  1. I used to listen to it regularly when I lived in Las Vegas. It was broadcast from just over the hill (in Pahrump, NV I think) so I had front row seats, so to speak. I liked it a lot because I was into all that paranormal and unexplained stuff. It was interesting and definitely better than the usual radio schlock. I remember driving by Art Bell’s house once when I was out that way; not sure why exactly. I mean, it was just a radio host's house, who cares? Good radio show though.
  2. I was filmed as part of a commercial for my workplace back in 2016 but I never saw the finished commercial and I don’t even know if it ever aired. I’m probably on someone’s cutting room floor somewhere.
  3. The lightsabers in Star Wars are revolutionary. There was never a sound like that before; something that changes according to how the saber is moved, and yet uniform and steady. Beautiful. The Acklay in Attack of the Clones is pretty cool sounding too.
  4. From Up On Poppy Hill (2011) My favorite ‘slice of life’ Ghibli movie, with one of my favorite characters (Umi Matsuzaki) with an incredible dub by Sarah Bolger. I love this movie; it makes me happy and calm when life is in turmoil. I’ve seen it dozens of times and I’ll see it dozens more. Barbie: Princess and the Pauper (2004) One of my top three or four Barbie movies. In every way this is a perfect movie and it pains me that most people would write it off because it’s ‘just a cartoon for little girls’ (sounds familiar, doesn’t it, my good ponies?) It has an amazing script, great direction, talented voice actors, memorable songs, a beautiful score, and overall it’s a freaking classic! I was so blown away by this that I was walking on air after watching it. This is the fourth Barbie movie made in the ‘modern era’ (not counting the two Barbie movies from the ‘80s) and the cast and crew were at the top of their game. The Guns of Navarone (1961) A solid WW2 action movie starring Gregory Peck, David Niven and Anthony Quinn. Written by Alistair MacLean, who brought us Where Eagles Dare, this is another adventure featuring a group of specialists infiltrating enemy territory on a secret mission. In this case the mission is to destroy two massive German guns guarding shipping lanes in the Greek islands before they can take out a convoy of American rescue ships. It’s very good; maybe a tad over long (and occasionally short on heroic conduct by the good guys), but engrossing and worth the ride.
  5. I just finished watching Reincarnated as a Sword and it was really good. It's wide open for another season and I can't wait. great sword and sorcery kind of show. Nicely done.
  6. In many cases I think it’s simply convenient to replace text with graphics (as in the second two sets of examples) and save a lot of translation. A picture is worth a thousand words, and in this case one graphic is worth dozens of different translations. The translation of ‘Baka’ to ‘Bug off’ is simply a subtitle for English-speaking audiences. Subs are a part of life and for international audiences they’re necessary. I may be wrong, but ‘Bug off’ may not be the best translation for ‘Baka’ in that scene from Ponyo. But languages can’t always be translated precisely so a degree of creative license must be used. In most cases, as long as the general idea comes across, it’s fine, and I have no problem with it.
  7. I’ve been told that Dune Part 2 is really good, so I took a look at Dune Part 1 to get up to speed on the story. Unfortunately it really sucks, just like the original 1984 version; over-long and boring. But this is the oddity: Dune Part 1 did poorly at the box office but Dune Part 2 is a huge hit. I’m not sure what to read into that but I’ll get caught up on the sequel when I can.
  8. I’ve seen countless anime series and movies. It’s going to be nearly impossible to name all the series, but I’ll try to remember as many as I can. (In no particular order). Tsuredure Children, Akiba Maid Wars, Reincarnated as a Sword, Girls’Last tour, Drifting Dragons, Zom 100 (Bucket List of the Dead), Love, Chunibyo and Other Delusions, Girls und Panzer, Sword Art Online, Gun Gale Online, Domestic Girlfriend, Maid Sama, Rent-A-Girlfriend, Made in Abyss, School-Live, Housing Complex C, Kokoro Konnect, Cells At Work, High School of the Dead, Monthly Girls Nozaki Kun. I know there are lots more but summoning the names isn’t happening right now, so this is just a sample. My anime movie list is far longer than the series list.
  9. Akiba Maid Wars. This is one of those lovely anime series that is just too weird to be true, and that’s why I love it. Only the Japanese can create such a glorious off-the-wall curiosity as this. I salute them. I’ve also been enjoying Reincarnated as a Sword, another anime. Not as outrageous as Akiba Maid Wars but very enjoyable.
  10. As a rule I don’t enjoy seeing myself in pictures or videos. I don’t make a point of being in front of camera unless there’s a good reason for it. It’s surprising just how often I actually have been in front of cameras. I find it’s much more bearable if I never actually see the photographic result.
  11. Since we're talkin' steak, we'd better make it a nice red, please.
  12. Most often I feel like I’m about 13, mentally and emotionally. But today I feel like I’m 108, with one foot in the grave.
  13. I imagine they’re comparable to any animal of similar breed; some are smarter than others. Pathology isn’t necessarily a contributing factor. But in my personal experience, having cared for both ponies and horses in a former job long ago, I’d say ponies are more mischievous and cunning verses horses, which are seemingly more staid, giving them the appearance of greater self-control and intelligence. Horses can be taught whereas I found ponies very difficult to train on any level. It’s like unruly children compared with mature adults.
  14. In my previous post in this thread I mentioned wanting to name my daughter Olivia, but went with Cassandra instead. But since then I’ve had another daughter and I’m happy to say her name is Olivia Rose (her last name will remain a royal secret). Her pony name is Princess Aria Silversong…in case you were wondering what her pony name was.
  15. I have a lot of blues and some whites but lately there seems to be a lot of black. For some reason most t-shirts (which are a staple of my casual wardrobe) seem to be black these days. I try to get as much variation as I can but the options are often limited.
  16. I’ve done laser tag and always enjoyed it. But paintballing is another matter. I’ve never done it because I could never find anyone interested in doing it with me. In any case I imagine it would take a lot of equipment and protective gear to make it workable. I’d love to try it though.
  17. I would think of it as a celebratory sort of thing so most of my songs would be upbeat, like Augie’s Great Municiple Band from The Phantom Menace, Beethoven’s Ode To Joy, and maybe Clair de Lune just for a calm moment between the more rousing beats. There’s a nice Anton Diabelli Mass that would be nice but of the seven he’s written it’s impossible to find the correct one anywhere online so I can’t give the specific name or even an excerpt. Maybe I’d finish the whole thing off with the Twin Sunset music from Star Wars; it’s hard to beat for pure sweeping beauty.
  18. I'll be waiting at the table,. (Mind if I look at an appetizer menu and wine list while we're at it?)
  19. I try to go every week if I can. If I can't, I stream a live Mass on TV. It's best to be there in person but streaming is better than nothing.
  20. I already posted here about the time I whacked my head on the stump of a stalactite, but there was another time I remember from when I was about four years old. I fell down a gravel embankment and got deep cuts on my elbows and knees. I had blood streaming down my arms and legs and it was really nasty looking; it scared the living crap out of my parents. I still have a scar on one of my elbows from it, but I think my parents suffered the most.
  21. “They say, whoever dies with the most toys, wins. So…what’d I win?" OR “The joke is over, you can all fight over my stuff now.”
  22. I would love to eat them! *Tucks bib in collar* Get cookin' Roostah!
  23. I just bought a little cordless vacuum for my office and a keen pair of night vision binoculars. I had a gift card for the latter so I scratched a long-standing itch to get a pair.
  24. I’d pretend I didn’t hear this person and vacate the area asap. If they persisted I’d continue to feign poor hearing and subtly speed up my retreat. In most situations like this I find it’s best to simply defuse the matter by walking away and not giving them any reason to persist further or react to any response.
  25. I had a piece of avocado toast. Basically egg salad with mashed avocados, onions and a little mustard mixed in, served on sourdough toast (which I opted over multi-grain toast). It may seem simple but it was so good my soul felt like it was tugging at its moorings to leave my body for the heavenly places. Sorry, no photo here, it didn’t last long enough for me to get my camera on. Next up: Tiramasu brownies.
