The show then and now. What's different?

Well, if you've already agreed that they sacrifice creativity and the theme of non-violence to make flashy battles a thing, then I guess there isn't much to argue about anyway.

I.... didn't say that?

It's really not a big deal.... Seriously, there's no reason to insult people for liking different things, or to be aggressive about it. Can't we just like different things? There are lots of people who like one season or another more, and I think everyone should just enjoy whatever episodes make them happiest. This isn't a battle, and if it were to be it'd be an awfully silly one.

I realize I'm not a mod here, but I think it's pretty clear that Dulset had never intended to be offensive or insulting. Maybe it'd be best to just tell him why his posts are bothersome?

On topic, I think I can cite Testin' as an example of the show being more complex in its lessons.

Season 1 is special because that was where the show surprised me by actually being good.  It's the season where we think we have an idea about who Pinkie Pie is, and then we see Party of One.  We get unexpectedly great character history in The Cutie Mark Chronicles.  It's the season where you think The Laughter Song and Evil Enchantress are the kind of songs that are going to be in the show, and then we get hit over the head with Winter Wrap Up.  And nowhere after the Nightmare Moon arc is there much of any action or lasers.  It didn't need it.

Don't get me wrong, season 4 has some great episodes like Flight to the Finish and Pinkie Pride.  However, by this point, the characters are more established and there's less room to be surprising.  It doesn't feel..daring.  And I feel like sometimes they're merely using the characters rather than developing them further.  But I'm also being overly critical of season 4.  Overall, it's not bad by any means.  And I don't think it has that many laserific scenes.  Just discount the premier and finale.  After that, I think the only thing you have left really is Three's a Crowd and Power Ponies (and as far as action goes, I'm purposely pretending that Daring Don't never happened).

Here's how I see it.  I think most people were probably like me and watched the show in episode order.  Season 1 is likely where we all became Bronies.  That's something no other season will be able to top.

Well except for season 2, what with giving history to the world, incredible richness to the characters, and one of the best villains in fiction ;)

I for one think that in 4 seasons, the show hasn't changed a lot.

Except new characters, new places, the mane 6 "growing up" etc. (which is normal for a show), I don't see many differences regarding the morals, the plots, the fights (there have been many fights in season 1 too), the amount of "dark" episodes (every season has its darker episodes: season 1: Bridle Gossip, season 2: Putting your Hoof Down, season 4: Castle Mane-ia etc.). There're maybe more adventurous episodes, but not that much.

Actually, I've always been surprised on how constant the quality of this show is, it's hasn't improved, nor regressed.

Season 2 was good, but you know what they say, you'll always remember your first.

For one thing the characters have certainly changed, both for better and for worse.  On one hand, Rainbow Dash isn't as much an egomaniac as she was in the first season, but on the other hand, Pinkie Pie is a bit more of a caricature of her earlier self, Pinkie Pride excepted.

I think that some of the differences come from the fact that the first season is about establishing the world and the characters and the later seasons are about playing with what was already built.  You couldn't have, for instance, the Applejack/Rarity interplay in episodes like Simple Ways or Trade Ya without establishing their relationship early on.

And yet for some ungodly reason they just keep trying... Flight to the Finish, Pinkie Pride, Filli Vanilli, hey let's just keep giving our well-establisted characters brand new traits they've never shown before when they absolutely should have by now :P

I fail to see the new traits in any of these that contradict what was established before.  Except, well, Pinkie's insensitive jerkishness in Filli Vanilli...

Twilight didn't have wings and wasn't a princess... Twilight now has wings and wasn't a princess, oh and has a big castle.

Really, that's all I got. The show's stayed more or less the same in terms of quality. The only other thing I got is more ways to present the morals.

Also, the characters have developed.

- Due to her almost never making mistakes or otherwise doing anything wrong anymore, Twilight no longer learns any deep or legitimate lessons, which is somewhat ironic considering the show started out with her being pretty much the only one learning deep lessons.

- Pinkie's regression in development since season 1.

- Simple plots are gone, and now it seems like the writers think that most episodes need to have some kind of gimmick to be good (at least in the eyes of bronies). For example, the return of Flutterguy being the gimmick for Filli Vanilli and breezy transformations being the gimmick for IAEBB.

- Applejack's improvement in both character and speech.

Pinkie's regression in development since season 1.

I actually liked the return of Flutterguy, because it's a great singing voice, but even I was taken back by Pinkie in that episode.  It was indefensible.  The regression of Pinkie must stop.  She shouldn't be a 1 dimensional comic relief character or a device to just further the plot.  I kinda forgot about this point, but it's irksome to say the least.  The writers need to respect the characters.

She was replaced by a changeling, which was then replaced by a mirror clone, which then probably suffered brain damage. It's the only logical explanation.
