From what I know, a magical being's magic is based firstly on their cutie mark color, then their eye color and then their personal preference if neither is desirable. This was before it became apparent that a unicorn's/Alicorn's magic color is usually based on their cutie mark like Shining Armor, Cadance and Celestia, so I have yet made a decision on whether I should change it to a light blue like his cutie mark instead.
