friendship games Could Friendship Games end up spoiling the rest of Season 5?

Chronologically, the last two EGs took place in-between seasons, so I'm guessing Friendship Games is intended to be set after the Season 5 finale. But the movie is set to air on Discovery on the same month as the second half. This could be a slight problem.

Even if the actual human Twilight is the only one in the story, the trailer suggests she'll be exposed to Equestria somehow by looking through a portal, if not the same one built in front of the school. Whether this means that she, or any of the humanized Mane Six will see their ponied-selves for the first time isn't clear, but under those circumstances, I can't see the writers not divulging the status quo of a post-Season 5 setting. It would just feel out of place if Starlight Glimmer was still around trying to fuck things up.

I don't think it will be that big a spoiler if that's the case. Sure, Rainbow Rocks showed Twilight's castle. If I had seen that before finishing season 4 I guess I would probably wonder what that was all about, but it's not like it reveals what happened to the Golden Oak Library. I doubt the season 5 finale will impact the overall aesthics of Ponyville like season 4's did. If the CMCs get their cutie marks as has been rumoured, they don't have to be shown in Friendship Games.

At most I doubt anything more than the mane six and others getting out of whatever situation Starlight Glimmer puts them in will be spoiled. Yes, if anypony appears in Friendship Games, they obviously did not meet their end with Starlight Glimmer's revenge plot, but that doesn't spoil how they managed to save the day, and isn't it safe to assume the mane six will triumph in the end anyways? FiM is not a tragedy, or a horror show, or belong to any genre where it doesn't work out for the heroes when all is said and done. Even the comics don't go that far, and I don't think they would even if licensing by Hasbro didn't most likely restrict the writers at IDW from pulling anything of the sort.

I kinda doubt it, most of the time the EG films have no bearing on canon (as in it doesn't really effect it that much) so I don't expect this one to be any different. Plus if this one focuses on human Twilight then that pretty much throws out all chance of that happening.

No matter how hard I try these ponies will simply never leave me.

Didn't the show writers confirm that the movies are canon? If I recall their explanation was more or less "Twilight has the memories of this happening, but the movies by design had little bearing on her universe." So it still happened, it just didn't affect much. I remember for like a solid month after the release of the first movie every brony under the sun trying to justify not acknowledging their existence.

Honestly though, I would not be surprised if this film beared little to no connection to Equestria, or even heavily influenced it. The film is scheduled to be released around the time of episode 15, so I guess we'll wait and see. Personally I doubt they'd spoil the season like that.

When I said the films have no bearing on the canon I meant they had no real story significance, I'm aware they count as canon.

This Equestria Girls movie thus far appears to focus only the human universe.  References to the pony Equestria might be made though, Sunset Shimmer is to write regularly to Twilight (if I remember Rainbow Rocks correctly, it's been a while since I watched it).  I think we will see Sunset Shimmer writing to Twilight at the very end, and perhaps pony Twilight reading it and responding.  "Canterlot Boutique" and "Rarity Investigates!" is scheduled for 9/12 and 9/19 respectively, so it is very likely that there will be an episode break for 9/26 to show Friendship Games (it is airing on DFC).  I think after the movie, the pony world will carry on as normal in the next episode.

I agree with you there. Personally, I think of EQG like any other spinoff media such as the comics. These films expand on the lore of the series, just like any other spinoff, and are additional adventures for Twilight and Spike. However, also like any other spinoff, they can't be referenced directly by the show. The whole point is for the show to be easy to follow. All one has to do is watch the episodes in order, and no one will feel canon locked. These other series exist for fans who want something that expands on the regular episodes. In that sense, FiM is a canon that can be as simple or complex as fans want, but in order for that to work what is determined to be the primary source material, which in this case is the show, technically can't require any other series to be worked directly into it. Sure, it means we won't be seeing Sunset Shimmer in Equestria anytime soon, but that doesn't mean nopony can enjoy the films for what they're worth.

I don't think Friendship Games will spoil the rest of Season 5, the two other movies didn't spoil anything.

That's because they came out inbetween seasons. This one won't.

Who knows, maybe they anticipated the summer mid season hiatus and they'll make Friendship Games occur during mid season. Regardless, I still doubt we'll see much of Equestria this movie, as pony Twi doesn't seem to be involved having human Twi around
