Subbed all the way. I don't mind reading, even if I miss a line every now and then. The problem with subs is that the voice acting doesn't feel as genuine as the original. Sometimes, the dub won't even fit the character at all. Part of it is due to the fact that they need to re-do the dialogue in order to match how the mouthes are moving. Because of this, the dubbed dialogue can seem really awkward.

 

I remember trying to watch a clip of Clannad in English dub and I was like NOPE.

To be honest I don't care but prefer subbed unless the dubbed version is good I still prefer the subbed version it is better most of the time.

I usually stick with the subs. I guess it just seems the most natural most of the time. I will say this though, when the dub is good, the dub is really good. I'd gladly watch a show over again if the dub sounds amazing (even though you get so used to the Japanese voice over, it might feel a bit unnatural; still, that kind of situation is bound to happen when there's a change in voice actors)

I prefer subbed for the most part because anime is subbed before it is dubbed (which means I can watch it sooner). There are shows, like Pokemon, which I prefer dubbed because I grew up on it dubbed. However, if a subbed show becomes difficult to follow, due to excessive talking, or it just becomes hard to follow trying to keep up on action and words, then I will rewatch in dubbed...I'm looking at you, Monogatari series....seriously, never encountered such an anime where I had to continually pause to read (and I am a fast reader too)....

I'll watch both. To me it all depends on which sounds better for the characters/show. There are some shows where I think the dub is just perfect (DBZ, School Rumble, Baccano) and others where the sub is much more suited (Azumanga Daioh, Black Butler), it just depends what sounds better, I'll always give both a try. If I watched a show as it aired then I've already seen the sub so first things I do is try the dub, if I like it great it's a whole new way of watching the show, if I don't then I know I like the sub anyway.

 

As for dubbing itself; yes, Funi are the biggest and best game in town, but they're not the only good ones. Aniplex does some good stuff, Viz are generally decent with their few big shows (even if they only use the same 5 voice actors for everything, a problem Funi always had but they're making a conscious effort to give more people a shot). Disney have done some great dubs in the past for Ghibli films (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Nausicaa being probably the best), but their last few haven't been great (but then Ghibli's output itself has been poor for quite a while).

 

One of my favourite anime is One Piece and I'm equally happy with either the dub or sub, there's some VAs in either who I think are slightly better than their counterparts, but I love both versions and think it's just all round perfect whatever way you listen to it.

 

I don't agree with folk who say they only watch it subbed because it's the "only real way". Yes, some things can be lost in translation, but it's not always to the detriment of a show and sometimes the dubs can even find clever ways around this that end up with even better results. I personally think people should always give a fair shot to both, and if you don't like one then that's cool just go with what you like.

 

Oh, and it's fun and all to bash 4Kids, but their Pokemon dub was a million times better, even if the rice balls were suddenly jelly doughnuts. At least they gave a damn about trying to make things funny and interesting and shipping the hell out of Ash and Misty.

I prefer dubbed. Considering my special needs, it's hard to process subtitles for me. I have a better chance of listening than reading, especially with very poor reading comprehension as well. I've tried reading subs before too, and it just didn't work out for me. D:

I used to only watch dubs, until one day I found an anime that I thought looked cool, however it didn't have an English dub, meaning I had little choice but to watch it with subtitles. Since then I've only watched subbed anime, though some (particularly ones I've already watched dubbed in the past, like Naruto for example) I still like to watch dubbed.

I used to prefer dubbed anime, probably because I watched Pokemon, Sailor Moon and Cardcaptors when I was growing up...but when I started watching the final Sailor Moon season in Japanese, I realized that I actually prefer subbed than dubbed. Subbed anime actually gives you that "original" feel, and the voices don't feel all too altered, and they're less annoying. I tried watching Sword Art Online dubbed in English, it gave me an opposite feeling towards the show itself than when I watched it in subbed. It actually depends on how it's dubbed.

I mostly prefer subs with the original Japanese audio. For a lot of animes, it feels like the Japanese voice actor's put a lot more feeling into the characters, though Funimation dubs are usually pretty good. Some Japanese voice actors do feel like they try too hard though. Still, I prefer them over many English voice casts.

 

Trigun is a perfect example of a great English dub.

I watched "9th Rota" (9th Company, A Russian movie about Soviet paratroops in Afghanistan).

The movie was great, good lord the dubs were god awful. Since then I've watched everything with subtitles.

I like the subs because I can know the true blue dialogue. Sometimes I'll go with dub if I think the voices are better.

I prefer the dubs since I like to watch the animations. I came to watch the show not read it,that's what we got books for. However if the subs comes out considerably earlier I will usually watch them instead. I also usually watch funny animes and I find that sometimes the jokes make no sense if they use the direct translation instead of the english equivalent.

I'm usually lazy and don't feel like reading sub titles so I watch dubbed but if the dubbed voice acting is horrid enough I will watch subbed no matter what...or if I got no choice. Really depends, some animes have amazing dubs while others...stick with the subs. Then there is the kind where it goes down to your preference.

In Japanese with subtitles is fine, I like some dubs but I've mostly watched anime subbed. I even tend to use subtitles/captions on English TV shows/movies when watching alone too, helps me pay attention more... so it's a natural transition using subs when watching something foreign like anime for me.

Dx I cant stand dubs. Its Japanese not English and I like tbe original way.The only anime I will watch the dub for is Hetalia, which I havent watched in long time, because the VAs bother to do accents.

For me, it depends on the quality of the Dub, Sub. Generally i don't like the 6 voice actors that Funi likes to hire fore every anime. I typically find myself more immersed with subs TBH.

For me, it entirely depends on which I watched first. There are some shows that have great dubbing but because I got to know the show and characters in Japanese, anything else just seems odd. Like Bleach or Soul Eater or Black Lagoon, I first saw them in English so the original seems out of place. Same holds for Highschool of the Dead, Elfen Lied and Code Geass.

it depends on the show for me sometimes i like it dubbed more than subbed cause some voices to me are more annoying especially in higher pitch case in point flcl is better dubbed than subbed unless you would love to get a migraine

I just love their voices xD I can't help it. Luffy has the most annoying one (which is bad seeing as he's the main character) But I freaking love Sanji, Zoro, Franky, and Robin's. Usopp cracks me up too. Brook's and Chopper's are meh. Idk, I feel silly xD Luffy does sound awesome when he wants to though. The voice fits him, but that doesn't make it pleasing to the ears xD
