spoiler I don't see how Chrysalis thought her plan was going to work

They did get suspicious. That is how Starlight got the whole rescue party going. But if she had not though, they had options.

A. High tale it out of there if things got hairy. I mean they could easily have set up suitable defenses to seal them up and protect their hive.

B. Hold everyone off long enough to keep replacing more and more ponies of power and influence.

C. Threats. She literally had everyone of importance in her grasp... threatening to kill them all would do wonders to keep invaders out and put Equestria under her control.

It is actually kind of sad the changeling kingdom was invaded and conquered by a panicking unicorn, a charlatan, a klutzy draconequus and a timid reject with not enough magic between them to light a match. Of course if they weren't we would have had the worst series finale in history.

It's not a series finale. Season 7 has been confirmed.

I never said it was. I was making fun of it.

The joke is: it would have been a series finale if literally all the main characters were murdered by Chrysalis.

I don't think it would have been too difficult for other ponies around Equestria to realize something is wrong, but there aren't really any ponies in a position to do anything about it. Honestly, Daring Do is probably the best pony for the job. She's usually out of the picture though. If Daring Do teamed up with Thorax, they could have ended it much more professionally than Starlight. I question if Starlight was even necessary. I suppose she does have that silver tongue, inciting an entire species to commit high treason over a few honeyed words and temptations. But that entire speech would have been nothing if Thorax hadn't been the demonstration. Discord literally didn't need to be there. Trixie's ninja tools wouldn't have been necessary if Trixie hadn't been there in the first place.

Those three choices make a lot of sense. Once everypony realizes that the Royal Family and Elements of Harmony are Changeling fakes and realize they've been kidnapped, the Royal Guard and Wonderbolts would have mobilized to try and rescue them alongside Starlight and her team. Chrysalis could then have the hive sealed up to protect her captives, and even threaten to harm them if Equestria did not back down and surrender to her for their safety and well-being. As long as Chrysalis had the Royal Family and Elements of Harmony as her captives, she would have leverage to prevent any attempts at rescuing them or rebelling against her after she's taken over the country.

It makes you wonder if the Changelings were as threatening as the rest of Equestria believed. If an unlikely group could sneak into the hive and end up destroying the source of the magic block, just about anyone could've done the same thing.

I was going to say that Chrysalis probably expected the replacements would do a better job with their disguises, but the argument that she could hold the princesses and Shining Armour hostage holds a lot of water. Still, she doesn't seem to have done enough to make sure the replacements were well-informed, and she really ought to have expected Starlight to be more of an issue, especially given that the changelings even took Spike. Then again, she seems pretty stubborn and arrogant, so those tactical issues aren't exactly out-of-character for her.

It's possible only those adept in Friendship was probably better at detecting the smallest of details in change of other's personalities. I would say the changelings really did their research of who they were impersonating it actually makes me think if they have some kind of mind copying or draining magic as well that let's them impersonate that pony they replace because how would they know all about that about those ponies? This was obviously a very large group effort orchestrated by Chrysalis. Chrysalis is no doubt the best villain in orchestrating group actions.

Also they got that magic nullifying stone with such a ridiculous range.

Her plan did work, really. It was just canceled by her comrades. If Queen Chrysalis LITERALLY STOPPED STARLIGHT AND THORAX FROM TALKING, the entire plan would of worked. Chrysalis is an overpowered foe, especially in Fiendship is magic.
