Trixie's magical potential

Before today's episodes I kinda just assumed that Trixie was ultimately a Unicorn of average potential, who was really good at a few things. But now it looks more like Trixie IS in fact a very high level Unicorn... she's just one who is poorly trained and who's ego holds her back from really advancing outside of her field, until now that she has a friend/mentor in Starlight. Trixie in a short time learned Transmutation, Teleportation. Pretty advanced magic and far beyond what we see average level unicorns be able to do.

So what do you guys think? Is Trixie in fact a very powerful unicorn who just never had the proper mentor to reach her potential?

Quite some time ago, I surmised that Trixie's personality flaws helped to define her ceiling. To be able to grow, you have to understand you don't know everything. Trixie never appeared to be good pupil material.

I guessed she had some potential because of the light bending spell she used on Rainbow Dash that turned her speed trail into a physical restraint. She wasn't just an illusionist. Its nice seeing her move closer to her potential.  Still, I have a hard time seeing her at Twilight and Starlight levels of magical maturity, so I don't expect to see that happen anytime soon.

It was pretty impressive how the first time she performed a teleportation spell, she managed to teleport that gigantic crystal table pretty far away.

So i guess she does have some pretty good magical potential.

Didn't you guys get the memo? There was a sale on destinies and now everything can become a powerful X. No time to fill all those annoying backstory papers? Done! The good news is that the prices on old and eldritch magic are going through the roof along with sales of pristine antiheroes. The bad news is that the trade is usually done through barter.

I like to think that in the term of abilities it depends on what you are willing to pursue to reach your goal, we see that the ponies who pursued magic and were willing to go through the studies of spells and stuff are quite powerful  with magic since that is their chosen field  and what they chose to pursue on.

On the other hand we see Trixie whose pursue wasnt on obtaining raw magical abilities since what she was trying to accomplish was just simple illusionary magic for entertainment purposes though i believe she could've been different if her chosen path would've been somewhat similar to the ponies who are strong with magic through  learning to control and manifest it.

We see that the great magicians are willing to use what they have learned and with that knowledge  they are able to adapt their magic in these different situations and use it  depending on the situation  which i think is the key of obtaining your potential and progressing forward as a magician.

So as you use your magic on the subject you are passionate about your abilities are at its peak. If your passion happens to be magic itself it is kinda obvious that your abilities would be above average ponies since they arent that passionate about magic so they use their magic as they see fit. Its not like they didnt have the same  or similar potential in them compared to the ones who chose to pursue magic. it is just that thei chose different path.

I dunno... I always assumed she was just am amazing stage magician and that unicorns were either born with powerful magic, or they were not. It actually begs a lot of questions. Are all unicorns able to do high level magic if properly trained and mentored? Is it based upon desire and effort, or is it already locked inside and just needing to be shown how to be properly harnessed? Why can Trixie (as much as i adore her and love her) who seems to spend more time being a braggart and using sleight of hand, cast powerful magic, while a pony like Sunburst who spent who knows how long at the school for gifted unicorns be completely unable?

On one hand this sort of bugs me, on the other Trixie 2nd best pone so I don't care.

It could be either way, but she does seem to have skilled potential, even before. I don't ghink she will be as powerful as Starlight or Twi, but she can become a decent magic user, after all, her special talent does have to do with magic.

I'm no longer convinced that "magical potential" is a thing in this show, even considering Twilight's extraordinary story. Between Starlight and Trixie, I'm starting to believe that practice, knowledge, and training amount for most of a unicorn's prowess, and most unicorns simply choose to specialize, not wholly unlike how I shy away from math and athletics. So Starlight is simply teaching her techniques which she was never able to figure out before. This doesn't seem wholly consistent with Twilight's outburst as a filly, but in all honesty, I kinda like it more. The less this show ascribes to a pony's birth, the more I enjoy its mythology.
