Rainblow H. Ash 5,091 December 5, 2016 Share December 5, 2016 That's just it though: since they pick up everything with their mouths, they probably have ridiculously strong immune systems at this rate. I doubt they'll get sick unless they pick up a pile of dung with their mouth. 2 #bringbackmerriwetherwillaims

I like to think that their biology evolved an enzyme that is is uber strong and devastated any pathogens that would enter their mouth. The design for their tools is all wrong! That's not what a horse-pencil would look like!! Unfortunately, in the Great Equestria Flood all the plans for the tools of antiquity were destroyed causing widespread panic. A council was quickly assembled to engineer the next generation of tools. Unfortunately that Council was exclusively populated by Unicorns. Blame the unicorn exceptionalism that ran rampant at the time.
Ganondorf8 11,720 December 5, 2016 Share December 5, 2016 Pegasus and Earth ponies have no other choice but to use their mouths since hooves lack fingers with which to grip onto certain items--I am aware that they can hold onto certain things yet the writers never explain this. Unicorns and Alicorns can easily use their magic to hold things for them without the need for their mouths.

Jeric 46,884 December 5, 2016 Share December 5, 2016 Not even the unicorns have thumbs though? Who needs thumbs when you can make physics and gravity bend to you will. Though, their lack of thumbs also means "this guy/the girl" jokes never existed for Ponies. Fair trade off still, but it's close.
silvadel 1,393 December 5, 2016 Share December 5, 2016 (edited) Either they do not have the same kinds of bacteria that we have, or their saliva protects them. In the former, a human going to Equestria could introduce all kinds of bad things into their ecosystem. In the latter, their spit could be toxic to humans. ---- As for the pictures above -- the most painful one is apple bloom. Have you ever held a metal barrel hoop? I certainly wouldn't want to manipulate one with my mouth. Edited December 5, 2016 by silvadel Silvadel, the Pegasus of Insight.

Driz 1,552 December 6, 2016 Share December 6, 2016 For the record, I unconsciously hold random tools with my mouth when I don't have any hands free, most likely because I saw them doing that on the show and... I found it to be... cute. But yeah, I shouldn't do that myself if I ain't an animated pony on TV. It's an unhealthy habit of mine. GrimGrimoire 4,973 December 6, 2016 Share December 6, 2016 So all the fans of Applejack who truly love her now know her kisses would taste like farm tools. I am less interested though in the hygienic effects overall as i am in how they don't have more of them walking around with neck injuries considering they build houses, barns and cottages using tools held in their mouths. Just imagining the motion of trying to pound in nails with a hammer in my mouth caused a chiropractor to send me a message informing me of their prices and hours. ~No profound statement needed~
ARagY 1,153 December 6, 2016 Share December 6, 2016 No, because that's how they've (presumably) always done it. They would have evolved a way to process any foreign harmful substances that enter their body through the mouth over a few million years, surely (or they'd be dead). Other thing is animals (including humans) can already do this. But you don't, and so guess who is going to have a bad time when they try the first time? 1 To each their own

Kyoshi Frost Wolf 42,202 December 7, 2016 Share December 7, 2016 They do seem to have some crazy strong jaws though. To be able to hold things like that and also, writing with your mouth. That is skill. That could be why they do it. Like "Look at what we ponies can do, you humans can't do this sh*t." Which, most of us can't. The ponies win again. I point all of this out because others have already stated how their immune systems are probably godlike. Redeem me into childhood. Show me myself without a shell. Lucky Star 972 December 7, 2016 Share December 7, 2016 I say it only makes their immune systems stronger! Also, let us think of the common dog who puts everything in their mouth. Dogs can share toys and we don't ever seem to worry about them making each other sick. Why would this be the case with the ponies? If humans started doing this out of the blue then we might have some troubles since out immune systems wouldn't be used to constantly coming into contact with outside germs in this manner. But we'd adapt eventually and out immune systems would become stronger. Just like the ponies in the show seem to have done. Or have always done. I dunno. Unfortunately, in the Great Equestria Flood all the plans for the tools of antiquity were destroyed causing widespread panic. A council was quickly assembled to engineer the next generation of tools. Lil Pip 775 December 8, 2016 Share December 8, 2016 (edited) Well dogs don't get sick from even eating cat poop, so they probably just evolved differently to resist more bacteria, or their natural magic reduces sickness. Reason why dogs can though is because dogs are like vultures in the sense they can eat some rotten things, but dogs not as much as vultures.
