How are they a deus ex machina?

It was a insta-win against Tirek out of nowhere, just like the EoH was a insta-win against Discord and Nightmare Moon out of nowhere(certainly out of nowhere in Nightmare Moons case,i wasn't expecting what i figured to be a major villain to be beaten in a few seconds once confronted and given a speech by the mane 6). :maud:

There was no struggle once Rainbow Power activated -- once the box opened it was game over for Tirek.  :maud:

90% of the resolutions to the problem of the week are deus ex machinas. It's either EoH, Twilight knowing the right spell, or a character realizing something blindingly obvious that fixes everything.

Rainbow Power fits right in, if you ask me. Besides, it really is just the Elements of Harmony in a slightly different form:

I believe we cannot get an accurate picture on what Rainbow Power does, what its weakness is, and what IT IS in general. With the Elements of Harmony, it was ambiguous at first too, but then world building happened, and we came to an understanding of  the Elements of Harmony and it's impact on the world. I believe only time will tell what RP actually is/does...

The EOH certainly were not deus ex machinas. That was whole point they went to find them, since they were established to be the way Celestia had previously beat Nightmare Moon.

As for the Rainbow Powers, I'd argue that although they weren't clearly established to be replacements for the elements, that could certainly be implied since it came from the Tree of Harmony. Also the characters seemed pretty sure that it would work.

M'kay, see them how you want, its not my concern how you perceive the EoH and Rainbow powers as a deus ex machina or not, that's how i see them.  :maud:

No, it's just a deus ex machina to sell toys which is an even worse writing problem.

Until proven otherwise i say they are a deus ex machina..atleast its pretty and colorful.

The EoH and RP have never qualified as deus ex machina. They don't fit the established rules since their use has been foreshadowed or telegraphed. That makes them something wholly different. This is weird because no one in the critical literary circles uses this term much because a true DeM is uncommon. Now on every message board in the last 10 years, I see this is a constant complaint when it does not apply.

It's like ad hominem - some popular pseudo intellectual somewhere misused a word and BAM ... the unsuspecting masses use it incorrectly for years.

>_>

The RP are a predicable (see what I just did there) macguffin resolution (the light of God in the Ark).

By the way this isn't opinion or something with multiple meanings. You can't say that I interpret Falling Action to be the element of a story where everything is wrapped up. This isn't a matter of interpretation. You would be wrong. It has clear and accepted definition in the Literary community. You can't call a Fuel Tank a Transmission!

My whole point of calling them such was a deliberate exaggeration and over use of the word, idk what they are and don't care beyond the fact they are colorful.  :maud:

Couldn't have said it better myself. As always, you continue to be a top notch poster here :)

Wrong. It wasn't foreshadowed and came out of nowhere. It's a deus ex machina. Edited by Grumpy Enchantress

It seems the show keeps pulling new powers out it's...

Really we had the tree of harmony which made the elements of harmony which was BS.

Suddenly there is this super duper power which just happened to have it's own toy line and was never mentioned before.

This little girls show does not stand up to scrutiny. I'm leaving the fandom.

See you all here tomorrow.

Rainbow Power is just like Super Saiyan in a nutshell

Ok, serious now. Rainbow Power is basically EoH with colourful rainbow make up since they can't access EoH directly. They're kinda OP in the first place and will always be.

I think anything that one shots the main antagonist when he is clearly ready to kick flank for days is op. It would of bwen much more satisfying if they had to work together and use their skills and abilities that were Heightened by that power up to take down Tirek than just making him taste the rainbow.

So, Rainbow Power:

-Completely OP, even more so than EoH.

-Replacement for EoH, which at least was a loan from the Tree of Harmony itself.

-Used in a very special circumstance.

-Doesn't have a known, material trigger. So they probably can't use it as they desire.

-In itself a cheap way to beat the worst bady yet. However, it was hinted at since the very beginning of the season and required a special kind of character building.

-Even more flashy and obnoxious than EoH.

-Comes with another toy line, woohoo...

-Should be forgotten and never used again, unless they face something even worse.
