Lauren Faust’s DC Super Hero Girls

Thought I’d make a thread on this since the crew has at least a couple people (I don’t actually know much about who’s involved) from the earlier seasons of MLP. A DC Super Hero Girls series is coming to Cartoon Network. Lauren Faust is an executive producer and M.A. Larson is the head writer. It premieres with a one hour movie called DC Super Hero Girls: Sweet Justice on March 8 at 6 P.M. After that, regular episodes will air Sundays at 4 P.M. starting March 17.

MLPFIM may be ending, but its creator has a new project out that hopefully will help feed the community's fix. The MLP influence is very evident in the character designs and personalities.

There are a bunch more shorts up on its YouTube channel if you want to get more of a feel for its tone.

So a lot of mixed thoughts here from me.

For starters, we'll get this out of the way: I don't agree with how Faust decided to go about advertising this at the news of MLP ending. Comes off as really bad taste and it might sour others taste for it out of the gate. I'm more of one to give my complete unfiltered opinion, so let's just get the good, the bad and the ugly out of the way. This was my first real exposure to the show was her doing that, so that's NOT a good way to start and if others are in the same boat... That could sabotage it a little.

With that out of the way.

This is a mixed bag. There's a lot of good here but some stuff that is "ehhh", not inherently bad but... Ehhhhhh.

The good:

  • The characters are super cute. Their designs, absolutely adorable. Babs is done really adorable and Tara Strong gives her an appropriate voice.
  • Artwise, it's top notch. Faust really excels at designing characters that are nice to look at, it's probably her strongest point.
  • The premise seems like it's meant to blend slice of life with superhero antic which is probably going to work out well because it gives you kind of like what Teen Titans did and that turned out great and was also DC.
  • Really colorful and vibrant.
  • Doesn't seem like it's meant to be "dumbed down" superheroes "for the kiddies". It looks like it's clearly intended to be a fun-for-all-ages kind of thing.

The Eh:

  • It's more superhero shows. With the recent trend of superhero stuff, I do worry about a show pushing an all-female cast in today's market because we've seen that DC and Marvel will basically blame any failures on "sexism" and not quality, so that is something to worry about.
  • It's a DC show of all things and DC is not doing so hot right now due to a lot of really bad movies and show decisions, including Teen Titans Go, which is on the same network, so letting Teen Titans Go influence this... Is very possible.
  • While Tara Strong is a nice voice and I feel she fits... I'm getting a little tired of Tara Strong. Comes off as a really "safe" choice, gotta have her so we can ensure there is "some" interest out of the gate. Also kind of weird that Tara goes from voicing Batman's worst enemy's girlfriend to being... His biggest fangirl. IDK, I kind of feel Tara Strong's inclusion is for:
  • Feels a lot like it's trying hard to capture the MLP crowd. IDK how I feel about that. Generally shows trying to capture audiences of other shows through emulation can be shaky. Something to be wary of.
  • All female casts in comics these days has become a lot of "shoe horn girl power messages" which doesn't really sell well. Given that Lauren is a feminist, I do fear that may become an issue too.

Like none of these criticisms are inherently "bad", but they are "better watch out" points.

I'll give the show an honest watch when it premieres.

Noticing some irony here:

Lauren Faust apparently was against Equestria Girls and one of the emails from the leaks confirmed she was against the idea. Yet... her show bears a lot of similarities to it:

  • Six main characters.
  • All female.
  • All teenagers, so mixing teenager lifestyle comedy and antics with magic antics (superpower antics in this case)
  • Six girls with "different" personalities learning to get along and come together, including many "similar" personalities to EQG such as a shy girl, a "cool" girl, and a nerdy girl.
  • All relatively "skinny" body types as well, so no real representation of different body types (which I know Faust herself never said anything about, but I know some of the criticizers of EQG did)
  • Tara Strong even voices the lead character again.
  • High school setting.

Like... This shows just seems like it's Equestria Girls but with a superhero flavor. Which is fine and all... But kind of hypocritical that she was so against EQG (enough to quit the show apparently if all the emails and leaks are to be believed) yet she makes a show that is... Very very very very similar...

I admit Teen Titans Go Worst Show Ever...

They should have done what they did for Young Justice. Come back where the last series left off. Now that would be Epic..

Teen Titans series was Perfect, Teen Titans Go Series Train Wreak.

Are you Kidding me this Series is EPIC... I LOVE IT... Eeeeeeeekkkkk.

I love the DC Batman Franchise. Can't wait for Gotham season 5.

This Show really kicks So Pony Tail Butt. Love it.

You do understand Hasbro does not Own Copyright to ideas Right ;)

Not to worry Friend, everyone has different taste even in Franchises and Series.

Its not officially the End of the world or Doomsday.

Literally, it was a knock-off of Monster High which came before EQG a good 3 years. It was made to blatantly compete with Monster High. Not to mention the idea had been done many times before that, so it was hardly her idea.

I like Zantana and Batgirl in this. I find Supergirl amusing, as she makes me think of Power Girl (an alternate universe version of Supergirl). I only vaguely remember Bumblebee from an old Teen Titans comic, so I have no real connection to the character. I'm a bit puzzled as to Wonder Woman in this, rather than using a variant of Donna Troy/Wonder Girl? But okay.

All-in-all, it seems fun.

Monster High did start the Trend, EQG took a piece of that pie, however now Super hero girls are the next in line to get on the band wagon. I see no problem here. Inspiration is everywhere, and no one can copyright inspiration ;)

Personally its Cool. And a Interesting concept, and from the little seen so far great. I like it. Very original and stands out.

Yet there is more than just the art and personalities that matter, the point is the Story. And how well its written. If done right people will follow, however done poorly and a sloppy mess it can really do some serious harm, and cause viewers to loose interest, resulting in the series to end quick,

Monster high was female dominated however the males had Quite a mix of roles. So it was really good. The EQG Was more of a Human/pony show mix however heavily dominated by the females. Males had very small roles. This one is new depending on the stories and the flow of the series, time will tell weather this takes off to be a success, or sadly crash and burn. So far it looks highly female dominated. Granted the focus in on 6 Super girls.

Lauren Faust is a Highly Skilled professional, and has a fine gift and talent into storytelling. Why stick around with a company who will dictate your every move and limit your creative mind.

When there are other companies out there who are hungry for genuine talent, Willing to welcome you on board and give you more freedom to unleash your mind of creative genius.

The fact you call out Lauren Faust is narrow minded of you. You can go on Forever about the past. She had a beautiful Vision of MLP FIM, however she was chained to limitations by Hasbro.

Personally she did the Smart move and walked away from Hasbro and Moved on with her life taking her talent and Gift with her.

Instead sulking in the past, perhaps it is you who needs to get on with your life. And leave this Talented Creative Artist continue  on to bless this world with her creative Artistic Genius ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

I just watched the premiere. OMG! It was wonderful! I was on the edge of my seat. This may be heresy to some, but I think I like it BETTER than MLP:FIM!

Wonder Woman is hilarious!

"Twilight Sparkle" is Barbra Gordon/Batgirl, two of my favorite characters combined into one! Plus, she has her Batgirl 66 suit! :pinkie:
