Oh my gosh, I just read a story called According to Rarity by dog0food and it was amazing. For any of you who read Shipping Goggles thisis essentially Shipping Goggles 2.0 (With the unfortunate consequence of less Rainbowpie shipping :( ). I started out laughing and by the time I was 3/4 of the way through I couldn't control myself. And THE ENDING! I laughed so hard that my brother ran from the other side of the house because he thought that I was choking. Seriously, a must read

Mistakes of the Past

Description: "While searching for artifacts in the Ancient Castle of the Royal Pony Sisters, Twilight Sparkle accidentally releases a dark and vengeful secret of the past. Equestria faces a threat unseen before as this great force threatens to destroy not only Celestia, but everything she holds near to her as well. Can we ever truly escape the mistakes of our past?"

Thoughts: Despite the author's massive warnings, it isn't that "grimdark". Still, this is mlp so any level of violence or tragedy befalling such sweet, innocent characters is more provocative then it would otherwise be. Those who've read the likes of Cupcakes won't bat an eye, those wanting a grimdark story that doesn't go overboard about it would do well to start here. As for my whether it's good or not, it's a simple, well-worn and yet highly competent story. Nothing big or fancy here. Some stories entertain though innovation and ambition, often accepting major flaws as growing pains necessary pull their grand dreams off. Other stories entertain by sticking to the formula but execute it so damn well as to overpower any complaints about lacking originality. This story is the latter. Again, it won't blow your mind, it isn't honestly terribly interesting. But, and this is a big but, if you want to see "how it's done", look no further.

Number One Fan

Description: Eh... it's so short any plot description feels like giving the whole thing away. It's obvious from the title what it's about anyway.

Thoughts: A short but poignant tale. Do yourself a favor and read it, it sure won't take long.

Sleep-Spelling

Description: "With a magic exam coming up, Twilight has been staying up way too late and stressing herself too much. As a result, she starts casting spells in her sleep, causing all sorts of chaos. Spike, tired of being turned into random items and worried about his friend, tries to do something to help. Unfortunately, his attempts to help Twilight may end up causing more harm than good."

Thoughts: Humorous and quite charming by the end, it’s a fun little unassuming tale.

When It Rains

Description: "Rarity's search for gemstones leads her to Sweet Apple Acres, and Applejack has no problem guiding her around the orchard. But when a freak storm strikes, the two ponies must race against the tempest to find shelter. As the storm rages overhead, Applejack wrestles with the growing unrest within her heart regarding Rarity. And as events unfold, Rarity is forced to examine her own opinions and feelings towards her best friend."

Thoughts: Does the plot description make it sound entertaining? Good. You won't be disappointed.

A Dash of Apple

Description: Applejack discovers Rainbow Dash can't cook. Out of the kindness of her heart, Applejack tries to teach Rainbow Dash a few basic recipes. But what starts as a cooking lesson soon turns into a bit more than that.

Thoughts: So. Much. Flirting. Not to say that's a bad thing. It's really cute. Some may find this one boring, there isn't much conflict and it's both quite long and slow paced. But if what you want is a sweet tale about two lovers trying to establish their relationship then slow pacing just means more time to savor the beauty of it. Highlights include Pinkie Pie and Rarity who are both in only a small part of the story but are highly entertaining nonetheless. Applebloom is also fun though I was hoping she'd get a bit more mileage out of the situation. Not the best Appledash story ever but it's no slacker.

Acquiesce

Description: "Rainbow Dash has been dating Pinkie Pie for nearly a month and, in spite of Pinkie’s objections, is keeping the affair a secret from the rest of their friends. Deciding she's had enough, Pinkie Pie throws a party announcing their relationship."

Thoughts: It's kind of hard to read. Not because it's poorly written or uses obscure words or anything but just because it's painful to see RD behaving this way. This is not to say her actions aren’t understandable, it just hurts to see what she does. But that is the main conflict of the story and it's a worthwhile one for a story to be about. But that leads to a less easily dismissed problem, considering how bad what she does is the situation is resolved too easily and it's all rather anticlimactic. But obviously, since I'm writing about it in this thread, I did enjoy it. Still not entirely sold on the idea of Pinkiedash though this story made a reasonably strong case in its favor. Apart from the anticlimactic ending there's nothing wrong with it. It's well-written, making one feel sympathetic for both RD and Pinkie's positions on the whole coming-out matter and the ending does manage to be rewarding despite my pervious complaint. Not required reading or anything but recommended nonetheless.

Time for more Rule 63 ponies, everyone :'D

The 63rd Rune by Alexstraza

When a spell goes wrong, Twilight finds herself and her friends... as stallions! Will they be able to reverse the effects and return to their normal lives?

Link: http://www.fimfiction.net/story/19/The-63rd-Rune

This may at a glance look like a crappy R63 story, but the adventure, well-thought out plot and character personalities are all very well done, and the writing itself is great. I'm on chapter four as I sit recommending this, and I encourage it to anyone who is either a fan of Rule63 ponies, or is open-minded enough to give it a try ;)

I recommend Death Note: Equestria

http://www.fimfiction.net/story/1455/Death-Note%3A-Equestria

Equestria is growing, and magical savant Twilight Sparkle is disgusted by the crime and corruption this change has brought. Her life is changed forever when she discovers the Death Note, a notebook with inexplicable and deadly powers. She uses this book to pass judgement on those she deems unworthy of life, aiming to create a perfect world free of crime. But when the two Princesses put their best pony on the case, a mysterious detective known only as L, a psychological game of cat and mouse erupts between the two.

This is the fic that started me into ponyfic. A great grimdark and Death Note crossover.

Oh? I didn't honestly give the story much of a chance. What made me lose interest was seeing Celestia didn't seem surprised by Twilight's/Dusk's letter and made it sound like a solution wouldn't take long to find. So they have Celestia, the most powerful and authoritative force in Equestria, on their side- not exactly setting up long odds. Moreover, the whole appeal of the story- at least to me- is the thought of seeing the awkwardness that arises from the situation. Spending time around ponies who know what the problem is defuses any potential for hilarious awkwardness so seeing the spell didn't also affect Celestia's memory was disheartening.

I started it and got about halfway through a few weeks ago but quit when it got too depressing for me. Being a major Death Note nut I wanted to see how it played out , and I was intrigued by a few details (Ryuk ditching Light to give the note to Twilight fits well considering both their names and personalities, and L's identity made WAY too much sense) but over time watching Twilight becoming Kira became too much for me. I would recommend it to others though.

To each their own :3 Those elements all make sense, but I enjoyed the story thoroughly. Sometimes having a relatively simple storyline is good. The one and only big problem I had with the story was the random OctaviaXBlitz/Rainbow shipping. It seemed a bit thrown in.

I also recommend a Rarity fanfic called Loss. Now My Little Dashie made me cry a little but this one made me ball all over the place. The only thing I well say is Rarity had a cardiac problem. Why do I recommend it, it is really well written and the way the mane 6 and spike ract to the problem is so accurate, I recommend this one making it my new favorite Fanfic

I would like to recommend a fic called Magnetism, by Souldin on Fimfiction. It's a Flutterdash fic where they become stuck together with magic.Given that Fluttershy has a crush on Rainbow hilarity and awkwardness ensues although Dash is oblivious to the awkwardness. Meanwhile Angel cannot understand the situation and jumps to the conclusion that Dash has moved in to boss Fluttershy around, mooch off of her and live in the lap of luxury. This being his job, he sets out to make Dash's life a living hell, and she must wage war on Angel without Fluttershy picking up on any of it.

Flutterdash isn't my OTP, but this fic makes it very enjoyable. Has comedy, adorableness and everything I like in a shipfic. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did

The Keepers of Discord by Hoopy McGee

When Discord's statue is given caretakers due to Celestia feeling guilty for the Draconequus being conscious inside his stone prison, he treats it as nothing but torture. As time passes, he begins to realize the true nature of the universe of which he is in. Order cannot exist without chaos, and chaos cannot exist without order.

Green

Description: Rarity and Fluttershy have been friends for years, and every week they go to the spa. But after every trip, Rarity finds herself growing greener with envy over Fluttershy's beauty and grace; if not something more than just envy... And what may happen, if she finds out Fluttershy feels the same way about her?

I really love this story. The characters just feel so real, as if this could really happen.

Background pony is another one of my favorites, what really bugs me though is that Lyra talks like a guy. That's why I chose to post Green instead.

It's human, against some of the most famous villains in the fandom. Currently there are Pinkamena, Slender pony, and Rainbow Factory. Quite a good read if you want to lose your sides :P

SCP crossover, the flashback part is kinda weird, but the author did an excellent job bringing out the worst from the SCPs

Stories in the Stone: Luna's Royal Guard

Definitely my new favorite fanfiction.

Everything about it is amazing! The characters, the story, the battles, the humor, The only thing that isn't amazing is the grammar... : P

But it doesn't even matter, I can ignore it.

And it's a pretty damn long story. Like, large novel length.

Another good one:

DEATH BATTLE: Equestria

It's death battle, but with characters from My little pony.

The research is really well done too : P

Royal Pains
Description: "Blueblood needs to learn some humility. With the help of Celestia and a few 'friends' he will learn his lesson, whether he wants to or not."
Thoughts: Kinda odd that description leaves out the whole alternate universe-rule 63 thing the story has going on. Royal Pains constantly shifts back between two parallel realities which are different in that everyone is the opposite gender yet similar in that events nevertheless closely mirror each other. (Note, however, that the story doesn't involve any of the main six or their male counterparts- they exist but are simply not the ones this story is about.) On the other hand, for the first four chapters the above description is all that's really relevant as the universes don't interact and combine to tell only one story so for the longest time the alternate gender swapped reality thing feels like a gimmick. Chapter five, thankfully, proves it's a part of the story for good reason and further shows that keeping the universes separate for so long to have been done for the sake of building character relationships up to put them in the right place for when the alternate realities do come into play.

Now, as for the story itself, it's terrfic. What shines about it is believable character action such that even the minor characters are well rounded- like they're real ponies going through real lives. There is one part where Spear/Lance's attitude shifts a little too fast but it's easy enough to go along with. Most impressive of this is that they get Blueblood/belle just right such that he/she's obnoxious and arrogant without being overbearing about it (he/she's annoying to the characters, not the reader) and responds to his/her situation in ways that satisfying develop his/her character. Here's what most important of all: I felt sorry for him/her. No, seriously. Royal Pains makes this a sympathetic character while remaining true to that character. That's some impressive writing skills. There's also one minor character added later in the story that seems arbitrary at first but turns out to be ingenious. And now for the reason that despite how much I enjoyed it I have to admit having some difficulty recommending it- it's not finished and may never be. It's been ages since the last update so I've honestly little hope of a chapter six. Still, what's here is highly entertaining and it deserves to be appreciated complete or not. *

* The story is dead. Don't waste your time.

Thicker Than Water
Description: "Rainbow Dash faces her preliminary try outs for the Wonderbolts. No problem, until she receives several unexpected visitors that bring up an unwanted past and unsure future."
Thoughts: This one is all about explaining RD's personality and it does so rather brilliantly.

The Stranger
Description: In an old west pony town, trouble is ahoof.
Thoughts: A brief yet satisfying story about what Big Mac is really like behind that stoic exterior.

There was one called 'To my Dearest' (I think) that got featured on Equestria Daily. I really liked that one. It had Pinkie become a Sky Pirate :)

Simply Rarity
Description: "What does generosity mean to a Unicorn who's had everything and nothing?"
Note: This is Rarity's backstory
Thoughts: I was crying by the end.

Blood Sweat and Tears
Description: "What does it take for Applejack to realize her dreams, and what is the price that must be paid for them?"
Note: This is Applejack's backstory
Thoughts: Less tragic than Simply Rarity but no less well written. A tale of profound theme that anyone would do well to read.

Rarity's Rodeo
Description/Thoughts: Remember during Look Before You Sleep when Applejack dared Rarity to enter the next rodeo that comes to town? You want to see that scenario play out? Of course you do. So read this.

Note: I'm throwing these three together because they're best read in this order. They can also be read individually though in the case of Rarity's Rodeo doing so means being deprived of backstory that is useful for understanding why things end up the way they do and in particular doing so means missing one of the most profound character moments I've ever seen. Each one is fantastic, put them together and they're sublime. How peculiar that fanfic writers of all people keep managing to make my Greatest Works of Fiction Ever list.
