Do you take any? I read mixed views about them. I take one of these at night (if I remember)

I don't know how well they work really. I haven't stopped taking them at any point to see how I feel without them. I've been taking those for over a year and can't really remember if I felt shittier before then or not.

Well, I'm convinced. At least as far as the One-A-Day multivitamins go. I started taking them last year, and quickly switched to the ones with extra Vitamin C.

Ever since I switched to the ones with extra Vitamin C, I haven't ever really got sick. I can still get allergies - I had a bout of allergies when I moved, but those allergies are a spec of dust compared to what I was frequently dealing with before I started taking the multivitamins. Over the last 10 years or so my colds gradually started getting really bad, to the point where when I'd get them my nose would get so stopped up that it was really bad, and I couldn't breathe out of my nose at all. When I tried to sleep I literally felt like I was suffocating.

Once I started taking the vitamins with extra Vitamin C these horrible colds which the doctors called sinus infections vanished. I'd get them multiple times throughout the year, and now... They don't happen (it has been over a year and a half, now). It's great, and I now won't miss a single day in taking them. I also have added fiber supplements, but I don't think they've really done anything for me... I've had doctors recommend them to me and tell me to keep on taking the One-A-Day. I don't really know where the jury is on these things, but as for me, I'm a believer. Trust me, if they got rid of your sinus infections you couldn't just ignore it.

To be honest, and it's probably a bad habit, I'll occasionally just raid my family's stash of vitamins and supplements, take some of whatever's there, and then do that a week or so later. I doubt I'll get vitamin poisoning, telling by how my body is basically constantly deficient of a fair amount of nutrients (one of the benefits of high metabolism [this is sarcasm]). Also, I find the policy of "if it tastes better than normal, then you probably need it" as an indicator of what nutrients I'm lacking. I'm just too lazy to actually put together some routine for it all.

long story short its a waste of money

your body can only absorb so much of something the rest just gets dumped i cant remember what they told us in med but something like 10%-20% of vitamin supplements are absorbed the rest is just urinated out they will even say on the bottle not to rely on them solely to get nutrition

if you need more magnesium eat Almonds if you need more Calcium drink milk etc etc

supplements are more for the sick and vegetarians/vegans who require that kind of thing because they have no meat in their diet the average person doesn't really need them

myself i take Gatorade and Musashi lean but that's only because i naturally don't eat a lot and have a very low fat low salt diet but i work out sometimes twice daily so i need to supplement what i lack from my diet plus the Musashi helps recovery times and the Gatorade is really only because a medic told me to drink a bottle every two days according to a blood test i have almost no salt in my diet

This is actually true. Furthermore, placebo-based experiments have shown little correlation between taking supplements and actually reducing the risk of disease than simply eating food with appropriate nutrients. If you're already eating a normal diet rich in fruits and vegetables, you don't need supplements at all. And if you have an unhealthy diet, supplements sure aren't good alternatives. Supplements can help if you already have a special health condition or vitamin deficiency not related to your diet.

I like supplements,

Many of the anti-supplement folks will tell yah that there are cheaper natural solutions, and I  completely agree! but at the same time I also see the usefulness of supplements. I'm no longer the kind of guy who wants to schedule his every waking diet to reach peak performance, While I still count Protein and Calories,  Vitamins and Minerals are just going to be left to pills.  Mostly because I'd rather take a supplement everyday knowing it'll probably balance everything out than having to make myself eat things I don't particularly want to eat.

To me, Supplements are kinda like the Consoles of Dieting. o_o

I'm not vegetarian (anymore) but I don't eat an awful lot of meat. I choked on bacon fat when I was a kid and I'm always scared of eating certain meats. I have an overbite and think that's why I find it difficult to chew. I'm fine with chicken and tender meats, though. I easily go a few days without eating meat. I think I would lack iron if I didn't take supplements.

  • 3 years later...

I take a tiny bit of Melatonin t help me sleep, Niacin to combat my developing heart concerns and occasionally Potassium, which helps my restless legs. That’s about it right now.

It is important to get your vitamins. If you don't get them from eating fruit, I recommend getting supplements.

I did eat vitamin supplements as a kid, because I didn't eat much fruit. Guess what happened? Nothing. But if I hadn't eaten those, who knows!?
