I would have to go with the chicken, it somehow evolved from another creature and when that happened it gained the ability to reproduce leading it hatch an egg. So in the end the chicken came before the egg. Yes this is a basic analysis, but to me evolution is the key.

I was always taught that the Chicken was first, because when God created animals he created then as they were, not having them go through puberty.

Evolution doesn't work like that. Only very, very small changes happen at once. The changes required to go from live birth to egg laying would be way too great to happen in a single generation.

As people have pointed out, this is actually a Creationism vs Evolution debate.

We can imagine the proto-chicken, the ancestor to the modern chicken. A combination of gene mutations had led one sub-species of proto-chickens to become more and more different from the rest. Eventually, one day an egg was laid; it contained the first modern chicken, as it too had genetic mutations that knocked it over the line to be considered a new species (although this line is certainly not clear cut). The egg was this first modern chicken organism, whose parents were proto-chickens (although the parents would be a hybrid, genetically similar to both regular proto-chickens and modern chickens).

Ergo, the egg came first.

Evolution for me (mostly)...egg I would say...tricky for me though...explination below

I believe spirituality and evolution are not mutually exclusive. I am a Wiccan and I believe that some force set off the universe and then it moved throughout evolution. Then altogether, to go to heaven (whatever heaven you may believe in) you follow the cosmic rules set out by your deity or god and live a good life and be nice to each other. Eventually I believe we become part of the universe. That is heaven.

just my opinion

TLDR: evolution exists but was set off by a force

I voted chicken but no one really can know as im sure all of us understand, The chicken could have come first if it was born from a mammal but was altered so it would from then on lay eggs, the same is also true for the egg because an egg could have been altered in some way to form chickens as we know them today, so in truth i think both could have happened, but you didnt give a Pony option sir and for that you will be punished by the gods of MLP!....just give them a minute....there cooking something up.

Your right, thanks for the clarification :) I wrote that post as I was about to go to bed, honestly I really don't remember writing it :( However, I really believe evolution plays a major role in the creation of the chicken. With my very limited knowledge (the last time I studied evolution was 10 years ago when I read Charles Darwin's book, so I'm not very well versed on this subject), I would argue that evolution in some form was the key. To me I cannot accept creationism because I don't believe there is a god. That is all I can say on the subject and again thanks evilshy for the response :)

The thing is, chicken is an avian creature, and that's as far away as it could from mammals. And back then we have no "alterer" that could force anything to lay eggs
