Need some tech help (Picking computer parts)

Welp, it’s slowly coming time for me to consider a new computer build. My current computer is an awesome, strong freaking dinosaur of a build with an old i7-920, 6gigs of ram, a 1kw PSU, 5870 gpu (downgraded cause my 7970 went kaput), and a nice little 1TB HD. As said, it’s slowly coming time for me to consider a new build since my computer is showing its age and need an upgrade, due to all parts being from 2009.

At this point, I’m so out of the PC parts game I feel like I don’t know what to do or where to go for info. I’ve researched new stuff, looked up specs, etc…, and, again, I just feel like I’m on info overload.

I’d like to nail a 5930k, but they are going out fast, and, though the 8700k seems nice, the reviews about thermal issues ticks me off to no end, not to mention the limiting of the PCI-e lanes and memory channels.

In terms of what I’d like to do with the system, I’d like to game @ 1080p (minimum), but I want to go beyond and into the 2k and 4k gaming stuff. Also, down the road, I’d like to use it for potential AI deep learning since I’m trying to get back into computer program, along with streaming/video making for gaming.

In terms of a budget, I’ve saved up and can shell out around $3k, but can push it to $3.5k if need be, but that would have to include taxes, S&H, etc….

Here's what I'm thinking right now for a setup:

Think about a 5930k or go with the 6800kchipset using this for a Motherboard.

Going with the Thermaltake 900 series case (also tempted to build my own case into a new desk I'm wanting to build)

I'm gonna go with 4 sticks of 8gig ram for 32gb ram total and a 1kw PSU.

GPU wise, I'm torn since the Vegas look nice, on paper, but I'm tempted to go with a 1080ti Hybrid Nvidia card like this one here from EVGA.

Anyways, up for suggestions and ideas for any parts.

Right now I’m thinking a 5930k or go into the 6800k chipset with

Wow - way more PC than I would ever use. Anyhow, I don't know how you could go wrong with your choices. What game(s) are you into for that setup?

Yeah if you're going to be running extremely big and advanced AI programs then maybe you should get the Intel I9 CPU that has the most cores. So it would be the most expensive CPU that would cost up to $1600 but it's worth it in the long run plus it's also very good for gaming at the same time as if you got a Zeon CPU then that would be really good for your AI programs but it wouldn't work that well for gaming. Plus try to get the absolute best GPU that's available currently as that will get you quite a distance but still your GPU would still undoubtedly start to become slightly obsolete with new games as soon as 4-6 years. Plus a good idea is to get both a 2TB HD and a 250GB SSD for your PC and that way you can install the OS and startup programs onto the SSD so it makes booting up extremely fast! Anyways our current PC has the best consumer hardware available that was available in early 2013 and even though the GPU is an Nvidia GTX GE-FORCE 660 it's still starting to become obsolete with modern games even though it's just under five years old! :)

I made this parts list only following some of the parts you specified. The biggest changes was replacing the X99 CPUs with a Ryzen 7 1800X. This sub-$350 CPU will demolish them. Even with pairing it with a beefy X370 motherboard will help come in at just under $2,500. Well, you wasn't exactly specific on the components other than the case and GPU. Also never did specify any software or peripherals, but I assume you have those taken care of. I also swapped out the 1000 watt PSU for an 850 watt because having such a PSU is really unnecessary. As for storage, again, not exactly specific. I'm just assuming you intend to build an all-new system.

If you absolutely wanted to go all the way to $3,000, you can have this X399 monster. You'll have all of the PCI-E lanes.

I was really digging what you made except using AMD. On this kind of budget the AMD allows them to beef up on other parts, but overall a LOT of programs are made for Intel and only Intel, so it might be wise to not use AMD in the long run, and although it BLEEDS money I would have to agree with Techno on the i9.

If the thread starter doesn't care Intel/AMD this system you made is a total monster. If they do, Ryzen might not be a good idea

AMD have said that they will support the AM4 socket until 2020. I imagine they'll do the same for TR4 as well. Intel meanwhile will introduce a new CPU line, chipset, and socket type at least twice on the mainstream during that time, and maybe a "revision" ala 2011-v3.

My issue with Intel is that, apart from using toothpaste as TIM, it costs so much money. You get a little extra performance, but is the extra cost really worth it?

Thanks for the insight all.  I've thought about the Corei9 stuff, but I'd like to stay away from those expensive monsters, if possible.  In terms of storage, I'm definitely going for an SSD, but I don't know if I should go for the new stuff that fits into the PCI-e slots or stick with the classic SSD stuff for right now.  Have to say, if I had the money and the expertise in programming (rusty as heck in C++), I'd go for the new Nvidia card that came out, the Titan V, but that's way, way, WAY outta my budget.

I like that added 2TB storage drive - why not throw in another and set them up as a RAID 1 for all your personal files and stuff.
