technology software suggestions?

ok, so I haven't had internet in FOREVER, so I'm pretty disconnected. Literally. Can anyone offer any suggestions on what software to ditch and update or replace with new, modern ones? (I'm working with an equally outdated Windows Vista, here)

I have an outdated version of Adobe Flash (18 NPAPI)/ 20 AvtiveX, Avira Antivirus, HitmanPro 3.7, Compatibility pack for '07 Office, AVS Audio Editor, Bonjour, Java 7 Update 1, LibreOffice 4.3.7.2, LightScribe 1.14.25.1, MalwareBytes 2.1.6.1022, Firefox 3.90, to name a few

halp?

Are you asking for general software recommendations or specific software recommendations considering you've mentioned software you have but only a couple.

Also upgrade from Windows Vista definitely, to Windows 7 or higher

little of both. Any suggestions from anyone who knows more about it than me, would be aces. XD like I said, I've been offline for quite a long time (and never really was the most tech saavy). -_-;

is there a free way to do that?

There may be but I wouldn't go looking for one since a lot of software that claims to update all your software is a virus unless of course you know it's safe.

The best thing to do would be to go to the website you downloaded the software and simply download the latest version if there is one.

A lot of your software looks fine, just needs some housekeeping. If you don't have an iPhone or iPod, feel free to get rid of Bonjour. Flash is pretty much deprecated at this point, you can probably uninstall that; most websites now offer HTML5 players. If you don't need to burn any CDs, you can toss LightScribe too. You might want to have a look at malware bytes and compare it to Hitman Pro, I'm not familiar with Hitman Pro, but it might or might not be more effective.

You'll probably want to update Firefox (it's now on version 50.) LibreOffice also needs to be updated; it's on version 5.2. Avira is still a fine AV, but they've probably released a new client. Java is on version 9 now I think.

Running Vista is still fine-ish for now, but you'll probably want to upgrade it to something else soon (either Linux or Windows 10). Microsoft is ending extended support for it in about three months, any bugs and security problems found after that time will go unfixed. Firefox is also planning to stop producing new builds of Firefox and give XP and Vista users a static release for sometime this year which only receives security updates. You probably don't want Windows 7 at this point though, it's going to be in the same spot in 3 years and replay the slow and painful death of Windows XP all over again.

HTML5 is a browser technology already baked into the major browsers, it's not something that needs to be downloaded. Windows 10 is my recommendation over 7 which requires 16-32GBs of hard drive space and 2GBs of memory. There's this tool Microsoft released to see if your system is capable of upgrading to it, but I don't know if it supports Vista. You could also try burning a CD of Ubuntu Linux (one of the more user-friendly variants) and try booting into LiveCD mode to see if it supports your hardware. Obviously that option takes a bit of involvement, but you can effectively try out running Linux on your machine without touching your hard drive and existing files. Linux normally can't run .exe files, but a fair bit of your software (LibreOffice, Firefox and Java) are well supported and there are pretty solid equivalents for many of the others.

looks like i can't get upgrades to 10 without Windows 7 or higher. Boo. ): So I guess I'll have to look into investing in a brand spanking new pc? as you can assume, it's all pretty outdated- big, bulky tower, low res monitor I happened to find at Goodwill (I only just recently got rid of this insanely massive and heavy, blocky monitor), outdated plug ins and software. pretty crappy, really. Modern Micro. PC's are running w10, or something higher? I'm kinda on low income, so the cheaper solutions (preferably, if I can somehow upgrade for free, as far as software goes), the better.

I'd be too afraid to try the Linux suggestion, since I wouldn't know anything about what I'm doing
