This is some good news for 5/6 generation gamers like me. Now my brother asked me if I would buy a PS4.

How about you?

I'm a gamer of many platforms. I prefer my PC for all of the newest titles, and I don't care too much for any of the exclusives on the 8th gen consoles.

I have an N64, Game Cube, PS3, and a PS2 so I'm not sure why I would even want a PS4 except to play online with my brother who has been trying to convince me since March to get one.

But I'm building him a PC for Christmas so now I just need to convince him to buy PC games

That is pretty cool to hear it's going to emulate the first two consoles though. It's about time PS2 lovers were shown a little love. ^_^

Doesn't really make much of a difference to me. I'm getting a PS4, but really only for the upcoming Kingdom Hearts releases.

Most of the titles I loved on the PS2 were KHI and II, and I just played both of them through their fine remasters on the PS3, so no need to own them on the PS2 again... All of that aside, my PS2 still works and is sitting under my TV, still... Although not plugged in.

Are these going to be like Wii games on the Wii U, where they look terrible?

I don't own a PS4, (I game on Xbox One) but for PS4 owners, this is friggin' cool. I love that these companies are doing more and more to put value into these systems. Makes gaming better overall. With Xbox One backwards compatibility and now this, this gen of consoles is getting better and better. :)

I think they felt the backlash they received from the launch and finally realized what they must do to keep it interesting. And the emulation of old games does a console good since it shows that new systems are capable with old technology. Not capable of it is like a bodybuilder who can lift 100 lbs but not 10lbs.

I would not be happy with it.

The Ps 2 had already problems with Ps 1 games. By a few games, some cut scenes didnt load ( Worms 1 for example. ) and many of the save files had question marks on their blocks or no names at all, because the console didnt know which game they were playing. Other games like Worms Armageddon even crashed from time to time and save files got corrupted.

The Ps 3 had also cut scene problems with Ps 1 games and a few games just crashed. ( Loaded for example. ) and the few Ps 3 consoles that could also play Ps 2 games, they broke easily and ive heard, that that was the reason why many newer ps 3 consoles didnt had that function anymore.

Because the Ps 2 compatible Ps 3 consoles got defect very easy, not to mention that the console couldnt even read all Ps 2 games. ( Monopoly for example. )

Now the Ps 4 should have this function again? Im pretty sure, the Ps 4 cant play all the old games,

because the other 2 Consoles already failed at that. So, it doesnt get my any motivation to buy a Ps 4.

Also, what about Ps 3 games ? ( If the Ps 4 can already read Ps 3 games, im sorry, i didnt know that. ) You still have to buy a Ps 3 and a Ps 4 to play all the games, which is way more expensive than buying a Ps 1 or Ps 2 used somewhere.

They should have more focused on creating a new Emulator for Ps 3 games maybe, for people that dont have a Ps 3 yet ( but im also not sure, if that would work for all the games ), since the Emulators they have used so far for Ps 1 and Ps 2 games, cant play all the games and just doesnt work correctly.

I still have to buy me all the consoles, if i really want to be able to play ALL the games.

I can answer this question actually!

The PS3 was well known for its ability to "smooth out" PS1 and PS2 game (if you had the PS2 compatible model) so there is a good possibility that the system will be able to smooth out the games to look a little better on the PS4. However they will only look as good as 10 year+ games can look.

That all being said, let's not get ahead of ourselves yet. I mean for all we know this could just mean PS1 and PS2 classics are coming to the Playstation Store and not the support for the physical disks.

That or it could be like the Xbox One's backwards compatibility where it's such a small selection. If they are going to do PS2 and PS1 support I would rather FULL support. There is no licensing issues, I am not buying that story. Licensing issues would probably only affect a handful of games, but there should be at MINIMUM a 30% compatibility at launch of the update. 100 games (6+ of which were ALREADY AVAILABLE and a majority of others were download only arcade games) is not acceptable. Sony has more history than Microsoft and Sony has FAR MORE FIRST PARTY GAMES. ALL of Sony's first party games should work on day one. No excuses.

I am suspecting though that this could just be "we are re-releeasing the PS1 and PS2 classics on the store" though...

The Ps 3 had also cut scene problems with Ps 1 games and a few games just crashed.

The truth is, you're never going to get 100% perfect emulation. Conflicts in the hardware are going to occur because of how advanced the PS1+ were. They were very unique machines and thus emulating them is still not 100%. The older Nintendo consoles like the SNES were much more straight forward, thus emulation is easier for them.

There is a reason for this as well! The PS3 used a Cell processor with a unique GPU. These two pieces of hardware are very difficult to emulate at this time. They're so unique that it may take a long time before we start seeing playable emulation. The PS4 uses an x86 based (which is actually x64) processor. This was a NECESSARY change for BOTH the PS4 and the Xbox One and here is why:

The previous two consoles were Cell and PowerPC based. These are actually older, outdated CPU structures that had reached their limits in desktop computers YEARS ago. Apple actually stopped using them in 2006ish. Desktops which is where games are developed are all on x86 or x64 based processors for a reason, they support higher speeds and more hardware. Consoles NEED to be able to at the VERY LEAST look SIMILAR to PC graphics. They can't do that unless they are capable of running the hardware. When these consoles came out with 8GB of RAM, the ONLY WAY they could run it is by switching to x64 based processors. There was literally no other way.

This design is both a future-proof design and a long term design. Here's what I mean by that right:

So right now a lot of people are upset that these consoles don't support last gen. However this is ACTUALLY a plan for the FUTURE. So when the PS5 and Xbox Whatever come out, they will be able to support Xbox One and PS4 right out of the gate because they will also use the x64 based processors meaning they will be able to get flawless emulation because they run on updated versions of the same hardware! This is both companies planning for the future. It's actually a very intelligent design choice because this means that in 8 years from now they won't be having this problem again. The change NEEDED to happen at some point, so they decided to do it now.

I believe this will more likely mean we'll be getting PS1/PS2 classics on the PS4 Network rather than emulation and BC like the early PS3 model did

If it was the latter though it'd push me to get a PS4

If they do only digital distribution with old games I'd rather buy a PS2. For me physical media is still important.

i think that's awsome, i have an xbox one, however at some point getting a ps4 wouldn't hurt. Maybe if i slave at work this summer i can grab one. The ironic thing is i never had a ps2 growing up XD

That's nice to hear, I already have a model of PS3 that does the same thing. I just find it weird that PS1/2 games are going to be emulated/added to the PS Store. Yet still we can't play PS3 games on the PS4... right?

Wait, it was about PS1 & 2 discs working on the PS4...

You should try PS2 games. The 5/6 generation of gaming are one of the greatest.

I most likely will, i ended up always playing my friend's play stations growing up but never owned one.

There is still also the possibility that it will let you download your PS1/2 games via inserting the disk similar to how the Xbox One does. So long as they let me USE the games I already own without having to buy them again and as long as owning the physical disk means I will never "lose" them even if I make a new PSN, I am okay with that.

I'm just saying my PS3 can do PS2 and 1 games already. I am glad the PS4 is playing catch up.

Ok. I almost thought they will use digital distribution again.

Physical games ftw!

I wouldn't get my hopes up about this amounting to much. From the articles I read it's exclusively for a couple of Star Wars games and it doesn't sound like it was ever meant to go public. Almost like they were passing around test data for something else.

Until I hear definitive proof on it I don't imagine the PS4 will be able to emulate much of anything.

While having backward compatibility is a neat touch, I'm planing to buy a PS4 in a year regardless. Problem is, I only own Soul of the Samurai and Croc 1 for PS1, and I have no PS2 games whatsoever. Ugh, I sould have asked my aunt's Ace Combat  4 before she gave it away  >_>

I think the PS4 is powerful enough to emulate old games.

And Sony also added a media player for MP4 and other content. Good way to get rid of the reputation "expensive brick".

Well yeah. It's obviously powerful enough but that doesn't account for incompatible programming and ironing out the issues. They can't just copypasta the PS3's methods since it used an entirely different system, both in hardware and software, than every other console.

I have a PS4 but I'm going to use it solely as a PS4. I have a PS2 and PS3 for everything else.

Physical games ftw!

As I said, it MIGHT just be the classics returning to the store because they never explicitly said they were bringing back the ability to play physical media. But I SINCERELY HOPE THEY ARE because I've got FF8, FF9, Chrono Cross, and such that I would love to play but I prefer the PS4 controller to the PS3. That would motivate me to play them.

It was already confirmed that there are going to be games beyond those Star Wars games. In the article they were asked and they blatantly said that PS2 emulation was coming. They just have not said if it's going to be the classics returning to the store (which would kind of suck), or if they will support the physical disks.

I think the PS4 is powerful enough to emulate old games.

Sadly PS3 emulation though MAY be more complex. While running PS2 and PS1 is possible despite the older hardware not being the same arch, it is old enough to where software emulation is doable. The PS3 however is a bit too new to make software emulation "easy".

As much as I would prefer just popping in my PS1 and PS2 discs into my PS4 I highly doubt it will lead to that. Still it's nice that access to them will be there.

Hopefully Einhander will be released on the US PSN, but I'm not holding my breath. ;)

I'm all for backwards compatibility on newer systems. I'm one of those guys who has held on to all my previous generation games throughout the years and, well... they've been kinda just collecting dust these past few years. I actually really enjoyed the PS3's emulation of PS1 titles, despite the occasional glitch or crash, and I'd love to pop in some of the old PS2 games again for a trip down memory lane. Sure, they might be well outdated by now, but I also feel older titles have a certain charm to them that isn't present in most games today. A time when it wasn't really all about the grandeur & flashy scenes of it all. It's the same reason as why I like older movies from the 60's & 70's. :please:
