Scheduled Downtime Notice - November 18 @ 1:00 AM PST

Twilight Sparkle ✨

Recommended Posts

MLP Forums will undergo scheduled maintenance tonight at 1:00 AM Pacific Time (GMT-8). That's 4:00 AM EST and 9:00 AM UTC.

The maintenance entails migrating the site to a new server, which is running a much newer operating system than our current one. With this upgrade, we will also be moving to the latest major release of PHP, so you may see improvements in the site's performance (I know MLP Forums is already the fastest pony forum on the planet, but the only thing a little extra speed could hurt is Rainbow Dash's ego :D).

The move is expected to take one hour, during which the site will be unavailable. Our Minecraft and Team Fortress 2 servers, as well as the newly launched Equestria.tv, will be unaffected, and thus available, during this time. If you would like to continue interacting with the MLP Forums community during the move, you are encouraged to visit these channels. :)

If any issues arise that prolong the maintenance period, status updates will be posted on our Twitter account.

D: That's 8pm for me. :( Oh well, I guess that means I should probably schedule a movie in that time or something. Anyway, thanks for the heads up, Boss Man!

This one is a tad less creepy. Wouldn't you agree?

Is it normal for a site to move servers this often?

Seriously, we've been online for a little over a year, and we've changed servers how many times?

Perhaps not, but if it means getting better service, then I'm all for it, personally. It wouldn't be done (being costly in time and money and things) if it didn't benefit us.

Oh, I have no problem with it. I just think it's kinda funny.

This site gets around like a $5 whore. It just doesn't have any viruses ;)

We really do get around, yeah. Fortunately, this time it's not a capacity problem. Some of the projects that we're working on (Equestria.tv being one of them) simply do not work on our current operating system because it's too old, and it is financially unfeasible to sustain two high-end dedicated servers for any significant period of time.

Alright then ,but i wont be online th rest of the day so i guess the next time i see MLP forums it'll be changed slightly Anything in particular your adding?

Nothing is being added to the site. I'm just moving it to a newer, faster, and better server.

You struck a memory for me with that sentence. Sure enough, I found exactly what I was looking for on Youtube! Check these videos out!

We're now online on the new server!

No errors occurred during the transfer, but the link speed between the servers was lower than expected, and slowed down to a ridiculously low speed for the better part of an hour at one point, which significantly prolonged the length of the process from the original 1-hour estimate.

But really, as I said on Twitter, there was a damn lot of data to bring over, too. MLP Forums is absolutely massive in filesize for a forum. :o

Well, good to see the forums getting a new and better system! Hopefully this will improve a lot of things.

Well, most of us will probably be asleep when this is happening, so it really won't affect some people. So....I'm one of those lucky ones. :P

Well, looking forward to see the much faster forum! Sure this will be a great thing to add. However, I'm sure everyone's gonna miss MLP forums while it's gone for an hour......stay strong, everyone!!

The server migration was completed a few hours ago, Pixiesong. We've already been up and running on the new server for a while. :P

I was a bit disappointed at how long it ended up taking, but I can't say I'm surprised. Moving such a huge amount of data always takes longer than expected.

What are the specs of the new server?

I sleep right through it, actually, come to think of it, I only fell asleep about an hour before the scheduled downtime happened. What a coincidence, considering I hadn't seen this thread yet at that point in time.

The sad thing is, I'll probably be awake then. It'll be down at 4:00 AM for me.

Whatever. I want the forums to be as good as possible. And that's all the more reason to go to sleep.

The site won't lose any data during the move, will it?

Come on y'all, read the thread before you post. :P I was unaware of this move (I really should get around this place more often, what with the small amount of free time I have doing...nothing important, really) and was a bit disappointed after I got off my graveyard shift at work and the forums were down. Still, all for the best, and it didn't upset me that much. :D

What are the specs of the new server?

Same as the last one, but running CentOS 6 instead of 5. So, we've got:

  • CentOS 6.3
  • Intel Xeon E3-1230 @ 3.20 GHz
  • 2 SSD's in RAID1
  • 2 HDD's (7200 RPM) in RAID1
  • 1 Gbps connection

The sad thing is, I'll probably be awake then. It'll be down at 4:00 AM for me.

You should read the thread and look at the OP's timestamp. ;) The migration was completed over 14 hours ago.

Everything has been copied over perfectly - as a matter of fact, the reason the site was taken offline during the move was to ensure the process would not create a data integrity problem.

Yeah. I noticed that after abstract mentioned it. Man, I feel stupid. Usually I'm good about checking the time a thread's created.
