Are we ungrateful and expecting too much from MLP?

Well in my opinion, the fans need to learn the difference between fanmade stuff and the actual show, yes the show has given us a bunch of things that we have asked for but we also need to give them a chance to express themselves and show us how good they can be without us asking more of it. I mean, they have showed us how good they can be, they created the show that we all love in the first place. i agree with you completely on this one and i feel the exact same way and to be honest, i dont have a single episode that i dislike, they are all great (including the movies)..

fans also need to be reminded of what made them love and get into the show, to begin with. Surely, it wasn't the background characters, but for the main, the good quality animation, the relateablility, the adventure, the good morals, the escapism of the series as it is. There's nothing wrong with breathing life into the background characters, but maybe we need to get back to the basics, and redefine the line between canon and fanon.

thus pleasing adults and kids alike would be difficult

Right, we got caught off guard of how good this show is all those years ago, and we love it to be more complex tham we expected, but it has defined it's standards and we have no right to expect more if we like it as it is in the first place. It's not like there are not any great pony fics if a complexand mature story is what you seek

I think that we are ungreatful. We have been expecting too much in the TV series. For example DHX decided to make the connection between Vinyl and Octavia being roommates because of our headcannons. I wonder what is next? Apple Bloom and Spike?
