Fluttershy is a shy pegasus who is kind, cute, soft-spoken, and has a lot of fears...... At least her default persona is. Since the very 1st season, it's been hinted that Fluttershy has a split-personality, a darker side of her who's more aggressive, cynical, and manipulative. A side of her nopony wants to trigger. So which is more fun to watch, normal Fluttershy, or crazy Fluttershy?

There is no split personality. She just has many faces and what face she shows changes based on situation and who she's talking to. Just like anyone else.

I'm not fond of people who are overly shy but neither do I care for when she became an asshole because of Iron Will. She's honestly never shown me a side of her that I can like in any capacity. She feels like she's still in the process of becoming a better person but she never goes anywhere.

When she learns to not be so weak-willed I might start liking her more.

There are more that those two aspects shown, but I voted for timid and shy.

I prefer her Whitman-esque reserved nature as displayed in Keep Calm and Flutter On, and Stare Master. I do not like the overly emphasized fear that gets shoehorned like with Magic Duel. Fluttershy should be apprehensive ... not afraid. There is a world of difference.

Her 'rage' moments are fine with me though. They provide situational comedy, and a lot can be said about how she may bottle up emotions for the good of others (though to her detriment). That is called subtle depth.

Iron Will opened a can of worms, but they were already sitting on Flutter's shelf. How it was resolved when she found balance in standing her ground ... firm but polite ... is how I love to see her.

I seem to get the feeling that Fluttershy used to work for a villain when she was younger. Like, her possibily misserable fillyhood caused by a dysfunctional family may have driven her to a life of evil when she got a little older. Lets say, a Cloudsdale rescue squad comes and returns Fluttershy to Cloudsdale, Fluttershy, whose family in my head cannon are a bunch of cloudsdale circus preformers, wanted to stay as far away from her family as she could, as the animals were the closest she ever had to one.

Having that brief moment of happiness taken away from her could've really hurt her emotionaly. Eventually, her family gets a job offer from Fillydelphia, and thus she and her family move there. Knowing she'll probably never see animals again, Fluttershy begins to doubt the importance of her cutie mark, the destiny she would prepare her entire life for. Untill a strange shadowy figure tells her that she doesn't have to listen to what some 2-sided flank tattoo tells her, and that she can do whatever she wants. Fluttershy makes a contract with this shadowy being as it gives her supernatural powers (which would explain Fluttershy's Stare) and teaches her combat. Fluttershy then joins 4 other teenage ponies who doubt the importance of their cutie marks. As they rebel against their special talents and Fluttershy becomes the leader of a gang of thieving punks known as the Mare 5.

As Fluttershy spends more time with her shadowy master, and the Mare 5, she becomes increasingly defiant, and cynical, slowly losing her soft spoken voice and ignoring her cutie mark. As the Mare 5 quickly falls appart, Fluttershy becomes even more corrupted by her powers, seeming almost possessed. Her and her master then take it to Canterlot where they would kill Celestia, steal the Elements of Harmony, wipe out all life of the entire world, and rebuild it in their own image. Fluttershy's master quickly betrays her and tosses her to the Everfree forest. Celestia reveals to be alive and takes back the EoH. Enraged, Fluttershy snaps at the animals, including a rabbit who would later be known as Angel, as they hide in fear. Suddenly, Fluttershy realized where she went wrong, and remembered what it was like to have happiness, and to keep that happiness, she needed to change, so she moved to Ponyville where she could be comfortable with the animals, and makes a vow to not use her powers and avoid as much social contract as possible to keep others safe. But the personality of the pony she used to be never left her psyche.

This would explain why Fluttershy called Pinkie and Rarity's life goals "pointless persuits". Come to think of it, it would also explain why she was the only one willing to reform Discord, because she was once a villain herself. I also feel that Iron Will was hired by Fluttershy's old shadowy master to subtly re-awaken the heartless monster inside of her. But Fluttershy realized she was reverting to her old ways, and stood up to Iron Will, unaware of what was going on behind the scenes. If they can do something like this, then it could add some incredible depth to Fluttershy's character.

I voted for the first one, as it seems more fitting for her character.

I basically agree with Discordian though. I feel that I would like Fluttershy more if she wasn't as shy and timid as she is, since most episodes about her focus on that and yet she doesn't change by the next episode.

Actually, I've noticed that Fluttershy has been mostly less shy than in previous seasons. But you have a point. Going from Bats! to Filli Vanilli was just a step down for her. FV just felt like a generic Fluttershy episode, not something creative, unique, or something that revealed more about her Character.

I would really like to see Fluttershy's "inner demon" be explored more in Season 5. Putting Your Hoof Down showed us what she's capable of in her crazy state, so it would be a perfect way to learn more about why she has this repressed attitude. Hell, if they can, they could throw in a reference to one of Noire's catchphrases in Fire Emblem: Awakening and have Fluttershy shout "BLOOD AND THUNDER!"

Flutterbitch is plot-hole inducing at best.  If Fluttershy were some angry, manipulative bitch, I doubt she'd be able to use her rainbow power.  Equestria would be ****ed if we got Flutterbitch again, considering of how we got an Aztec asshole who ALMOST BURNED UP A FRIGGIN' ECOSYSTEM and is not even HALF as powerful as Tirek!

i think that the bad side of fluttershy is an important part of her character, just like us humans have strenghts and weaknesses and sometimes, we also get mad if things dont go our way.

when done correctly, angry fluttershy is the funniest thing in the show,as seen in the S1 finale, because its understandable for us as an audience that she acts this way.

however,in "putting your hoof down",it felt kinda wrong and out of character to me(but only a bit)

There's more to Fluttershy than just those two options. I mean. She can be brave / courageous when she needs or wants to. Like when someone picks on/hurts her friends. It's not really fair to have just those two options.

She doesn't have a split personality really. She's just being herself. A split personality would imply she has no control over her alternate personality. Sure you could use the Iron Will episode as proof of that, but that's not really true. She was influenced by his actions and teachings. She didnt' s uccumb to it under her own will. It was Iron Wills fault that she ended up being what she was...not hers. But after realizing what she was doing, was hurting  ponies...She became sad and reclusive and locked herself in her cottage, calling herself a monster. Until her friends showed her that you need to know when and how to use assertiveness.

Also, cynical and manipulative? How is she either of those things?I only noticed her being cynical when she was discorded, and a little bit when she was taking under Iron Wills teachings..Being Cynical is more or less being negative/pessimistic about things...

I've never seen her as "Manipulative" as far as I can remember anyways. She's never influenced others for personal gain. Other than "The Stare" but she uses that to control disobedient animals, and she only uses it if she REALLY needs to.

Crazy? Yea, she went crazy during Grand Galloping Gala, but that was just one episode and for like 5 minutes. I haven't seen her crazy like that since. There might be a scene in another episode, but I can't recall it.

In short. there's a bunch of emotions, personality traits and  quirks that make Fluttershy, well...Fluttershy. She's a complex character.

In the Crystal Empire part 1, Fluttershy was fed up with the Crystal Ponies that she was about to smack them before stopping herself. And she used her manipulative tactics to reform Discord. Plus, where did The Stare come from? Is it powered by Anger? We also see her threaten Twilight in Magic Duel. And there are subtle cues in Griffon the Brush Off and Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3 to show what she may really be feeling. And Power Ponies had her litteraly Hulk out. With all this, I think its pretty obvious the writers are foreshadowing something about her.
