Don't need any special bun. The average bun will do. Though, if there was some kind of cheese-encrusted bun, I'd go for that in a heartbeat! 
The dog needs to be a meat dog. It can be pork or beef, but it needs to be real meat. (Bonus points if it's cheese filled.)
The must have condiments are Cheese and Chili. Any chili will do, but I prefer a mix of beef and bean chili. American or Cheddar is the cheese of choice, as long as it's good and melted. Cheese sauce also works.
Additional condiments that I'd like to have are chopped onions, regular or caramelized; and bacon, preferably broken up into chunks.

... Did I mention cheese?  That's kind of an important detail.

I absolutely love chili dogs, probably to an unhealthy extent. Just something about the mix of bread, the hotdog, and chili is so good. Onions are good too. And if there's no chili I'll usually just do mustard, onions (if available), and that's it. Simple and delicious.
