music How do you find new music to listen to?

Music Chart Fan

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking about the responses to my previous topic here:

http://mlpforums.com/topic/28652-does-anyone-else-look-up-music-popularity-charts/

I stated in this topic that I mostly discover new music by looking up songs that performed well on the singles charts and by listening to the radio (classic rock, oldies, and modern adult). Judging from the responses, I am relatively unique in discovering new music this way.

How do you find new music to listen to? (By new music, I mean music which you have not heard before, not necessarily music newly released.) Music popularity charts? Radio? Music forums? Friends' recommendations? YouTube? Someway else I am not thinking of?

It's usually through Internet sites, other forum recommendations or YouTube reviews. What I listen to isn't mainstream and doesn't appear in normal chartings, and I never liked the popular hits charts thing, so I find it useless. Besides, user recommended stuff is usually better IMO.

Usually, a friend reccomends them to me, but I find all my new electronic music through either IKF (not so much) and Monstercat.

I also find a lot in the Metal Thread, or any other music thread that interests me.

I also tend to find stuff through YouTube related videos.

Make a last.fm account then when you listen to a band it'll recommend like 10 other bands with similar sound. Great way to find music you might never have otherwise discovered.

I don't listen to music too much, so, funnily enough, often by watching PMV's (which I find on EqD).

I found out I like AWOLnation, for example, by seeing a couple of PMV's with their music in them.

Otherwise I just borrow a CD from the library with different bands' or, usually, composers' music on it.

I just realized I use interjections, like this one, in my sentences quite a lot.

going through random albums in record stores or by going on the internet and downloading random shit from places. also listening to recs from others. works pretty well considering that i'm sure i must have over 100 physical albums now and 751GB's worth of music on my external harddrive (yes, 751 GB. no more, no less).

I get most of my music recommendations from the Metal Thread, here at this forum.

Besides that, another source are some guitar players I know. They are usually into some pretty obscure bands, and these bands are usually pretty good.

METAL THREAD.

Going to shows and seeing the small opening bands, my co-contributors at the Metal Thread, and my various RL friends.

Oh, and Youtube related videos.

Through other bands and Youtube mostly. I also listen to what others recommend, a lot of the time you can find some really great music thanks to others.

Heh heh, I don't know about your experience, but the public places where I go usually play classic pop and rock music or adult music, and since I have spent a lot of time looking up artists of that nature, I usually end up already recognizing a lot of it. This has led me to many new songs before, though.

The funny thing is, when I hear new songs over the loudspeakers at these public places, I often end up being able to think of the artist and title of the song despite never hearing it before. Since I have spent many hours making chart databases, I have hundreds of artist-title associations in my head (e.g. Julian Lennon had a hit called "Too Late For Goodbyes"), without having any idea what the songs or artists sound like. Then, when I recognize a song I hear in this way, I can look up that artist's chart history and find out what other hits that artist had and listen to those.

However, if my memory fails me, or the artist or title is not obvious, then I have to remember some of the lyrics and look them up online later to find out what the song is.

I use a music program call Spotify and it has similar bands to the current one being listened to listed. I usually check out some new music from those, as well as being recommended by friends. I personally don't look at popularity charts or anything because most of the music I listen to isn't usually listed very high on those charts :P
