Definitely not. -
So I was scouring the internet as usual, and I just happened across some interesting news. There's another Dissidia Final Fantasy in the works. Right now, there's only plans for it to be released in Japanese arcades, but I'm not so secretly hoping for console port plus a localization, naturally. Anyway, they showed that it will have 3v3 combat and of course the graphics are much better when you're not working with a psp. Here's the trailer they released: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPrXNBevqFk Dissidia has always been that series that I felt could do so much more on a bigger screen and it looks like they're finally taking that step. For those of you which have never heard of Dissidia ( a quick and dirty explanation of the previous games) Well, there you have it, a Dissidia topic. A topic where we can talk about how much we love pummeling Final Fantasy characters with other Final Fantasy characters and how the music alone blows Super Smash Bros. out of the water.

Maybe it's just me, but "pleasure" always makes things sound just a tad bit dirty. Learning to play some of my favorite songs I hear in games on my alto sax by ear. I suppose I wouldn't be so quiet about it if the people I'm usually around with my saxophone actually appreciated the music from video games or at least respected it. Oh well, it's incredibly fun either way. Just thinking about it makes me want to start right now.

He may sound a bit harsh, but he does bring up some fair points. And I say this as someone that loves a good sequel: part of me loves the idea of Disgaea continuing on forever. Oh and Danganronpa, and Final Fantasy and the Tales of, and, and... Still, as long as they get spaced out properly with other new, original titles, I'm pretty happy as a consumer. So I think that there's no problem with Nintendo raising those franchises back from the dead as long as they introduce other newborn titles into the mix, just to break up the monotony. I think the rehashing problem is much bigger in fps market.

It's times like this that make me wish my car would play songs off my phone or ipod or something. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-a3XbazNLvg And then a song to put me to sleep. I could have used this 4 hours ago, but better late than never, shuffle.

When it comes to the main numbered series, my nostalgia index says VIII. Overall, my nostalgia index says Crystal Chronicles. Nowadays I'd say that I hold the most love for the XIII series. Final Fantasy 8 was just my intro to the franchise. Admittedly, I remember it more fondly than I actually like it now. Oh well. Crystal Chronicles was the most fun game I had for the gamecube at the time. I play this game nonstop with my cousin and friend, staying up like all day and night during the summer. The only game that could even compare was Tales of Symphonia. I really miss the days where we could all sit down on the same couch or floor and just play through an entire game together. And don't even get me started on the music in the game; I really wish I could hear more from Kumi Tanioka. The instrument selection adds so much character to the game. One of the most memorable original soundtracks. And, My god, is there so much hate for Final Fantasy XIII, and yet I can't help but love it. And yeah I "game over"d in that game way more than 7 or 8 or 12, despite having that auto battle option. The paradigm system really was where the bulk of the battle centered around not so much what attacks you chose.

gaming Mewtwo Returning in SSB4. What's the big deal?
Mutemutt replied to James A Williams's topic in Media Discussion
Yeah, Mewtwo was the original big name legendary of series along with mew. Mewtwo just gets a lot of love and is a classic as far as pokemon goes. What does he have, like, 3 movies now? And then he was replaced in Brawl by Lucario. I was flabbergasted. It was akin to replacing Pikachu with an Emolga (of course, pikachu is still the biggest face of Pokemon, what with the anime and all). -
As for the whole, hardcore vs casual, real gamer topic going on... I have to say, and this probably isn't a popular opinion, that I completely understand why gamers would separate themselves like that. Humankind just likes to breaks the world down into categories and there will be those they identify with and those they don't. The "Us" and "Them". It is a natural thing that everyone does throughout their lives. These days, games run across many different genres and many differing appeals to them. It's not hard to see that if person B only likes mobile games and person C hates mobile games but loves all other games, they may not have all that much in common. Simply playing games is no longer enough. The group "gamer" has just become too broad to accomplish it's main task, and so they created some subgroups. There's no need for one group to be so snobby towards the other, but I completely understand why they've separated themselves from each other. I get that not everyone will agree on the term. I just wanted to know what it meant for you, just so I could understand what you meant when you used it. It didn't hold any particular meaning for me so I was a little lost when I saw "the spirit of gaming". "Hardcore/casual gamer" are just as intangible, it's true, though they do see a lot of use. It's gathered around a few popular meanings now. It's still very much a "gut feeling" kind of term though.

You win this round... :okiedokielokie: But despite releasing at the end of the 20th century, the ps2 did spend the majority of it's lifespan in the 21st century. Still, "best selling console of all time" is not too shabby a title. By the way,@@TailsIsNotAlone and @@BrilliantVenture, what is this "spirit of gaming". I'm afraid I don't really understand what it means for you two.

Ha! "Hardcore gamer" and "casual" need an entire topic of their own. That's just another big old can of worms. But yeah, I get the feel hardcore gamers aren't Nintendo's target audience as well.

You know, I think the people that hate Nintendo are mostly just people on the bandwagon. Likely they've never had any interest in Nintendo much less played any of their games. It probably sprung up from the console wars; whenever they'd (Sony and Xbox fanboys) get tired of fighting each other, they would just pick on Nintendo which they thought of as "not even in their league". Poor Nintendo, getting picked on by the big (and ironically much younger ) kids on the block. Which kind of leads back to my previous point of just the way people perceive Nintendo.
-
Oh they're having fun, they just moved to a different system to do it. You're right that they are changing what they look for in a game, but what's changing about it is what they find entertaining in games. Just like a kid growing up can lose interest in the dolls and action figures they used to play with, gamers can lose interest in the games or genres they used to love. Consider the thought that even though someone may like Nintendo games they may enjoy games not found on Nintendo consoles even more.

Nintendo is certainly not dropping out of the gaming business anytime soon. You can be sure of that. And let's not even talk about their handheld console, 90% of the population forgot Sony even has a new handheld now. But, for certain demographics, I suppose you could say they are irrelevant. They don't have a ton of 3rd party support going on and they've always maintained a very family friendly image. It's not surprising that people start to get the feel that all you can expect from Nintendo is colorful, cartoony, "kiddy" games when that's most of Nintendo's big name titles. All of the consoles now tend to draw their own crowd largely based on the type of games you can expect to release on it. An expectation born of advertisement either by the company itself or players just talking about the games they're most looking forward to on that console. I'm going to do a bit of exaggeration here but when you see someone say "Nintendo is amazing. They got Mario, Mario Kart, Mario Party, Mario and Golden Goomba. Oh and Bayonetta" it starts to paint a picture. Nintendo's not getting very much help from 3rd party developers, so they'd mostly have to depend on their own 1st games to adjust their image, if they even want to. To be honest, I can't remember the last new IP from Nintendo that had a noticeably different tone then the usual games they pump out. Monolith Soft's upcoming title is the only game I can see coming from Nintendo that breaks that mold. If anything else is coming, I see no talk of it, not even a passing mention. Now, the Playstation and Xbox also get their own reputations for the games they get too. I know that a lot of my friends that played Xbox usually talked Halo and upcoming FPS games in general. My Playstation friends would often talk about JRPGs and the more anime-esque games. Nintendo has really separated itself from the other competitors. The Wii U opens up the door for much more unique experiences than you can find on the Xbox One or the PS4. The Xbox One and PS4 having so many 3rd party games also means they share a lot of games, so the Wii U has a plenty of potential being the only one of its kind. The issue is that they're not really drawing in those people; they're not interested enough in what's coming out for the Wii U: the usual Nintendo games. You see, Nintendo is nowhere close to being in danger of falling out of the race, but they're certainly not doing as well as they could, and I think that's largely due to their image. An image that I doubt they can change with their own 1st party games. Playstation and Xbox are fighting over the same people. Nintendo is in a category of their own, along with their very own audience, it's just not nearly as big as they would like it to be.

Because the sun is too bright and hurts my eyes. Yep, sunglasses is all I got, but to be fair I do wear them pretty much every time I have to drive somewhere during the day if it's not raining. It's become sort of like routine actually.

movies/tv What anime are you currently watching?
Mutemutt replied to AmaraEveinson's topic in Media Discussion
ALDNOAH.ZERO Definitely my favorite right now. That cliff hanger of the first season really got me, but surprise it's back already. It's kind of a side note, but it's got a really nice ending song too. I wish mechas came around more often... I also started watching Fate/Stay Night recently. It's pretty good. The animation work is amazing as usual, I suppose. Soon I'll finally be one of the cool kids doing that whole Unlimited Blade Works chant -
Ah, The Legend of Zelda, one of my childhood favorites. It's definitely one of those franchises that always, always, always catches my attention. It's sort of unfortunate though, that I've mostly settled on just watching playthroughs of the recent games. Sure, the overall story and feel of the characters has always been the main draw of the series for me, but watching someone else play the game just isn't the same. If only had more cash to toss around... Anyway, I don't have much love for any of the 2d games, with four swords adventure being the only exception. I absolutely love offline multiplayer, that's the number one piece of gaming history I'll miss. I think the 3d games really captured that feeling of a big open world to explore. Plenty of people to talk to, barging into houses and breaking their pottery, galloping across wide open plains from dawn till dusk: that sense of adventure. It's that reason that my favorite Zelda game is still Wind Waker. Sure 90% of the world was ocean, but there were so many islands out there and all the beasties you'd find throughout the sea, really made exploration exciting. Just hearing that sailing tune sends me back (Ocean). The different people you meet along the way, the many monsters that rise from the depths at night and the towering dungeons you had to traverse; the game just made all the right moves. I'm not really sure how Skyward Sword fares when it comes to actual size of the world map, but it definitely felt smaller since there was a lack of many cities and such. To be honest, if I were to call one series, one name as the symbol of the adventure genre, the example of everything and adventure game can and should be; I'd say The Legend of Zelda.

gaming Is the home console business viable for Nintendo?
Mutemutt replied to CastletonSnob's topic in Media Discussion
Oh right forgot to post about the main topic. Oops The Wii U certainly did start out flopping around, but it seems like they've found their footing. Even if they never quite catch up to the other consoles, I'm pretty sure they'll stay in the game for the rest of this generation without a problem. On the flip side, you could say that "Microsoft and Sony don't need a big ip list because they have plenty of 3rd party developers that will pay them to use the console which also helps sell the console to consumers. Nintendo has to maintain a large 1st party offering because they get barely any 3rd party support". Whether they need it or not is mostly irrelevant. It's about whether they have it or not, because 3rd party support is pretty much always only ever a boon. Well, none of those are 3rd party, but I love Monolith Soft's previous works; Xenoblade Chronicles X is the one Wii U game that I want to have. -
gaming What new genre could Nintendo Tackle?
Mutemutt replied to CastletonSnob's topic in Media Discussion
Well, I wouldn't mind if they tried a more traditional stab at a fighting game, but this is Nintendo we're talking about. I can't really think of anything... maybe puzzle. No wait, I remember there being a pokemon puzzle game. -
All aboard the hype train!!! And maybe it was just me, but I was getting a lot of Catherine vibes from the art style and transitions and such. Still, looks cool.
