Being serious for a moment, it's very well possible that Luna was sealed away much like Discord was. Much like Discord though, if Luna was sealed away, she was still likely awake and aware of everything around her allowing her pain and emotion to build into the rage that manifested later upon her release.

 

I like to think of the banishment via the Elements of Harmony as similar to carbonite freezing. You may be stuck solid, trapped and seemingly dead, but you're still very much alive inside and able to feel, see and hear everything around you.

well the answer is so very easy my friends she played black ops playing the moon level on multiplayer made her feel like she had friends there with her and in a sense she did and that made her happy but then one by one they died or became trolls and this made her raging quit not just any rage quit one that last a thousand years when the elements hit her she remembered the reason she played games for fun. From what I have seen in the comics, she may have chatted and/or partied with her shadowy demon shadow friend things. They seem like an interesting group of whatchamacallits. They could easily hold a 1,000 years long conversation I bet, despite her royal Canterlot voice. I would hang out with Luna/Nightmare Moon for a millennia. She/They could teach me to be assertive.

 

Besides that, I vote for the 'sealed away' option in terms of canon. 'Mare in the moon' sounds like sealed away in the moon to me.

But the more serious answer is that I agree with Full Spectrum. She was sealed IN the moon, thus forming the crater patterns on its surface which even resembled a unicorn's silhouette. Said patterns then disappeared when she went free. It's likely time elapsed quickly if not instantly for her. Had that not been the case, she'd prolly have been aware of what happened in the world but throughout the Nightmare Moon arc, she didn't seem to show such awareness.

I personally don't know how Luna could survive without food for 1000 years, unless she were a god too (which might actually be the case). She'll probably be concocting infinite ways to defeat Celestia and have the night forever. Or she could also be thinking about what a terrible decision she made to rebel against Celestia. Could she be like Gollum... I know I would be.

I think we already know what she was doing, guys. It wasn't enough that Celestia exiled her: she had to make her watch bad movies!

 

 

This has been my wallpaper since November, BTW. I don't think I'll ever change it. 

My serious answer is that she was sealed away and passed the time with long periods of sleep and plotting how she would get her revenge when the position of the nearby stars somehow shifted and allowed her to escape.

I think the whole time she planned to be Nightmare Moon. She clearly didn't think the whole thing through since she was easily defeated by the Elements of Harmony. If I were up there, I'd just be taking a thousand-year nap. Or be bored.
