Taroop, you scared me. I tried to post my comment that literally took about 15 minutes to write and got an error. Thankfully, I copypasta my own stuff. So here goes.
Ok, here comes my rant.
Dubstep is very mediocre. I don't despise dubstep. What I despise are the drops.
Dubstep drops are the very epitome of the decline of music.
Let's analyze a drop. It includes:
Very loud bass
Lots of mechanical sounds
Some rhythm in how the sounds are played out.
Those are pretty much facts, unless you're talking about dubstep from other planets or such. I could frame out my argument for the superiority of melody over bass, but instead I'll just say that melodies are the catchy part of the music, what people enjoy, and when you get a song stuck in your head, you're not remembering the bass. Most people don't vividly remember songs because the bass was good. I could be making assumptions, but they are very educated based on people I know, including people who like dubstep.
Consider one of the most popular songs of dubstep, Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites. I don't know about most people, but the part that stands out to me is the "nice sprites" portion, the melody that appears at the beginning of the song. That melody (IMHO) is gold. I have had that melody stuck in my head for ages. But the drop? I don't remember that at all. It is neither memorable nor exciting to recall.
To further explain my dislike for drops, I would have to go into what makes a song "good," but I'll settle for just a couple small arguments. We can all agree that music has changed throughout the years, and (to my personal dismay) Classical is seen as music for old people and hippies and such. There are a couple of factors that appear in every widely accepted "good" song across the years. Beethoven's Ninth, for example. Anyone and their mother knows the opening MELODY to that, partly because it's so catchy. Fastforward a crapload of years. Michael Jackson's Thriller was popular because everyone remembers the MELODY. Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody can be considered Melodic genius. Modern day, we have Adele topping the charts because of her awesome voice and, you guessed it, the melody. In short, we can't deny that the melody of a song has an extremely important role in how good it is. Considering dubstep is known for the drops, LACK of melody, I really don't believe it should be considered on the same scale.
As much as people will say that Bass is the foundation to a song and thus much more important, it doesn't work to compare music to the structure of a building. In fact, even if it did, we can all agree that we recognize structures such as the Statue of Liberty by the top, and not the base. The structure of a song is much more coherent to the foundation of a structure, but that's another argument completely unrelated. The most important thing to remember when listening to dustep and more importantly drops is that you're really just getting excitement from really loud bass. In that case, I'd advise you to listen to songs that only have drops and no melodies. You can't really enjoy that stuff because there's nothing to hold on to. As a Youtube commenter once said, "This drop sounds like transformer sex." And yeah, I don't really want to listen to clanky robots for my music.
/endrant. I could write an essay on this based on my emotions alone. I really could.
