Being someone that is very critical of Nintendo, they impressed me this time and I'm quite happy about it. Tons of announcements, especially in the RPG department, new Mario Strikers (I am very skeptical after Super Rush though), the Mario Kart 8 DLC is dope and for me personally, Nintendo Switch Sports was awesome. Really looking forward to that one.

One thing I will say and it of course has nothing to do with Nintendo themselves, but that Disney racing game is gonna be straight trash. Free to play for no reason other than "Well Fortnite is free to play and we at Disney are in bed with Fortnite". It immediately screams possible exploitation to me. I expect no less from Disney anymore. All corporate, all the time.

One slight beef I have with the direct? Still no new Wario stuff. As in Wario Land or World. I think we are long overdue for something like that. Of course that likely wouldn't make it this year anyways so it wouldn't be in this Direct but I am all up for surprises. :P

Mario Kart 8 getting a bunch of new tracks is nice. I'm not happy that they decided to skimp out on a Switch Mario Kart, but Mario Kart 8 *is* really good, so it getting new life will surely be fun. Also, nice to see some Mario Kart Tour tracks because I sure as heck ain't playing Tour. lol

Nothing else all of that exciting for me announced. The Kirby 3D game looks fantastic, but I honestly was pretty much sold on it when it was first revealed, so the information revealed here was just adding onto that. lol

I liked some of the new announcements but overall the Direct was pretty boring. Most of what Nintendo announced from their own stable of franchises were incredibly easy to figure out. They're not very good at being subtle. I even had to skip through some parts because it made me cringe at what they were doing. I will admit that the new Mario Strikers shows some incredible promise provided they don't mess it up somewhere along the way.

The direct isn't that bad for me. I'm looking forward in getting kirby and the forgotten land(s) even though there were returning abilities that i knew about.

i'm glad chrono cross is gonna be on switch compared to the PS1 version, you need 2 disks for that game, but this one, you don't.

Mario Kart 8 DX DLC, i got interested in it, but i may be hoping to grab the DLC the next time when my nephews play.

Portal and Kirby were the two things that interested me most, as well as the free updates for Metroid Dread.

Still want Prime 4.

My friend was POPPING OFF about the Live a Live remake

He is a fan of Octopath and wanted to play Live a Live when he saw it on Whoisthisgit's channel

That was another good one. Really loving the trend of 2D HD remakes and original games lately. I really hope for them to do it with FFT, VI or Chrono Trigger

Same, but my friend got annoyed seeing a few people go like "What no mother 3" "Why not Chrono Trigger ;(" in response to the Live a Live thing on twitter

The more I've thought about Nintendo's offerings in the Direct, the more weary I feel about it.

This would explain why the Mario Kart courses are so cheap, which should have been a red flag right away. Now, it still is a lot of content and it still will likely be decent, but make no mistake that this is a cash grab in the end.

Switch Sports having only half the sports of Resort at launch (Resort is 13 years old) is a bummer too. I am frankly so done with this release strategy of "Let's launch an incomplete product intentionally so we can fill the rest in later!" This same problem is why I am immediately questionable about Mario Strikers. Tons of people lost their stuff when that appeared and I get it, but they all seem to forget that this is (I assume) Camelot making it and the they have had a really rough track record lately. Mario Tennis Aces was fun but launched with little content. Mario Golf Super Rush was a massive downgrade for the series with dumbed down gameplay, lack of polish and again, barely any content. All so they can go full "live service" and give us the complete product down the line. It doesn't sit well with me.

Theres still a lot of great things on the Direct absolutely, but as for Nintendo themselves? They are lacking, hard.

@Kyoshi That's a shame about the Mario Kart tracks. But at the same time, Mario Kart 8 is just so darn good and I think even if they're a little visually lacking it will be okay. Plus, I haven't even played the bulk of Tour tracks because that game is awful to control (and also awful in every other way, as are any other gacha games). So I'm going to stay positive. That's a whole lot of tracks to add onto the ones we already have. =)

Friend of mine is saying that Coconut Mall isnt in Tour, and some other comments from his friends

"I have a good feeling that a bunch will be carried from tour, but there will be just as many that are remakes."

"It could also be not final footage as well, and do touch ups upon release." follow by someone else who said "They most likely will, akin to how they first shown Mario Odyssey"

  • The title was changed to Thoughts on the Nintendo Direct (On February 9, 2022)?
  • 3 weeks later...

I thought it was pretty great!

Especially since it just so happened to fall on my birthday. Methinks the Nintendo ninjas snuck into my house and found out that it was gonna be my birthday soon and eavesdropped... :mlp_huh:

All joking aside, I loved it! I'm hyped for the Mario Kart 8 DX tracks and Splatoon 3 mainly! :squee:
