spoiler Is the school a leap in logic?

I don't know, and hopefully School Daze will explain things better, but something about "The cutie map got bigger, let's open a school!" seems like a leap in logic to me.

Let's apply a reasoning validity test to determine if the school is logical or not applying induction.

  • Map changes to depict areas outside the borders of Pony dominated Equestria - the direct observation.
  • Twilight recalls that prior iterative changes of the map have signified shirts in mission dynamics - the observed pattern
  • Twilight observes the changes and pattern and posits that the map is changing the current paradigm by adding a new variable it wants the Mane characters to act on  - Hypothesis
  • Twilight believes that these changes tell her that the map wants them to extend their mission to these new areas - Theory

Let's test the validity of the school as a solution

  • Conclusion validity test - Is there a relationship between establishing a school and expanding friendship beyond Equestria?
  1. Problem: traveling too far outside constantly would be inefficient; strong opportunity cost present.
  2. Solution: instead of traveling to each territory, invite delegates to learn friendship and have them pass on what they have learned.
  • Causal relationship test - Does establishing the school lead to the opportunity to spread friendship beyond Equestria?
  1. Lessons would be learned and applied during the delagation's enrollment
  2. Instructions would be given to pass this information on
  3. Active theory is that by passing on these lessons, new concepts will take root in these territories spreading the magic of friendship.

As you can see, there is no leap in logic. Hope this helps. Whether the school is the most effective solution, I cannot say. Multiple logical and reasonable solutions can exist independent of each other, which is what your question was.

I'm annoyed that yet another plot point had to be initiated by the map doing something inexplicable, and since I have no reason to believe Twilight actually understands it, I don't understand why she consistently makes decisions based on it. That said, if she perceives it as an expansion of the territory she needs to spread friendship to, I can see why she might think inviting all those people to her friendship school would be the most efficient course of action.

I won't argue with the logic begind the school, but I do believe the schoo and the table have lead to lazy writing in general.

Originally we were given reasons that fit with characters personalities (most of the time) as to why they should be somewhere within the given plot of the episode. With the introduction of both the table and the school, we have that taken away. The table shook a pony's vut to tell them it was time, and the principal will do the same at the school. Both allow a little bit of freedom in terms of how things are done when the ponies asked to be part of the story, but they're still forced into the story and it makes it feel a little less realistic and natural. On top of that, there are quiet of few of the main 6 who should be unable to spare much time for something like this.

AJ: Has her farm to run and was shown in episodes like Applebuck Season that a lot of the time it takes a lot of her time.

Dash: Works for the weatherponies and also does Wonderbolt stuff on the side. Top Bolt showed us that she was buisy all the time and had little downtime to herself. That doesn't even include personal practice on the side.

Rarity: Multiple buisnesses and many clients who look to her to constantly create. There have been many times where we've been shown that she is forced to do things like all-nighters to finish requests, meaning little free time.

The other three do have their own personal lives, but they can integrate their interests pretty easily within the school (unless the Cakes rwally need Pinkie's help) and I could see them working alright in the setting.

Is the school a leap in logic?

As of right now, I don't think anyone can definitively answer that question as the first two episodes in the season that may answer that question have yet to air, so it's really all just a lot of speculation and theories until we can see those episodes.

I would though, have to agree with some of the points made in the above posts, as having delegates come to the school to learn about friendship and then bringing those skills and lessons back to their own lands seems like a reasonable theory as to the creation of the school.
