Isn't it overwhelming, how many forms of Entertainment we have these days?

Wasn't sure if i should put it in the Media section, of if it's good enough for a general discussion, so here it goes.

I just recently thought of my childhood and the things that i had back then. Back then, for example, i waited for a whole week, to watch my favorite TV Shows and when it came to Video Games, i just had a limited collection of Video Games at my disposal.

These days, when i want to watch a certain programm or movie, i just go on my Netflix Account and pick out of 1000 Shows and movies and i also have over 100 video game titles on Steam at my disposal. While i also have other things to entertainment myself.

I look at all that and i ask myself "Boy, that's so much." Sometimes, i just don't know what to do, because i am getting buried by all this stuff. Like, do we really need that much? I kinda feel like Back to the future 2 became real, because these days, i feel like watching 6 channels at the same time, just to keep up with everything.

Do you sometimes get overwhelmed by that? Would you like it a bit more simple?

(If this is the wrong section, please move it)

You may not need as much. Apparently for some people that's not enough. Don't get me wrong, i agree wholeheartedly but the thing is there are too many people today that have become addicted to this overabundance of entertainment and feel the need for more and more media.

For me, it is not overwhelming at all. Sure I am missing out of a LOT OF games :) But that is ok :) There are still others that enjoy it and that is great :D. Besides, they will still be there and you can play them later if you wish :). So I think it is great that so many games and other things are being made :D

Sometimes it can be. But as someone who mostly watches animated programming, I don't find this to be nearly as big of an issue as some people would. Plus sometimes it's fun to discover a show that you have never heard of before.

It's only overwhelming in the sense that I don't have nearly enough time for the sheer amount of entertainment I have access to. Literally thousands of video games and movies, hundreds of anime and at least a few dozen cartoons. There's just not enough time to enjoy it all. Especially since you have to work to have access too all of these things.

It can be overwhelming, but that depends on how much you want to do in the first place. My main focus is video games, that is my main form of media entertainment. TV shows and movies are a distant second, so the only thing that feels overwhelming for me is the amount of games out there. o_o There's a lot.

I agree that there is no shortage of readily available media on hand these days, but I don't necessarily view that as a bad thing. Even with thousands of movies, TV shows and games to choose from, I usually end up only sticking to a select few. It can become a bit ridiculous when I'm trying to keep up with all of the new releases. Sometimes things slip right by me and I only end up hearing about it from word of mouth or my friends, only to start watching it when all of a sudden another must see series comes out. That I admit can be a bit overwhelming. Just let me finish watching what I was on first darnit!

I don't think it's overwhelming when I don't think about it. But when I compare what I have to what kids used to do, I'm surprised kids didn't get depressed from boredom XD

Seriously though, the entertainment has actually made us enjoy less, because we have so much we can't cope with having less. Even though we don't consciously think of it, but we do deem just having someone else around to be less worth than watching our favourite show (guess which is mine :P) or playing our game; trying to reach a high score (depending on game and person, of course). This may not be true with you, but I find when I'm around other people, and I'm playing a video game or watching a video, I'm more into that, than the person. I think it's normal when you compare the two:

1. A colourful, flashing motion of images, usually with some aspect that entertains you in the first place.

2. A person, who may something neat to say, but it comes out maybe more bland, and is shrouded by our current entertainment...

I don't I said anything new, but I gotta go now before I miss my bus lol

Bored? Want to be more bored! Check out my channel (and sub :P) to wait for the upcoming abridged series!

Yeah it is pretty overwhelming for sure :D But I have an incredibly over-active brain that literally LOVES having so much to focus on at once. There's always something new and fresh to enjoy, and I love that ^^

For me, not that much has changed.

In my childhood i had a console, a Tv and a Computer.

Today im still using the same things.

But the graphics that todays Games and the Quality that todays Movies have, is just unbelievable.  :pinkie:

Not to me. I downgraded. When I was a kid, I had one of those old box TVs, a Gamecube, a VCR, and a Gameboy. Now I have a smartphone, which I can't really do a whole lot on. A few consoles and other things came and went between then and now.

Even before we moved and I got rid of most of my stuff, we didn't have cable/satellite TV, or Netflix/Hulu or whatever. We had what was available to us as hard copies.

And I loved it like that.

I'm overwhelmed to the point where I don't have any darn time to enjoy it all. Information moves at light speed and I'm just here trying to absorb tiny tidbits that may of fall off.

  • 3 years later...

It's an interesting topic and question to be fair. On one hand it is interesting that we have so much media around us to keep us entertained, so much that we can pick and choose our interests however we want. But I can see how it can be overwhelming. The best solution is balance in my opinion, between videogames/media and hobbies/productive activities. That way it hopefully won't feel as overwhelming.
