Dashabel 381 April 2, 2013 Share April 2, 2013 (edited) Well this is half relevant but I've had a lot of petty trouble recently just because I'm English and spell a lot of words with an 's' instead of a 'z', such as apologised, surprised and realised. -.- some Bronies on fimfiction beat the hell out of my story because these words were spelt 'wrongly'. I suggest they sort out their statistics before they criticise(there's another word) my writing. Up From The Ashes 56 April 2, 2013 Share April 2, 2013 (edited) The Americanization spelling of the words with "o" instead of "ou". Colour for example, should be spelled as such. Not to mention "er" instead of "re" like Fibre. This one is also really annoying, the letter Z (pronounced Zed) being pronounced like Zee. ErBoi 501 April 2, 2013 Share April 2, 2013 Improper use of "then" and "than" is one of my pet peeves, even though I can sort of understand it. Every time somebody writes "defiantly" where they should have put "definitely" I get really annoyed. Those words are not even close to similar. Yes. This. Every time I see that, I'm just like, "How can you possibly think that that is how it's spelled?"
Coffee Cream 74 April 2, 2013 Share April 2, 2013 It drives me bonkers when people say alot instead of a lot. Fortunately, I found a blog called hyperbole and a half where she shows how to cope with seeing the "word" alot: http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.ca/2010/04/alot-is-better-than-you-at-everything.html
Harmonic Revelations 8,835 April 2, 2013 Share April 2, 2013 Also, when people mix up the words and and an annoys me for some reason although it's forgivable. Warning, lots of foul language: Most of those really bug me, but people using Y, U, R, 2, B4, and other such things instead of the actual words bug me the most. Even in chat, it bugs me, but other abbreviations (btw, iirc, etc.) don't. Y R U so mad, U didn't seem that easily angered 2 me B4.
Clover Heart 978 April 2, 2013 Share April 2, 2013 (edited) What gets me is common phrases that people get so, so wrong. Like "for all intensive purposes" or "taken for granite." Like, do you even think about what you say before it comes out of your mouth? Or before you hit "send," in this case. One thing that really bugs me is the misuse of past participles. Like, "I can't believe how much I drunk, last night." Being that "have" wasn't used here, you need to say "drank." Not to mention, this context doesn't call for the present perfect tense to begin with, so you couldn't even really sneak a "have" in there, or say "Oh, I... ran it together... in there... somewhere..." Or when people try to make up their own word for a past participle. Like "broughten." "Broughten" is not a word. The past participle for bring is brought, just like the past tense. I think misuse of past participles makes people sound really stupid. Oh, also, when people say "literally" when they don't actually mean "literally." Like, "I, literally, live in a shoe box." Oh, really? Like, the box you bought your Nikes in? You crawl up in that tiny thing and go to sleep every night? Oh, what? You just have a small apartment? Yeah, that's what I thought. Shut up. Jokuc 8,173 April 2, 2013 Share April 2, 2013 I don't have any problems with people misspelling words or when they have wrong grammar. Sometimes I correct them just because I'm mean c: but unless the sentence is unreadable I don't really care much. You know. It can be quite funny sometimes. ErBoi 501 April 2, 2013 Share April 2, 2013 This just reminded me of something. My first girlfriend was not a good speller and I helped her with which "bye" to use when she was leaving a note for her parents once. Later, her mom insisted that she used the wrong one (saying that "bye" as a farewell should be spelled "buy") and I got stuck in a very awkward position trying to tell my girlfriend's parent that she was wrong. Loona 287 April 2, 2013 Share April 2, 2013 When I'm not writing, I usually write in all lowercase, no 's, and don't bother with spelling that much. (I even just had to correct my "don't"). But in writing, people always mix up things like threw and through. It ticks me off ):
Dimitri Hammer 3,645 April 2, 2013 Share April 2, 2013 In my four years of English speaking I have committed numerous (and by that I mean millions of) grammar and word mistakes. In writing I'm usually a little better than when I speak. When I don't think about it I do mess up constantly. Difference about me though is that English isn't my first language, and it is in my opinion extremely difficult to learn and speak. I can't pronounce it, nor can I remember translations very often. Is something I constantly mess up. So, just wanted to state this before a angry mob comes after me. I bid thee до свидания. Acoustic Cloud 2,202 April 2, 2013 Share April 2, 2013 (I am tempted to write grammar errors within my response) Some of my biggest annoyances are people leaving out apostrophes, "can I?" Instead of "may I?", whom never being used, the classic "Joe and I, Joe and me." (It seems nobody knows when to use me over I) and anything I left out is posted above. Metaright 76 April 3, 2013 Share April 3, 2013 These are by no means the only two things, but they get to me a whole lot. First, when commas are placed like this (with an actual YouTube comment as an example): I hate it when people call Slender Man Slender. That's like calling Superman, Super. SuperMan, Super A comma does not go there. Just because you would pause if you said the sentence out loud does not mean that you insert a comma. Two, I am very, very tired of seeing people put things like this on Facebook: Sherlock season 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You only need one exclamation point. You only need one, dang it. That's what the exclamation point is for- to signal an exclamation. More than one exclamation mark is redundant, not increasing the exclamation. The only thing that increases when you add more exclamation marks is how much my opinion of you falls. On a general note, I see my high school teachers make idiotic grammar and spelling mistakes all the time. Mistakes that I knew to avoid when I was literally ten years old. I dont mind grammar mistakes solely because the english language is simply a means of expression and as long as the point gets across I consider it a success. Twiliscael 3,960 April 3, 2013 Share April 3, 2013 Abuse of the commas, because it seems to make alot, of sense (even if I can be guilty of this one sometimes). Your and you're. It's pretty obvious which one SHOULD be right, I think. There, their, and they're. Same as above, it's pretty obvious which one SHOULD be being used right now. When people forget to or unnecessarily add an "ly" to their words. And I and me. It really, really bugs me >_< I tend to take the high road, get stoned, and fly low . . .
