Episodes of FiM that you just can't watch anymore

Recommended Posts

We all have *those* episodes for this show, an episode or episodes that we cannot bring ourselves to watch again. Tons of reasons could be involved. Could be because the episode made you cringe into Oblivion, maybe the episode was just terrible, or perhaps it was an episode that was just boring. Whatever the reason might be, have at it! What episodes of FiM do you just avoid like the plague these days?

Probably the biggest one for me now, is Tanks for the Memories. From the start, this episode was already a very sad premise, a metaphor for death, for losing a pet. That alone made me feel rather down about the subject matter. Now though, with the recent loss of my dog, I don't think I could ever bring myself to even think much of this episode, let alone watch it. It is one of those things that will just hit too close to home for me now to handle it.

Another one? Why, another Rainbow Dash episode!

Newbie Dash. F*** this episode and everything it stands for. Not only was the episode horrible (to me at least), it also was such a massive disappointment and a waste slot for something that could have been wonderfully squee heavy. Instead, it just fumbles in the dark for the entirety of its run and I don't think I will ever witness this one twice. Of course, that is my view on it.

i second that, i hated the newbie dash episode and applejacks day off, they just took all the common seance and complex character design and blended it so it could be spoon fed to little kids who are too young to even appreciate the show for what it is and the moral messages it portrays >:C
when i re-watch FIM on the holidays ima skip those 2 for sure

any episode from season 3

also Somepony to Watch Over Me, worst episode from season 4, way to completely throw out Applejack's hard working can-do attitude for a completely shallow and unrealistic babysitter character

MMDW was probably the first episode I actively disliked and wanted nothing more than to wipe it from my brain. I still haven't seen it ever since I first saw it, and actively avoid its reruns, including its zombie rehash

any episode from season 3

This show is very diverse with a lot of variety. On one hand, it means the show appeals to all kinds of people. On another hand, it means I can't force myself to rewatch more than half of the episodes, and I actually like to rewatch less than quarter of them.

I generally can't rewatch episodes that do nothing interesting with the plot or the characters, have simple, childish comedy or have a tone that I dislike.

any episode from season 3

Wow, even Sleepless in Ponyville and Wonderbolts Academy? The latter is decent and the first one is a fucking tearjerker for me. Also, people in general like those two episodes. What do you think of them?

I can't rewatch any episode. Not one of them is good enough to see them more than once in my opinion.

Not a single one? Not even Return of Harmony, Best Night Ever, Amending Fences or Suited For Success? Huh, that's interesting.

What exactly makes all episodes impossible to rewatch in your opinion? Do you really find every single one of them that unimpressive?

It's rare that I rewatch an episode, but some episodes that I refuse to suffer through again include Mysterious Mare-Do-Well (for obvious reasons), Make New Friends But Keep Discord, Brotherhooves Social (for the sheer level of cringe) and Newbie Dash (again, for obvious reasons)

And, this is going to sound horrible, but I have a hard time rewatching most of S1. Not that they're bad or anything, far from it, but many of them don't sound right. The VA's had yet to grow into the characters we know and love, so at times character like Twilight and especially Applejack sound kind of off to me.

Spike at Your Service is the only one I find truly unbearable, but I don't particularly want to rewatch Games Ponies Play or What about Discord either (Those are the three worst episodes of the show IMO).

There are a few, all of which I hate:

  1. Mare Do Well: Completely painful to sit through. Blatantly OOC Mane Six, OOC Ponyville, and the endorsement of a mean-spirited, hypocritical attitude.
  2. Owl's Well: Worst Twilight characterization. Everything in the episode reinforces the idea of Spike being jealous in our faces. To make that worse, Spike being abused for comedy.
  3. Princess Spike. Hate it so much. Spikabuse, non sequitur moral, unlikable one-shot characters, and especially an ending with sexist implications.
  4. Newbie Dash: Cringe humor that doesn't understand what makes Dash's impersonations funny in the first place. The — Moral. That OFFENSIVE moral. "Suck up the bullying/hazing as long as it's good fun." Unacceptable on ALL circumstances! FUCK this episode!
  5. Flutter Brutter: Zephyr. May he never appear in an episode again!
  6. 28 Pranks Later: Rips off Mare Do Well, doesn't understand why it's awful, strips away everything that's good about it, and has a much worse moral. An episode so terrible, I couldn't finish it the first time!

Oh, man, where to begin...

The Cutie Pox - Easily one of the worst CMC episodes ever, and in my opinion, it's the worst episode of season 2. I still can't believe AKR wrote this.

Mysterious Mare-Do-Well - This episode has been thoroughly ripped to shreds by the fandom so there isn't much I could add, but it just amazes me how almost nothing about this episode makes any sense. This story honestly seems more suited for the comics.

Spike at Your Service - Spike has gotten some pretty bad episodes, but this has got to be the worst of the worst. It paints him as mind-numbingly incompetent and unable to complete simple tasks, which is virtually the opposite of his character.

Twilight's Kingdom - Outside of the scene that everyone adores so much, the writing here is just abysmal. This two-parter features Celestia at her most incompetent, and it's honestly to the point where I legitimately wonder why anyone trusts her to rule the country anymore. Twilight's decision to give up her magic was nothing but pure idiocy on her part, and in all seriousness, it should have gotten her and her friends all killed. There's definitely a problem when the plot is so heavily on your side that you cannot fail, no matter how dumb your decisions are.

Princess Spike - Almost as bad as SAYS, and definitely Spike's second worst episode.

The One Where Pinkie Knows - This episode was just annoying. It's one and only joke stopped being funny only five minutes in, and it was just painful that they kept it going to almost the final minute of the episode.

Newbie Dash - After FIVE seasons of buildup to this moment, Dash most certainly deserved better than this atrocity. Why they gave this one to a new writer will always be a mystery to me.

Flutter Brutter - Despite Fluttershy's excellent characterization here, Zephyr makes this episode borderline unwatchable. Definitely one of the worst characters ever introduced on the show.

The Cart Before the Ponies - I cannot even begin to understand why this episode exists. It's so out of place in season 6 that even if it had aired in season 1, Applejack, Dash, and Rarity would still have seemed out of character. It also did absolutely nothing for the CMC's new arc, thus rendering it all the more pointless. This episode could have easily gone towards advancing their arc, or even Starlight's arc.

28 Pranks Later - This episode clearly thinks that its dumb and pointless zombie gimmick would save it from its terrible writing and how OOC Dash was. It didn't. Yet another episode that could have easily gone to advancing Starlight or the CMC. Nothing of value would have been lost if this episode did not exist.

S1 "The Show Stoppers" / Cringe

S1 "Owl's Well That Ends Well" / Because I can't stand Owlowiscious /And Twilight's attitude in this episode especially/

S2 "A Friend In Deed" / Because Pinkie Pie came across way too annoying.

S3 I dunno. I disliked "Spike at Your Service" but I wouldn't call it "unwatchable''

S4 I would re-watch everything

S5 "Brotherhooves Social" / Extreme amount of cringe

S5 "Make New Friends but Keep Discord" / Cringe yet again

S6 "Applejack's Day Off" / Worst episode of the series overall /for me/. There are so many wrong things with this I don't even know where to start.

I think I'm missing something.

  • Owl's Well That Ends Well - My least favorite FiM episode. The blatantly OOC Mane 6 (especially Twilight) uncharacteristically treat Spike like dirt, and treat his sadness as a fit of "jealousy". I hate the characterization. I hate the conflict. Pretty much everything about Owl's Well is a dud.
  • Rarity Investigates - This may raise some eyebrows, but I remember being very underwhelmed by this episode. It's not necessarily a poorly constructed episode or anything, it's just that the black & white, old school investigative sylistic approach just wasn't my kinda thing. It wasn't fun to watch. I couldn't get into the conflict, and I disliked the overall aesthetic.
  • Three's a Crowd - This episode drags on and on, and never really pays off in any sort of meaningful way. The opening train scene lasts nearly half the episode and kills the mood of the episode from the get-go. Pinkie Pie getting wisped away from the episode by a balloon? That's just lazy writing.
  • The Hooffield and McColts - I don't really have much to say about this other than it's a really bad episode. I didn't care for the characters. Didn't care for the scenery. Didn't care for the rehashed conflict.
  • Appleloosa's Most Wanted - Similar to Hooffield and McColts, I don't have much to say about this one. This episode's poor attempts at humor fall distinctly flat.
  • 28 Pranks Later - Super predictable story which rehashes Mysterious Mare Do Well, but in a much worse way. It's hard to sit through

Dishonorable mentions: Flutter Brutter - This would be on the list for sure if it wasn't for Fluttershy's great characterization, the episode's only redeeming factor. And Newbie Dash - A massive letdown and perhaps the most disappointing FiM episode ever considering its potential. The only slightly redeemable factor is getting to see the gorgeous world design that the Wonderbolt's live in.

Friendship is Magic Part 1 and 2:

After having to watch these with my parents and explain why I like this show, I can never watch these two ever again.

Secret of My Excess:

I dislike the Sparity ship.

Hurricane Fluttershy:

As a person who suffers from stage fright and social anxiety, this one is just hard to watch.

Equestria Games:

Same as Hurricane Fluttershy. Plus, it's not very interesting.

I can't rewatch any episode. Not one of them is good enough to see them more than once in my opinion.

Very true.

The episodes I can't watch anymore are:

A Friend in Deed: Aside from the "Smile Song", it just makes me cringe.

Lesson Zero: This is the episode that made me a Twilight Sparkle fan.

But, now I just feel second hand embarrassment  for her when I watch it.

Every Discord episode after "Return of Harmony 1&2" : I just don't find him funny.

Flutter Brutter: I disliked this one so much the first time I'll never watch it again.

Secret of My Excess: I don't really like this one.

Filli Vanilli: I like Rarity's parts but, other than that I don't really like this one.

Putting Your Hoof Down: This just made me sad.

Mm, the ones with Flim and Flam and the one with thr yaks. Those are the only three I wouldn't mind skipping. I find them to be annoying as characters, bot thr brothers and the yaks. The yaks especially seem to be portrayed so one dimensional, even if they make it up at the end.

Not many others I don't like much, except maybe MMDW. It seems a bit pushy with the message. Oh and the one in S4 with Discord was not my favorite either. I don't like how he was portrayed in it. He has gotten better in the others though. Applejack's Day Off wasn't my favorite either.

I would say only those six are not the best. Overall an amazing show, I just find those to be my least favorite.

I see more hate for Newbie Dash. Honestly it was  a good episode in my opinion. Not to go far off topic but it wasn't cringeworthy to me. Maybe not the best, but I also don't think the lesson is horrible either, though a bit strange.

The somewhat dull and very overrated Cutie Map.

After Starlight's really bad character reformation and lackluster backstory, it makes it hard to take her seriously as a villain who was praised for being "morally complex" and other things like that, the analysis community gave the episode praise for, when her entire motivation for torturing ponies by actually brainwashing them (them mane 6 and the characters introduced in the Cutie Map), forcefully removing their cutie marks and their inner most parts of the mane 6's beings, assimilating them into your doctrine, actively trying to ruin somebody's life, royally screwing over time and space leading to the world being royally screwed up, several murder attempts, and assaulting children is that her friend got her cutie mark, and they apparently never saw each other again.

That is literally all we knew at that point in time.

And I find it insane how she obtained no punishment for who knows how many human rights violations she caused by the end of the season.

Because of this both the season premiere and finale make the other one look worse by comparison.

It is a really odd case.

Even if outside of that one major issue I have with it, I don't hate or even dislike the Cutie Re- Mark.

I would have liked it a lot better if they expanded upon her backstory and pulled a Peridot from Steven Universe with how she were to be handled in season 6.

I couldn't even watch Slice of Life all of the way through even once. I had already seen the Vinyl and Octavia scene through the previews, and it was so terrible that I could not even bear to even begin to watch it again with the actual episode. The whole episode was an atrocity, though, so...

So, I guess that I can say that some season 6 episodes have been a waste to make. Newbie Dash was one of them obviously.

Applejack's Day Off was also a close second. But the only good thing about that episode was Applejack being chicken XD

And I must admit that

28 Pranks later was also bad in some ways. I mean, instead of just talking to Rainbow face to face, all of ponyville had to scar her for life. Not only that, the first time they had to go to Pinkie for help. I know that some characters can be unpredictable but come on! So yeah, also bad, yet predictable but I can see people try and disagree with this.

From season 5, the only two episode I missed out on was Princess Spike and What About Discord, and I was told personally that I should skip them cause they were bad.

So. I do feel bad for anypony (even Spike) that has gotten some bad episodes in the past, i mean at least do some bit of research before writing an episode and base the stories on the roles that they were meant to have instead of just making them look awkward and cringy and stuff.

Sorry about the little rant I had, don't take me seriously. D:

There's plenty that I wouldn't actively want to re-watch, but even some of the more tedious and uninteresting episodes, which I wouldn't re-watch unless going over the whole season, don't upset me that I want to actively avoid them. These episodes, however? To varying degrees, I'd really rather not have to sit through them ever again.

By season:

Season 1

"Boast Busters" -- I do not find Trixie at all entertaining to watch here, and so much time is spent on her (intentionally) grating attitude that it'd need a solid surrounding episode to be entertaining. Unfortunately, this episode sucks, with a rather weak internal conflict from Twilight.

"Look Before You Sleep" -- This episode honestly forms a good chunk of my bias against the Applejack/Rarity dynamic. I just cannot stand to watch them bicker, and Rarity's prissiness, in particular is utterly insufferable in not only this episode but most episodes like this.

Season 2

"The Mysterious Mare-Do-Well" -- This episode has a mean-spirited tone which I find largely repulsive. The way it ceaselessly humiliates Dash feels pointless enough without the episode's frequently noted hypocrisy, and with that it's utterly unbearable.

"It's About Time" -- I've managed to justify Twilight's absurd leaps in logic here by accepting that she's sleep deprived, but this is still a tiresome, hollow rehash of "Lesson Zero" which has no idea what made that episode work. Irritating to watch.

Season 3

"Games Ponies Play" -- Mostly worthless. A single joke stretched out to an episode's length, and so poorly written that just mentioning Ms. Harshwhinny's name would cut the episode in half at least.

"Magical Mystery Cure" -- There are so many reasons why I hate this episode that listing them would take up half the page. The songs sound nice and the animation is pretty but I despise every single other detail of this miserable, miserable finale.

Season 4

Oh dear.

"Princess Twilight Sparkle" -- Overstuffed and wildly misguided, seemingly unwilling to sit still, filled with poor decisions, puts its cliffhanger in a completely irrelevant flashback, and has that awful Tree of Harmony which the show blissfully forgot about.

"Bats!" -- That opening scene where Applejack is supposed to be tormenting Fluttershy seems more like an attempt to demonize her perfectly valid perspective, which says a lot about the episode's failure to actually express its themes competently. And then the stinger basically undoes the conclusion of the Flutterbat conflict, invalidating that part of the episode. But at least the goddamn fruit bats get to stay!

"Simple Ways" -- Repeats one of the biggest mistakes of "Look Before You Sleep": Rarity is absolutely insufferable in this. It's not worth watching Rarity embarrass herself for the admittedly solid moral.

"Twilight Time" -- Watching the CMC be completely self-centred and exploit their friendship with Twilight - to the detriment of her privacy - just to be "in" with the "cool kids?" No thank you.

"Somepony to Watch Over Me" -- Gives Applejack an absurd personality and then exaggerates it to the point where it's intolerable. There's no subtlety here. Nothing to ground Applejack's overprotectiveness. Instead, we get grating, unfunny absurdity which goes directly counter to her character.

Season 5

Oh dear.

"Appleoosa's Most Wanted" -- Gets cutie marks wrong. Like, really wrong. If you can get a "bad luck" cutie mark which you don't even understand, if it can just be thrust on you at any random moment, what control to ponies have over their own lives? I'm sure the show didn't mean to be so goddamn depressing.

"The Lost Treasure of Griffonstone" -- Can't quite put my finger on why this one is so draining for me, but I think it's just that the setting is so bleak and yet so wasted. The griffon backstory is shallow and half-assed, the clear problems here are ignored in favour of a simple friendship problem, and the episode ends by implying the entire griffon civilization would be fine if they would just make friends, which is insufferable enough even if you ignore that the griffons are saved by adopting pony values.

"Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep?" -- Hollow action, lazy comedy, tedious references, and an offensive ending which has the gall to just tell Luna to "get over" her obvious psychological issues. How about no?

"Made in Manehattan" -- That sequence in the middle where Applejack wears herself out putting together the stage, just for it to fall apart, is quite possibly the bleakest sequence in this entire show, and I never want to endure it again.

"The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows" -- About as worthless as "Games Ponies Play," but at least there's not some easy solution. Still a single joke dragged out for a whole episode, and it quite possibly has even less variety.

"What About Discord?" -- Seems intent on having its cake and eating it too. For some reason seems to think that leaving us just as much in the dark as Twilight won't be extremely annoying, but also seems unable to decide if Twilight is entirely right about Discord being up to no good or if she's overreacting. Inept.

Seconded. I've enjoyed every single episode of MLP to date. Sure there are some episodes that are clearly better than others, but it would never bring me to the point where I couldn't watch it again. The following is just a list of episodes that I tend to avoid. I can still watch them, but i'd prefer a different episode over these  :orly::

  • Season 1: Boast Busters, Look Before You Sleep, The Show Stoppers, Over a Barrel, Owl's Well that Ends Well.
  • Season 2: The Cutie Pox, Mare Do Well, A Friend in Deed (minus the fantastic Smile Song :pinkie:).
  • Season 3: One Bad Apple, Spike at Your Service, Games Ponies Play.
  • Season 4: Rainbow Falls, It Ain't Easy Being Breezies.
  • Season 5: Princess Spike, Party Pooped, The Hooffields and McColts
  • Season 6: Applejack's Day Off, 28 Pranks Later.
