I hope it's CG

Noooooooooooooooooooooope. Nope. I would rather them do a little test project and upload it to YouTube instead of making the whole film like that. CG to me just wouldn't have the same charm. It would make everything look so flat and dull. The current style might seem simple, but it is amazing how vibrant and memorable it is.

No! or yes. but it can only go two ways:

The good way:

Or the bad way:

large.gifAnd I did use these exact gifs in a topic talking about the movie being live action with CG ponies.

You have your whole life left, so much to do, so much time to do it.

Use it wisely; Because you will never get a second chance.

That is the absolute LAST thing I would want for this movie. Oh god no do I not want that.

Like, the only way I would want CG is if its like the Timberwolves from FIM, still 2d. But even then I don't want it to be ALL CG, that would ruin the feel of the show.
On that note, isn't it already confirmed its using toonboom?

Pretty sure it's Adobe Flash, or perhaps they use Adobe Animate now.

It's ToonBoom. I've seen it confirmed from several sites.

Really? but tons of people use flash to re-create the animation style and plenty (like saber sparks) have said it's flash.

My little pony has some of the best animation ever created. All they would need to do for me is add better lighting and movement like in the Spongebob movie.  You can't CGI the Powerpuff girls and you can't CGI My little pony.

I hope they don't use TV quality animation (nor CGI). SpongeBob was never known for its animation, so they didn't need to use anything special on the big screen.

MLP actually uses its visuals to storytell and has the environment for some beautiful animation.

Um, no. Nonononono no. No.

Part of the reason I'm excited for this movie is being able to see the shows unique animation took to the next level for a feature film and see it on the big screen, not to have it look like everything else coming out nowadays.

I found some of the cg examples super adorable. But apparently (By reading the other comments) the world would blow up if they used cg. To be honest cg would be a risk, and they risk and loose nothing by using the normal art style.

But if they use CG, non bronies would also find the movie attractive from the trailers, and would go to see it. In flash, only bronies will watch this movie.

CG would just be a poor attempt at imitating Disney and take away from movie. Changing it from 2D would most likely keep away a fair amount of people from seeing it.

No way! The show's beautiful 2D Flash animation is already perfect! Making the movie CGI would most likely downgrade the animation quality. The X-Men movies have lots of cheap-looking CGI effects, especially compared to the much more convincing 90's cartoon.

I agree that it needs to stay in the signature 2-D style that makes it so charming.  3D CG would feel like a cave to pop-culture pressure of sorts.  Plus, it's perilous to transition 2-D characters to 3D.  They inevitably aren't really the same characters anymore.  It's tough to get it right.  I really like the SFM pony stuff, and I think they're cute, but I certainly wouldn't want the movie to be like that, even if the quality was bammed up a notch.  For one thing, mesh hair ain't so hot.  They look like inflatable manes, or in Rarity's case, partially inflated manes, or in Celestia's case, a frigging pool raft.  I actually took a mighty whack at making a pony model of unprecedented quality, using particle hair and fur, and a powerful realistic lighting engine.  Here, I'll give you a sample:

post-26336-0-69453100-1465543466_thumb.png

The response from the fandom was a fairly even split between "awesome and adorable" and "creepy uncanny valley."  It was disappointing, as I put a lot of work into them and thought they were adorable, but I understand.  In my more dispassionate moments, I can see what a subtle knife edge it is.  For example, I thought that the 3D Garfield in the live action Garfield movie was a terrifying abomination.  Horrible, creepy as hell.  Others may have loved it.  Somebody obviously did.  The point is, it's really hard to get right, and I don't think it's possible to perfectly translate a 2D character to 3D.  I can personally attest to how difficult it is, and the obstacles were many.

Something else to be aware of is that in 3D, you're much more limited in the movements and expressions you can do, whereas in 2D, you can literally do anything.  One of the biggest limitations I found is that in 3D, pegasi simply cannot fly in an outstretched, aerodynamic pose.  Real horses obviously cannot do this:

mlp_resource__rainbow_dash_02_by_zuthesk

And I'm convinced that no rig, no matter how complex, can achieve this in 3D, and still have the pony look accurate the rest of the time.  Quadrupeds simply can't make a Superman pose, because they don't have shoulders that are inline with their neck and back.  If you pay attention during the show, you'll notice that the ponies' bodies simply don't always cohere, even disregarding obvious slapstick.  In other words, they will do things in one shot that would be completely impossible given their anatomy, and then in the next shot their legs are attached in a completely different place.  For example, their front legs often shift between legs and arms, and have inconsistent joints that belie all logic.  In 2D, we accept this incongruity and don't notice it.  It just works.  In 3D, the ponies would be limited to more realistic equine movements.  You'd never see a 3D pony sitting like a human, with front legs folded behind their head like arms.  I don't think we'd want to lose that sort of personification and freedom that you get in 2D.  You'd just lose too much flexibility in 3D.  The only way to even think about it, imo, would be in another MLP generation that's done more realistically.

Well, that went on longer than I intended.  Anyway, the movie should definitely remain in the style that is FIM, however, I really hope they fancy it up a wee-bit, with lighting and cinematography above what we see on the show.  I expect they will.

Correct. Here is where EqD caught that DHX posted Toon Boom boarders needed.

The film is staying 2D, otherwise the ramp up would have involved a larger hiring push for that skill set. You can't hide trade postings.

I'm really excited for ToonBoom MLP. The characters and background animated like a Disney film (Princess and the Frog was in TB) will look stunning.

We've already been accustomed to the current animation style for so long and releasing it in CG is just following all the other popular animated films currently released.

The MLP movie needs to stand out from the CG bandwagon where story and characters brings substance, regardless of 3D animation.

Part of the love fans have for the show is the style. The movie would be a train wreck if they made it CG.
