Favorite villain/antagonist so far?

Discord is the best. Sombra's REALLY underrated though, he was terrifying, and one of the few villains that was pretty damn smart as well, those traps were great.

 

I never understood why people like Gilda, she seemed really one-dimensional to me. Griffons are cool, but Gilda was just dull. With Silver Spoon and Diamond Tiara it's fine because they're KIDS, but Gilda's too old to be acting like that believably.

 

Trixie's OK, I just don't like how fanon depicts her as Twilight's nemesis most of the time.

 

Flim Flam Brothers were fun. That episode's ending bugs me though. The Apples should've gave them a counter offer, kept them around. Demand far exceeds supply for cider, and all the Apples would be working less. Even if they split the profits 50/50 they'd be making more money. As it is, Applejack just condemned herself to a summer of working her ass off for people who will never be satisfied, good going there. /facepalm

 

Chrysalis was the worst villain. She practically defeated herself. Sure, it's a fine idea to attack Twilight and reveal your master plan right when she's given up and nopony believes her. Also great thinking to put leave two skilled magicians unchained in your prison with three mooks as guard. Fantastic, you've enough power to defeat Celestia, but you can't stop the Mane 6 from leaving the room to get the EoH. Brilliant, you leave all your prisoners in one room with most unsecured, don't bat an eye when one gets loose, and outright taunt her and do nothing when she says she'll use THE EXACT SAME THING THAT MADE YOU MORE POWERFUL THAN A GOD to destroy you. /rant

I like her because she's not a villain.  She's not even an antagonist.  She's more of a rival whose questionable methods put her at odds (in a very realistic way) with one of the established characters.

Also, I feel it's really time to simply cover the basis with the villain threads. Instead of having one topic for the majors and then other topics popping up here and there such as yours, Twinhead, I feel it's a lot easier to just merge them into one, and edit the OP to have a more broad poll.

 

Could we maybe have a separate thread for antagonists? I'd like to keep this thread dedicated to those who cross the villain line if possible.

Well, I think each of their villains was very unique in goals, personalities, and style.

I think Discord was my favorite though... Seriously, I love his fashion sense... and chocolate milk rain. <3

I think my second favorite is Nightmare Moon.

As for the comic's new villain, her name is official. They mention her by it on the last page of Issue #6.

Discord, because unlike the others who are more generic in design and personality, Discord is very quirky in everything he does. He is the most entertaining villain by leaps and bounds. That's why Return of Harmony is my favorite two-parter.

 

The other three certainly look pretty cool and even threatening, but they're run-of-the-mill villains that you can find anywhere.

Rather difficult considering the line between antagonist and villain is not universally defined. Everyone has their own perception for what qualifies as what.

 

For example:

Anyone can say that there are plenty of antagonists in the show (who aren't the main big four) who qualify as villains, as well. The only for sure difference between Discord, Sombra NMM and Chrysalis, to the rest of the show's antagonists, is that the big four are the biggest threat. But it doesn't inherently mean the other antagonists don't quality as villains, too. I consider Trixie a villain in Magic Duel, for example.

King Sombra is by far my favorite, if he had more screentime and dialog then he would be everything I could ever want in a MLP villain, and I guarantee that voting score would be different.

After a re-analysis of their episode, and a week or so of not-really-sure-which-villain-is-my-favourite-ness, I've actually decided that King Sombra is my favourite.

 

I think King Sombra is a borderline perfect villain. He posed by far the greatest threat to the Mane 6, and was additionally the most imposing character design for a villain. He doesn't have a back story, and he doesn't have much dialogue; that's not a bad villain, that's fear of the unknown, and the signs of a tactician. King Sombra was utterly dedicated to his goal, to the point where he was constantly on guard waiting for Cadance's defences to drop. He understands what so many antagonists don't; one must employ tactics. Don't stand in front of the crew taunting them, it makes you a target. King Sombra kept his distance the entire time, refusing to do cliché jabs at the crew and instead focused on concealing the Crystal Heart. He meant business.

 

Here's one example of how King Sombra is the most intelligent villain. The staircase leading to the nightmare door was concealed by the crystal in his chair, which could only be activated by dark magic. King Sombra built it like that because he had presumed any coming hero enemy to be only versed in the good, non-dark magic, and thus have no hope at all of reaching the Crystal Heart. He plans ahead.

 

We already learned of how fierce he was as a tyrant - cursing a whole empire for a thousand years? That's a serious villainous achievement. And then he then went on to prove his own worth how it didn't need just the entire Mane 6 to reassure the crystal ponies long enough to keep him at bay; it needed Spike, it needed Shining Armour and Cadance, and it needed an entire empire of crystal ponies before he was eventually banished. That's how mighty he was. He was truly a bad-ass.

 

There's also the fact that King Sombra is a unicorn. That's right; he's not an otherworldly being like a Draconequus or a Changeling. He's a unicorn; just like anypony else could be. The extent of his villainy is really shown by that - the hellish, demonic form that he takes surpasses all other villains because even with the glowing green eyes, red aura and pitch-black phantom clouds, he's still exactly the same race as any normal unicorn civilian. It exemplifies that anypony can become beyond evil, and I think that hits hard.

 

I could say more, but all I really wanted to state was why King Sombra is my new favourite villain. n.n

Of the show and canon-wise, Discord. No competition there in my opinion. From a concept and fanon and even the official comics* viewpoint, however, Chrysalis is REALLY interesting. It's hard to say exactly how evil she is. I mean, yeah, she's clearly enjoying overthrowing Celestia, but she's doing it to save her subjects. Ethics aside, the changelings are just plain cool. Their designs are so creepy and bug like, neigh, parasitic like. Another nice thing about the entire concept of changelings is the retcon potential. The changeling invasion seemed to have come out of nowhere just for the season 2 finale, but who knows how long this has been planned? How long have they had spies among the ranks of the ponies, feeding off of ponies love in small amounts so as not to be noticed? And Chrysalis didn't die or get reformed or anything, she and the changelings could try again anytime. I doubt they will though. Like I said, I think of her motives being more "Save mah people" rather than "Get revenge". Well, the "Saving my race" thing should probably be a higher priority anyway. Invading Canterlot and the ponies must've taken some time, and they now know how easily the ponies could best them again. Why waste the time and effort, and why risk starving your subjects?

 

Chrysalis and Discord are my all time favorites, but I think Sombra gets a bad rap just because Cadence did such a good job keeping him locked out most of the episode. And of course Nightmare Moon was a fine villain, just not one of my favorites.

 

*I haven't read most of the official comics, I just know she's in them and is still cool and I'm pretty sure she killed a nation of bunnycat things or something evil like that.

I'd have to say Discord, because he's really tricky and likes to make up puzzles and do other wierd stuff , but Trixie is a close second. I don't really know why I like Trixie a lot, maybe it's cause she's a really cool color.

discord, hands down!

and its pretty obvious why. its because as an audience, he's the one we the most enjoyment out of. he's the most fun to watch, and still has likable characteristics even as a villain. everything about discord is interesting. his voice actor is talented , his character beyond amusing, his design is very unusual, his interactions with the mane 6 and celestia are priceless.

none the other villains were built quite as well as discord, although some actually got pretty close (like chrysalis).

I would argue the line between villains and antagonists is pretty clear. Nightmare Moon wanted to engulf the entire world in darkness, Flim and Flam merely wanted to run the Apple Family out of business. Discord wanted to plunge the world into eternal chaos, Gilda simply did not like Pinkie Pie. Chrysalis wanted to drain all Equestria of it's love and take over, Diamond Tiara simply bullies Apple Bloom for not having a cuite mark.

 

Trixie is a special case, because her personality in Magic Duel is vastly different from that in Boast Busters. The Alicorn Amulet corrupts it's user, so while I too would consider Magic Duel Trixie to be a villain, she only qualifies as such because of the Alicorn Amulet. Perhaps putting her in both the antagonist poll (No Amulet) and the villains poll (With Amulet) could help? I still believe we should have two polls as comparing Chrysalis to Flim/Flam is just absurd.

Discord is popular, well designed and well acted, but he had a major weakness as a villain: he was never evil enough to be really threatening. He was a malicious prankster but despite having 1,000 years to think about how he'd get back at Celestia, he had a poor strategy and was really just out for a good time. If I can be a little philosophical about this: true evil lies not in chaos, but in excessive order. The frustration we have to repress and the illusions we have to play along with to be part of the system.

 

For this and other reasons, Chrysalis was a far more intimidating adversary than Discord. She had an excellent plan and an army of creepy followers to carry it out. Only her ego and Twilight Sparkle's insight prevented her from conquering the capitol of Equestria. And the way her story ended, she needed a follow-up much more than Discord. I hope she gets one in Season 4. The queen of the changelings is easily my favorite villain, at least in my head.

 

In my heart it is Nightmare Moon, but alas...it says a lot that she's barely ahead of a glorified OC like King Sombra. She had a great story and a great design, but much like Luna, she has a ton of potential that has barely been explored since the start of the series.

 

And finally, my favorite minor antagonists are Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon. ^^

My favorite major villain is Discord, he has that special flare that all of the other villains don't have that makes him more memorable

nightmare moon diffidently. i dont know why. i just really like nightmare moon. i guess it has something to do with me admiring the night. i like the night better than the day. i also think that the night is really pretty. and the moon is really really pretty. i can stop staring at the moon for some odd reason.

We can all agree that Discord, Chrysalis and Nightmare Moon are awesome (in that order).

 

But King Sombra is a waste of time. It just happens to exist, then leaves the place. Such a waste of potential! D:

No background story (or at least not one that was worth to watch), no awesome stuff and we see Twilight Sparkle in her lowest (except for, you know, Double Rainboom).

 

King Sombra MUST return in the 4th wall brea- mean, season, and blow the "#$% out of the whole place. With some epic Pinkie Pie stuff.
