There will be so many possibilties! No fear of getting put into "not possible canon", because there will be no more to contradict you. The fanfictions will go so many routes and YOU can choose any one of them to be the one you follow.

 

Its like a piece of grass. Right now if you put something on the grass, the grass will grow through it. But when the show ends, it will be like the grass starts branching out, like the multiple possible canons, instead of the one singular one.

 

Its a fountain of water spouting out so many possible canons, however dark, happy, or possible you want it to be! I'm watering at the mouth just thinking about it.

When MLP gets cancelled, there will be so many fanfics that continue the show on some point or another as there are right now. People would come up with ideas like Ponyville in 10 years and stuff like that.

Not sure what's stopping you from making up your own fics now and not sure what's stopping others from telling you that it's non-canon.

 

If you make a continuing story after the last season ending it's still sits on non-canonity.

You shold not really care about canon when it comes to fan fiction. Don't like the way the giffons were portrayed in canon show?

 

Well, go write your own griffon race in alternate universe to the show then. With their own country or whatever.

 

Want Pinkie Pie to be cold blooded killer in your story? Then write it.

 

Don't like a pony being shipped with 'X' in canon? Then ship them with someone else in your story.

 

Don't like 'X' in canon ignore it and write own history of Equestria.

 

I for one think sticking too close to the canon makes your sorry boring. As long as the characters behave somewhat like their canon selves I tend to enjoy the story.

 

I don't mind out of character so much, as long as they aren't out of character all the time. Even then, I enjoyed some stories where they were OOC.

there are already many of those (Ironically, most of them are pre-S3 though), but I imagine we'll see a bigger rise of Poniville in X years in the future, or even more childern of the Mane6

Fanfictions never seemed to be halted by canon in the first place, so I imagine they may remain unchanged.

Once the shows stop, I suspect that there will be fewer new fans and so I suspect that the amount of FiM fiction will decrease. The fiction itself will be inherently limited by the amount of canon material to work from, so the more episodes we have, the more fiction 'can' be made. Not that this poses no actual numerical limit, but consider this - after the Changlings appeared, we had a huge surge in fiction that was about Changlings or involved them to a significant extent. That wouldn't have happened without that episode (almost irrespective of how good the episode was.) The same is true for some hypothetical race that will never be introduced because the show will end before they appear.
