I usually don't like people who label themselves as "straight edge". I know they aren't all the same, but most of them are so judgmental. I don't see the problem with partaking in alcohol, marijuana, or cigarettes, or not partaking in these activities.

 

It's a very small percent of people who drink alcohol or smoke marijuana that get addicted (and you can only be mentally addicted to marijuana). Even those who do aren't usually bad people anyway and already had other mental issues that leads to addiction.

 

As I said earlier, I have no problem with people who don't partake in drinking or drugs. That would be stupid if I did. I just can't stand the pretentious attitude so many people seem to have that label themselves as "straight edge". I don't see the need to label yourself as that anyway. I don't run around with a shirt on that says "I drink!" on it.

Those words shouldn't be in the same sentence. But then again, the Straight Edge culture does make some sense.

 

Its also a metal thing too. That is what it was when I was that wave of straight edge through high school. But it started out in punk/hardcore punk. At least that is what I understand.

However, on the reverse side of things you look at some posts in this topic and they also come off as a bit condescending themselves. You know with that tone of "Once you turn 21, you won't be like that anymore."

 

I'm 23. Still have no interest in any of that stuff.

 

I try not to be condescending. I believe people can do whatever they want with their own bodies. Just keep me out of it, is all I ask.

But a town about a 130 miles away they had this thing called hardline. It was Strait Edge kids beating up anyone that they saw smoking or drinking.

Now that is just plain old stupid. i understand someone hating smoking (I smoke cigs and it is an awful awful thing to do) but basic medication for asthma or pain (Vicodin)???? Freaking about that is absurd.

Envy states all of my views quite nicely.

 

Though I'm not 23 and am still under the drinking age, I have no interest in that stuff and I never will. Though I'm not really a "punkish" person, nor would I like to label myself with Straight Edge, I honestly come quite close to it. For a young adult, I am very cleanly and sort of finicky. I don't like loud music, massive parties, drunkeness, alcohol, or drugs at all. Honestly, my mind's crazy enough as it is. I don't need mind-altering substances to make it any worse.

 

I'm okay with those who do all of that stuff though. Except the ones who insist that I'm having a stick on my ass for not enjoying them and saying: "Oh, you will someday." Quite frankly, I find that insulting. Just because I don't want to drink, doesn't mean I'm some sort of person who doesn't enjoy fun. I just don't have fun in that way. Sure, I'm one of the rare people who's like that. But I would at least like to be respected for my decisions. I don't think I'm better than anyone who does that stuff, so I don't see why they should think the inverse of me.

Anyway for a couple years I was basically living straight edge without meaning to. Even now I still sort of am but with a glass of wine thrown in on a rare occasion. Oh and some chocolate too (though more frequently than the wine). I think if you enjoy doing things, then do them in moderation. As long as they are not hurting you or anyone else, I don't see what the big deal is.

 

I must say some of the pro drinkers can come on just as strongly as the sort of preachy straight edge kids too. They act like you have to have a reason to not drink and will pester you and act like you're broken because you don't want to partake of it. I even had one guy want to fight me because I didn't want to have a drink with him.

I try to avoid alcohol and drugs because I am unstable as it is already and would like to avoid farther damage to my body, my mind, and the possessions of those around me, including but not limited to their bodies and minds.

I certainly don't call myself straight edge, but I don't do any recreational drugs except for the rare iced tea or root beer (if a certain brand happens to have caffeine). I don't like the taste of alcohol, and I don't like feeling out of control of my faculties or feeling like I'm wasting time. Besides, most drugs have the side effect of either being a diuretic or just drying out your eyes, and when you have my stupid, recurrent corneal erosion problem, you have to be extra careful.

 

Adrenaline, dopamine and serotonin on the other hand, I like...

Oh gosh, yeah I don't like it when people say that either. Especially if someone says they don't plan on ever drinking or whatever then decides to go ahead and try something and everyone rubs it in their faces. I've had that happen to me. It's so rude!

I wouldn't say I'm straight-edge, I just don't give a shit.

I don't really do anything that would cut me out of that label but the only reason I don't do it is because I'm always too lazy or too busy to uphold a habit such as smoking or drinking.

For one I'm not quite old enough to drink or do... well, anything yet really, but If I had a mind to, I could, but why go out of my way to do it?

If the opportunity presented itself, I suppose I would probably partake, but if not, I don't care.

Also, my health wouldn't allow for any type of long term habits or any activities with lasting effects such as smoking or drinking so that also factors heavily into the situation.

Either way, I just don't give enough shits to uphold the straight-edge culture or otherwise even, I guess I'll just have to see what happens.

Never heard of it, although I guess I'm not far off. I don't smoke or do drugs. I drink but very very rarely.
