gaming Losing interest in modern gaming

Hi guys. Today want to talk about problems with modern games. Personally, I've been stucked with Nintendo for years (since 2007 to be precised) because... ah... I don't like the direction  Videogames took since the advent of Ps3 and 360... too many sandbox, too many shooters and too many sport games, and honestly those kinds of games are so boring to me that drives me to sleep (literally: when I've seen my cousin playing Uncharted 4 at his home the other day, I've almost fallen asleep...) and now Nintendo aside, about the 90-95% of modern videogames are of that kind. Not mentioning that I also hate Miyazaki's games because their excessively high difficulty and the fact that a single mistake could make a full hour of gameplay completely pointless gives me a lot of anxiety while playing them (man, I got anxious when I did my universitary exams, all I need it's getting anxious while playing videogames....) To give you an idea of the games I like, here's the ones I'm waiting for right now: Shantae 1/2 Genie Hero, Zelda Breath of the Wild, Yooka Laylee, Freedom Planet 2 and maybe Bloodstained. I also don't mind hack'n slash (althought I hate God of War because Kratos...) and RPGs (althought I hate the Witcher because its sexual contents), which is why I've appreciated  Bayonetta 1 and 2, Skyrim, and Devil May Cry 1 and 3 in past. Sadly after Nintendo's fall lately (and I've no interest in Switch at least for now,  as most of the games are going to be ports of Wii U games I already own, except the new 3d Mario), these kind of games are going to be extincted soon and the shooters and sport games will soon monopolize the market (actually they already have done it....). For a while I gave my hopes to indies, but now even those have fallen and I can't find something interesting aside the games I've mentioned before. I've dropped modern games since June when I've made my last purchases (Kirby Planet Robobot and Fire Emblem Fates) and now I just live in replays of games I've finished in past in rotation, and I've also downloaded the MAME with a full hundred of Arcade games of the 90s. Truth being told.... I don't think it's bad actually, I'm actually enjoying living of my old memories (remote and recent ones), and I'm having fun with them maybe more that would have had with modern ones so I don't feel bad for having quitted almost completely modern gaming.

In any case, there's anyone else here who has this feeling as well, or you love the new direction videogames took? Also if you know any other upcoming games other than the ones I've mentioned that I might like, I'd be happy to take some advice.

I also recently got tired of where modern gaming is at. It is a mix of too much flash and what feels like too little substance lately, and I am just not feeling most of them. Also, a lot of games these days are shipping with so many bugs and issues with the expectation being you can just patch them later...  and that just strikes me as sloppy and negligent. I mean if a company cannot be bothered to give me their best work, and to give me a completely finished and working product, why should I be bothered to care about it at all? Obviously there are still a lot of good games out there coming out, but currently I have just become burned out on it all and have decided stepping back was the right choice for me. Instead I have decided to revisit old games in an attempt to spark exactly what it is I enjoyed about gaming to begin with, replaying old games I used to own and love, as well as old games I just missed or never got a chance to play the first time around. So far I have been having a lot of fun.

I've developed a taste for gaming 'behind the curve,' so to speak - avoiding newer games in favour of older ones that I missed at the time. I do it for financial reasons - one need only compare the cost of Civ V to Civ VI to see the incentive for that (yes, maybe VI is better... but I'll get it in a few years) but it also means that you don't need as powerful a computer and get to cherry-pick from the best games from a particular year. It doesn't work so well for multiplayer-focused games, but I don't tend to play those.

The thing about modern games is that they're more focused on online gameplay or working servers and not putting a lot of attention on the single player gameplay or plots, if you go back 10 years ago, the online was more of an addition while the gameplay was more of a priority and the good thing about old games are they're very inexpensive and they're fun to play with, you just got to make sure you can find it and they're in good condition.

I think the only series that focuses on single player right now is the Fallout series, it's probably a good thing that they don't have online which means they can put more attention on the gameplay rather than focusing on something that's going to be dead in a decade. This is what annoys me about current games.

Well, despite my love for the industry, I do not regularly play video games. And I'm rather picky about what I play. Usually FPS games (Halo and Call of Duty), because I just grew up with them. Really, the only recent game I got that I like is Fallout 4.

The only games coming up that I have any interest in are the 2017 Sonic games.

The point of games SHOULD be to have fun with other people. If you're not having fun, take a break.

Board games do a better job at this goal in my opinion.

Sounds like you might want to pay a visit to gog.com.  That site is basically a repository for old but very well designed games.  My personal recommendation is Master of Magic, but there are a lot of good games on that site.

Beyond that there are a lot of interesting a unique games that have been released more recently.  Have you tried Kerbal Space Program?  How about Cities: Skylines?  Or RimWorld?  Or FTL?  These are all off the beaten path and they are all very good.

Modern games are made in certain genres because it's the one that's popular, simple as that, and I have to say modern games have in fact become more diverse than their counterparts before. Honestly, if you're getting a bad taste from modern games, you're not searching hard enough.

Games made by Paradox Interactive (and one of them published by them) are a good example. Crusader Kings, Europe Universalis, Hearts of Iron, Stellaris, and Cities: Skylines (published) are well made and fun to play. The Sid Meier Civilization series is another good 4X. Arma series and the Tom Clancy franchise are good FPS games, too. I've also been playing The Long Dark recently, which is a realistic survival game and really hard to get off. And there's Starbound (from the ones who made Stardew Valley and Risk of Rain, no less!), basically Terraria's younger brother. (Then again Chucklefish's founder formerly worked in Re-Logic, the ones who made Terraria.)

I can mention some others, like Kerbal Space Program, the Fallout series, XCOM, and Overwatch. Again, depends on where you look. Those Call of Duty and Ubisoft games aren't necessarily going to give you a good impression.  ;)

i think i am too. keep looking through steam wanting a new game and theres barely anything that catches my eye anymore unless its a Bethesda game or anything new in the Assassin's Creed series (im a massive AC fan).

quite a lot of the time I revert back to playing older consoles. I almost always come back to Gamecube and N64 when im bored. Denz had the PS2 on last night playing FF12, think hes in the same boat.

when its not steam games, we do tend to play  a lot of WiiU games, mostly because of the local multiplayer and co-op it offers in 90% of its games - which is something i really miss in modern gaming. I loved having friends over to play games and tourneys with, but a lot of games these days you need a separate machine and internet connection to play together. takes the social out of it imo unless you live alone.

plus these new games are pretty short. which is why i favour the Bethesda games, I love the free roam, take you time adventuring of those games, but im a little disappointed when I can finish main storylines in games like within a few hours or within a week. Assassins Creed is the only series where I take the time to actually collect everything and unlock everything on the side because i get through the story so quick... mostly because I adore the stories and want to know whats next asap.

I generally agree with this.

It's a golden age where the tools to make games have never been more accessible, and the platforms to design games for have never been so diverse, and a broader array of people are playing and getting games made for them...

but that said, there are more hobbies in the world than video gaming.  And I don't think it's unreasonable to want to branch out from that, or take a break from video gaming.  There are limitations to what it can do, and other hobbies can fill in the gaps.

Aye, I hear you.

I still love Warcraft & its maker Blizzard, but its wearing on me. I feel bad for abandoning a world that meant so much to me. Don't get me wrong, I love a game that makes me feel important, that i'm making my own decisions & changing the world around me to better help those that need it, but there is a limit to that. There's being a protagonist and then there's being constantly told that the world revolves around you and your efforts are the only thing driving the story forward & keeping the world as you know it from being blown to smithereens is you, Mr. Commander. That's a bit much stress.

I need story. Recently got into the Phoenix Wright series. There, you're a hero, but a falliable one at that. You may be defending the helpless but everyone around will never skip a beat to rag on you for being the bumbling oaf that is clearly just trying every option they can & hoping vainly that it'll work!

That's the trouble with modern gaming. Is that it's all about competition. Stuff like LOL or Warcraft is all about PVP or killing some baddies, the crafting of war and I hate the notion of intentionally hurting others for your own personal gain.

....though admittedly, I did love leveling my skinning as a druid in warcraft. Fluttering around in birdform and swooping down on fresh kills to flail the hides off to make handfuls of leather to smash together until I made suitable gear. Hee!

But its a varying scale. About now all I've got for gaming is Hearthstone and while its a cardgame, it certainly isn't relaxing. ONLY way to progress there is by butting heads with online players who always seem to have better luck or a better grasp on how to use their cards despite it looking like they're just spewing cards out without any heed. I can't PLAY the gosh-darn game if you keep preventing me from playing my cards! Bah!!

                                           I HATE winning...

Beatings & Salivations Everybeing!   Creativity is something blatantly important to me as is no doubt evidenced by the 28 OCs I have posted here of the some forty plus I have, they're linked altogether at the bottom of my About Me page in my Profile & I would deeply cherish anything you wish to say about them! Among which of those I am proudest most of is my Draconequusona, His/My Ask Thread  and my Hydra, Gallimaufry or "Mauf" and their own Ask Thread!  Either way, sufficed to say, I am quite confident I have more OCs than you! Crazier to! Do You have a tatzelpony?! No, I rather think you don't! Hew-Hew-hew!
