technology Support the construction of a space elevator!

Cutting the cable would free the station and allow it to travel in a straight line rather than continue to orbit the earth.

Erm, what... that's not how geostationary orbit works, is it?

Also Ratchet. You should, like, apply to be an author/editor at Cracked or something. If only I were the owner...

Well, the only thing keeping things in orbit is some sort of tether. In the case of the ISS, that tether is gravity. In the case of a elevator, it is physically tethered.

Orbit is an acceleration, which implies a constant change in velocity (in this case around the earth). Velocity is defined as speed in a given direction, so when we talk about orbit as an acceleration, it is because of a change in direction and not speed. So it has a specific direction at any given moment, and is only changing direction because of the outside force that is the cable tehering it to the earth. Cutting this cable would end application of outside force and the station would start to drift in a straight line.

Of course, this is what retro rockets are for; no one really wants to drift off into space

This is all false, gravity still exists. My previous assertion that it would just float there stands. But yes, that is what retros are for.

And also, just because developments were made recently, lets talk fire. If a fire were to occur on the station, what would you do?

Red Bull found a solution recently.

I said Jump! Go ahead Jump! Perhaps not everyone needs to jump however. Installation of gravitational drop pods could be used. Like Tower of Terror at Disney: Just buckle up and fall to earth.

Cracked? I am not familiar with this :o

I still don't get it... if cutting the cable would cause the station to drift away from Earth, then it's not in orbit. Much less geostationary.

That goes against the concept we've been discussing for over 7 pages.

Solution - Its already in orbit, it would just hang there with a cable dangling off of it, first off.

After thinking about it- Yes, that previous assertion that it would float there is correct. I think I just temporarily confused myself, in that the cable was a tether to replace gravity. This is false, gravity is still there, it is being counteracted with orbitital rotation to generate lift and place less tension on the cable.

Allow me to fix my previous posts so That I do not confuse anyone :P

But say the planet were to suddenly explode for no reason, then yes it would shoot off in a straight line from its orbital path.

Actually guys,if the US has enough money for the black budget, then they have enough money to do this.

.

But as I said, such a thing cannot be possible yet.

This is getting amusing to watch now, actually.

Besides,I'm pretty sure the OH SO POWERFUL -sarcasm- government will fail at building this and then end it.

Then try to build it again.

And then end it.

And over and over again until they get fed up and stop.

But screw that.^

Time will tell.
