Is There Any Police Force In Equestria?

An Unknown Pony.

I think that the royal guards kinda do double duty on this but I don't think it's ever been stated as there ever being a police force....

Cause if there was, they must have been all at pony Joe,s donut shop during al these disasters that Twilight has had to fix

I think policing falls under the jurisdiction of the royal guards, at least they're the only form of law enforcement we've seen in Equestria to any extant.

Well there is that one sheriff in Dodge Junction I guess. Or was it Appleloosa? I guess they probably both have a sheriff.

I believe the comics have shown Manehattan to have a police force. So if you include the comics .... yes. I know some will point to A Glass of Water, but I'm not sure that counts ... cause Discord went all sorts of pop culture nutzen in that one :P

I don't think that there is police in Equestria. When you look at the canon, you will notice that the Royal Guard is only there for security reasons. Maybe it has a militia. No idea.

Equstria doesn't seem like the kind of place that requires much policing. And yet even the royal guards are pretty useless against any major threat to the kingdom. I guess security isn't a big concern in a country that has had a millennium of peace.

It's very likely they do, but also likely they go about it in a different manner. Mainly because they don't seem to draw any real distinction between their military and their law enforcement.

The Guard seems to be broken up into a regular Guard for Canterlot, and a Royal Guard. Possibly the Royal Guard further subdivided into Princess Celestia's and Princess Luna's personal guard. They made a point of Shining Armor being the Captain of the *Royal* Guard, not the Day Guard or the Night Guard, and not necessarily the highest ranker of the Guard in general. The Crystal Empire has it's own Crystal Guards that appear to allow transfers from the Canterlot Guard. Manehattan has a more recognizable police force. And we've not seen any evidence of a guard or police presence in Ponyville at all.

If I was to guess, we're dealing with a lopsided hierarchal system here. With the Guard acting much like Canada's RCMP: They're the federal police, and there *may* be regional and local police, but if there isn't, the Guard has that responsibility.

With the Friendship League recently borne I don't think it really matters. Princess Twilight and Co. will be able to fix any problems that may arise in the land.

First off, Ponyville does not need a police force.

Canterlot has the royal guard so they do not need one.

We have seen very limited portrayals of the other cities in canon.  I would figure some of the larger cities would have them.

There are Police at the end of SHED.MOV if that counts.

Ahhhhh.... No

honestly I don't believe they need a police force, the criminals would be too scared of being sent to the moon where parole only comes once every thousand years ;)

I think the larger areas, like Manehatten and Canterlot Castle, have their own police-like force. However smaller places, like Appleloosa and Ponyille, might have only one or two if any police force units. Depends on the size of the place, much like in real life where the police force might be bigger or smaller depending on how numerous the populace is

Hi .  This thread seems to pertain specifically to the cartoon so I'm moving it to show discussion.  And while I'm here, I think I'll add that the word "police" may not exist in Equestria.  But they certainly have rules, laws, and guards to enforce them.  Besides the Royal Guard, don't forget the guards under Mayor Mare's command in the series opener who tried to apprehend Nightmare Moon.

Police like we think of them are a 19th century invention.  (Sir Robert Peel, it is why British cops are sometimes called "Peelers") The town watch, palace guards, etc were more like our National Guard.  That is, more civil defense & keep the peace than crime solving.  Pre 19th century, you were the victim of a crime, YOU had to solve it.  This is why Grand Juries were invented, to help Joe Citizen in his efforts & to make sure there was enough evidence to proceed.  Cities having professional lawyers to prosecute cases is a late 19th century idea.  Previously, it was just given to any lawyer that wanted to do it.  Worked about as well as you might imagine.

Manehatten having cops doesn't surprise me, they seem to be about 50-100 years ahead of Ponyville.  I've said it elsewhere, something weird is going on w tech levels in Equestria.

I feel like...there's a huge gap in technology and knowledge between different areas of Equestria so the need for police forces vary. I'm pretty sure there is a need for a police force in a big city like Manehattan, though for smaller areas like Ponyville that's relatively peaceful, there's not much of a need.

So..Most Of You Think Royal Guards/Guards Do The Work Of Police Officers/No Need Police Officers In Equestrias,Then Some said there were police officers in Manehattan,I Think The Police Only Work In Manehattan Cause Ponyville and Manehattan have a big difference in technology and Era.

I'll bet that even if there are police officers in Equestria, none of them are mares. Seems only stallions have the chops for security work as far as I've seen anyway.

F*** The Royal Guard!
