry.

The others already covered it, it'll turn into a popularity contest then a subsequent butthurt recovery session.

Besides, everyone knows the most prestigious honor someone can receive on MLP Forums is a Doctor XFizzle *pelvic thrust*

They're simply titles and they aren't needed. This has been a recurring question on the forum and still lingers about, and no doubt in the near future. There's not going to be any second thoughts about it and most likely to be dismissed. If you go on other forums, I've yet to see any medal system(s). It's unnecessary.

As others said, they don't want to see me butthurt since I won't get a medal. I'll be like pissy.

I see where most of you are coming from.  Yet, it would be nice to have, but like most of you said, there would be some uproar over members demanding reasons why they didn't recieve a medal.

I completely forgot about those threads.........you have a major point there.

Nah... it would skyrocket the popularity contest through the roof, like if it's not annoying enough.

In fact, all the people you nominated are popular forumers.

Well,, I was just giving an example on how it would work in a way.    Not to menton, didn't want to tag a new member so they could come here looking around saying "I was nominated? For what?" type of thing, if you know what i mean.  Yet.....it make go through the roof, but like i said, its better to change nominations every week to avoid "repeating and renominations".
