gaming Most anticipated games of 2016

With another year, comes another round of games. Some of these might be slated for this year but end up releasing the following year for whatever reason, but being excited for a new game is something I have always loved.

So let's discuss, what are your most anticipated games for 2016?

Here is one of mine and it might seem really weird: Train Simulator for Xbox One. This was announced at Gamescom 2015 and I am actually very excited for it. :3 Seeing the PC version, it seems very well done and relaxing, plus seeing all of the different locations seems awesome. I am hyped for this one. Also looking forward to Final Fantasy XV if that gets a release this year.

What even comes out this year?

Twilight Princess HD and potentially Kingdom Hearts II.8. I guess there's also that Mario and Luigi game that I might try.

So for the most part, year of the remasters for me. Yay. Oh well, less money spent on video games, the better.

Tons of titles for me actually:

  • Horizon: Zero Dawn - Do you want to play as a cave woman in the future fighting robot dinosaurs? I didn't know I did until I saw this trailer, and the answer is yes, of course you do.
  • Detroit: Become Human - Another stellar graphical show off that is leading into a very wonderful story driven game, which I am all for. It definitely shows off the graphical power of the PS4 with ease.
  • The Legend of Zelda Wii U - While we don't really have a release for it yet, Zelda Wii U certainly will be on the top of a lot of people's lists of "gotta have it" games.
  • Doom - The big mother f***er of first person shooters returns. Ultra violence at its greatest. The denizens of hell shall be slaughtered in troves when Doom hits stores this spring.
  • Twilight Princess HD - As far as HD remasters go, Zelda usually gets a good treatment and it's definitely a good title to keep your Zelda appetite fed until Zelda Wii U.
  • Fallout 4 Expansions - Let's not forget we still haven't even gotten the first DLC for Fallout 4 yet, and Bethesda's track record usually comes with 4-5 expansions for their Fallout games, so we have virtually enough content to dump another 100 hours into Fallout 4 on the way.
  • Starcraft 2 Mission Packs - While Starcraft 2 may be over, mission packs expanding on the universe and story will be being released throughout 2016. So if you're like me and can't get enough of the Starcraft universe, then this is a good thing.
  • Battleborn - Gearbox has turned Borderlands into a MOBA and it's glorious.
  • Persona 5 - JRPG fans will take great pleasure in finally getting their hands on the sequel to the much loved Persona 4.

And of course games that we are "uncertain" when they release, but "might" release in 2016:

  • Kingdom Heart 3 - Though to be honest, I doubt it will release in 2016, and honestly I doubt it'll release at all at this rate, at least not on the PS4. There's a good chance it'll be delayed until next gen at this rate.
  • Final Fantasy VII remake - Yes. Just. Yes.
  • The Last Guardian - While they promised a 2016 release date, I am skeptical considering the game was promised for release on PS3 and it never happened.

I'm a bit shocked you wouldn't apply the same skepticism to Zelda U. Pretty much everything you've told me concerns you about KHIII being released any time soon very much applies to Zelda U as well.

And that's why I included neither title in my post. I do not expect them this year.

The games I'm mostly looking forward to is the new Legend of Zelda game for the Wii U which I think would act like The Elder Scrolls and Pokemon Go where we can finally get to see Pokemon in our world! :D

Starfox Zero - I'm a big Starfox fan and it's been almost a decade since the last one(SF643D doesn't count). Despite my disappointment with it essentially being another SF64 remake(no Miyamoto, calling it a "reimagining" doesn't make it less of a remake), it still looks like a lot of fun and should quench my Starfox 2 itch.

Zelda U - Obvs

Twilight Princess HD - May not look like much, but Twilight Princess is my second favorite Zelda so I'm biased for it

Persona 5 - I love this series and every bit of news makes me more excited for it

SMTxFE - Looks weird as fuck but it also looks a ton of fun

Horizon Zero Dawn - My favorite game from the last Sony E3, it might push me to finally get a PS4. Hopefully it doesn't get delayed

TMNT(Platinum) - My Platinum fanboyism is strong with this one, if it's anything like Transformers Devastation I'll be in for a good time

Off the top of my head there are two games that sold me on getting a PS4:

Dark Souls III: Ever since I first started playing this series (Souls/Bloodborne) early last year, it has become one of my favorite of all time. I love the combat in all the games and I'm excited to see what the next installment will bring.

Persona 5: Persona 3/4 are in my top 5 games of all time. The thing I like most would probably be the social/Visual Novel-esque aspect of the games, so I'm looking forward to what new characters and mechanics they can bring to the series. I think it would be really interesting to see the Social Link aspect of 3/4 combined with the combat of early Shin Megami Tensei games.

The only reason I am not giving the same feeling about Zelda Wii U is that we actually have been given release times for it. We were told it will be coming out this year, and we have not been given diddly for KH3 except "It's in development" and "Eventually" and a whole lot of "here's some footage now stop asking us". Zelda Wii U has been in development and we know that the only reason it was delayed was because the game wasn't finished yet, so the game exists, whereas we are not even entirely certain that KH3 exists in any capacity beyond tech demos. Nintendo flat out said that they had to push the game back to 2016, but  they gave us a release time, whereas KH3 did not give us anything of a release date.

To top this off, Twilight Princess HD is going to include content that will be transferred over to Zelda Wii U, so we know that they have already set everything up for the game to be released, there is code in Twilight Princess HD that is going to affect Zelda Wii U, so we know Zelda Wii U is coming soon.

Thus Zelda Wii U is a whole other monster than KH3 which has been being "talked about" and "teased" for nearly 10+ years now and was announced as "in development" for almost 2 years without a release date or even release year in sight. Hell, Square Enix is still in the planning phases as they have not even finished deciding what worlds will exist in the game and they are in the process of getting licenses still. That basically translates to me that KH3 is more or less still not even halfway done, whereas Zelda Wii U just needed more time, possibly to be ready for an NX double launch.

I acknowledge your points here, but the reason I brought this up is because the amount of footage shown/information revealed for both games is very similar. Zelda fans are really getting annoyed by the lack of footage and information for Zelda U, and are losing hope of it releasing any time soon. Nintendo may have given time frames, but time-frames for a console Zelda are meaningless. Nintendo is flat-out notorious for delaying console Zelda titles. The lack of information and footage certainly does not give me faith in a 2016 release at this point.

Besides, I don't think it's very fair to bring up that KHIII has been "teased" and "talked about" for 10+ years. For goodness sake, KHII itself was released almost exactly 10 years ago, and KHIII was not announced until two or so years ago. If you're going to give this treatment to KHIII, than it's only fair to say that Zelda U has been teased for several years itself.

That may be true, however Nintendo is being far more assuring towards the completion of the game. They have gone as far as to promise we will see the reveal of the game at E3 2016, that's more than Square Enix can say whom have not even set a release year yet. Nintendo also has explanations for why Zelda games get pushed back EVERY time it happens. To top it off, it is following the same pattern as Twilight Princess did with the Wii launch. In other words, this has happened before around a console launch, so there is no reason to even be concerned.

Besides, I don't think it's very fair to bring up that KHIII has been "teased" and "talked about" for 10+ years

How is it not? Ever since the release of Kingdom Hearts 2, we have been told that KH3 would happen and then we even got told that it would happen on the PS3 and it never did. To top that off, Square Enix is famous for teasing us with things that either never happen or take a really long time. Remember when we were teased with the Final Mix versions of the games that we didn't get until 2013? We were told we would be getting them only about 2 years after KH2 came out, and then suddenly it went dark.

Square Enix has told us about plans to make KH3 for many years, and only a short time after 2 came into existence. So to say that plans for KH3 were almost 10 years in the making is a fair assessment because Square Enix has been planning it since 2. The fact that they announced the development of the game 2 years ago and are still in the PLANNING stages after 10 years of planning, is kind of pathetic.

If you're going to give this treatment to KHIII, than it's only fair to say that Zelda U has been teased for several years itself.

How so? Zelda Wii U has only been "rumored" for 2 years and was only confirmed for a little over 1. Nintendo confirmed it was a release time as well, not saying it was "in development" with no release time. To top this off the two aren't comparable because KH3 has been being planned since KH2, Zelda Wii U has not been being planned that long as the Wii U didn't even exist until 3 years ago. There is no way that Nintendo was planning Zelda Wii U back in 2005 like KH. Nintendo doesn't really plan Zelda games in a chronological sense that KH games are made. KH games are made to follow and pick up a story where it left off and Zelda games are not. Zelda games are designed individually a lot of the time completely free from the other games, so it wouldn't really make much sense that Nintendo was planning Zelda Wii U any longer than the Wii U's existence. That being said, Zelda Wii U has more than likely been being planned since 2012, and in development since 2013 at best. Meaning in terms of development it is actually right on track and one of the SHORTEST development times for a Zelda game ever if it releases in 2016.

Whereas KH3 we all KNOW Square Enix intended to happen eventually. We KNOW that they made 2 knowing 3 would be made and knowing that it would follow a specific path. The series creator said he had a vision of 3 since they finished 2, so a lot of the story was plotted out back then, they were just missing the extra details, but after 10 years of planning, and 2 years of actually starting work, the details should have been finalized already and they are not. Square Enix admitted they are still deciding on worlds which means that they haven't even negotiated licensing for everything necessary for the game yet. They are more or less in VERY early phases compared to Zelda Wii U.

We'll definitely know more at E3 2016, but as it stands right now, based upon the information available: I would have to say it's a far safer bet to assume that Zelda Wii U is right on track for a 2016 release as promised and that KH3 is more or less in development hell currently with no finish time in sight. That and Square Enix just stole a chunk of the KH3 development team to work on FFVII Remake which will slow everything down further. Nothing like that coming from Nintendo.

I think the game I am mostly looking forward to this year is Gears 4. I don't have very high hopes for the series after Judgment, but I'm hoping it will surprise me.

Okay, Mr. Expert-On-Gaming-Industry. I can't win against you. However, I will point out that where I was going with saying that Zelda U has been 'teased' for several years wasn't saying that it has been teased since 2005, but that it has been since 2011/2012 shortly after Skyward Sword was released. It was during that time where Nintendo teased it by saying they'll have the next console Zelda out in three years.

I really don't think SE went much further in "teasing" KHIII until the point that they actually showed it a couple of years ago. Before then it was just an inevitable title. I don't remember it being confirmed for the PS3. Otherwise I would have been out in a rush to get one, trust me. Whereas I had no motivation to get one until mid-2014.

That's about the norm for games these days. KH3 we've been told about since 2005 after KH2.

Oh yeah they told us back in the day that the next title would be "on next gen platforms" after the PS2 games. But they pretty much mislead us because they actually meant "The PSP, and the DS". Not the PS3, but can you blame people for assuming they meant PS3? All three of the other games at the time were on the Playstation 2, so naturally people assumed it meant PS3 due to their vagueness.

Honestly the creator of KH even said he didn't feel they should have announced KH3 yet. Basically Square Enix announced it because they were in a slump and they needed to give investors reassurance that they will remain profitable. I mean don't you find it odd that only a few months before the KH3 announcement Sony sold all of their stock in Square Enix? That's a huge investor basically pulling out of Square Enix and then Square Enix pretty much had to go "WAIT KH3! SEE! WE'LL MAKE A GOOD GAME. PROMISE."

I can't decide which of these two games I'm looking more forward too:

Persona 5. With each trailer, I want this game more and more. While I was saddened that it was pushed back to 2016, Atlus looks to be pulling out the all the stops for this one, and then some.

Zero Escape 3: Zero Time Dilemma. The long awaited conclusion to the mind-blowing visual novel trilogy, which was condemned to video game purgatory until finally being announced late last year.
